Field Circuit Coupling Optimization Design of the Main Electromagnetic Parameters of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor

  • The electromagnetic parameters of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) such as the open load permanent magnet flux, d axis reactance $X_d$, and q axis reactance $X_q$, are most essential to the performance analysis and optimization design of the motor. Based on the numerical analysis of the 3D electromagnetic field, the three electromagnetic parameters of permanent magnet synchronous motors with U form interior rotor structures are calculated by FEA. The rules of the leakage coefficient and reactance parameters changing with the air gap length, permanent magnet magnetism length, and isolation magnetic bridge dimensions in the rotor are given. The calculated values agree well with the measured values. The FEA results are integrated with the self compiled electromagnetic design program to optimize the prototype motor. The tested performances of the prototype motor prove that the method is suitable for the optimization of motor structure.

A Speed Sensorless Control for Interior Permanent magnet Motors based on the Fuzzy controller in the Field-Weakening Region (퍼지제어기를 이용한 약게자영역에서의 매입형 영구자석 동기전동기의 속도 센서리스 제어)

  • For the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) drive to operate above the base speed in the constant horsepower region, the field weakening control is applied. However, the field weakening control was not almost applied to sensorless control of the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor. In this paper, the field weakening control is applied to the sensorless control of IPMSM based on the fuzzy controller. The effectiveness of the proposed system is verified by the experimental results.

Minimization of Losses in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors Using Neural Network

  • In this paper, maximum efficiency operation of two types of permanent magnet synchronous motor drives, namely; surface type permanent magnet synchronous machine (SPMSM) and interior type permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM), are investigated. The efficiency of both drives is maximized by minimizing copper and iron losses. Loss minimization is implemented using flux weakening. A neural network controller (NNC) is designed for each drive, to achieve loss minimization at difffrent speeds and load torque values. Data for training the NNC are obtained through off-line simulations of SPMSM and IPMSM at difffrent operating conditions. Accuracy and fast response of each NNC is proved by applying sudden changes in speed and load and tracking the UC output. The drives'efHciency obtained by flux weakening is compared with the efficiency obtained when setting the d-axis current component to zero, while varying the angle of advance "$\vartheta$" of the PWM inverter supplying the PMSM drive. Equal efficiencies are obtained at diffErent values of $\vartheta$, derived to be function of speed and load torque. A NN is also designed, and trained to vary $\vartheta$ following the derived control law. The accuracy and fast response of the NN controller is also proved.so proved.

An Asymmetric Rotor Design of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor for Improving Torque Performance

  • Torque ripple is necessarily generated in interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) due to the non-sinusoidal distribution of flux density in the air gap and the magnetic reluctance by stator slots. This paper deals with an asymmetric rotor shape to reduce torque ripple which can make sinusoidal flux density distribution in the air gap. Meanwhile the average torque is relatively increased by the asymmetric rotor. Response surface method (RSM) is applied to find the optimum position of the permanent magnets for the IMPSM with improved torque performance. Consequently, an asymmetric structure is the result of RSM and the structure has disadvantage of a mechanical stiffness. Finally, the performance of suggested shape is verified by finite element analysis and structural analysis is conducted for the mechanical stiffness.

Evaluation of Back-EMF Estimators for Sensorless Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors

  • This paper presents a comparative study of position sensorless control schemes based on back-electromotive force (back-EMF) estimation in permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM). The characteristics of the estimated back-EMF signals are analyzed using various mathematical models of a PMSM. The transfer functions of the estimators, based on the extended EMF model in the rotor reference frame, are derived to show their similarity. They are then used for the analysis of the effects of both the motor parameter variations and the voltage errors due to inverter nonlinearity on the accuracy of the back-EMF estimation. The differences between a phase-locked-loop (PLL) type estimator and a Luenberger observer type estimator, generally used for extracting rotor speed and position information from estimated back-EMF signals, are also examined. An experimental study with a 250-W interior-permanent-magnet machine has been performed to validate the analyses.

  • On account of small size and light weight, a high-speed machine is regarded as a key technology for many future applications of drive systems. In high-speed applications, permanent magnet synchronous motors have a number of merits such as high efficiency and high power density. Therefore, they are suitable for driving the air-blower of a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) where space and energy savings are critical. Particularly, a surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) of them is mainly used as a high-speed machine. However, the motor has a fatal flaw due to a retaining can to maintain the mechanical integrity of a rotor assembly. The can results in the increase of magnetic air-gap length in the SPMSM. Thus, in this paper, an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is applied in order to drive the air-blower of FCEV instead of the SPMSM, and the experimental results of two models are compared to verify the capability of the IPMSM for high-speed applications.

  • There are two kinds of the synchronous motor, one is an induction type motor started without a driving system, the other is the one started with an external driving system. but, both are complicated. Nowadays, in order to devoid for the synchronous motor being complicated in design, line start permanent magnet(LSPM) motors are being developed. The LSPM motor is composed of the rotor that has interior permanent magnet and aluminum bar instead of general rotor. In this paper, we analyzed the characteristics of the LSPM motor which has both characteristics of an induction motor and a synchronous motor, and we compared the the LSPM motor characteristics with the induction motor.

Design Analysis and Economic Analysis of high Efficiency 100kW Generator for Hydro Power System (소수력 발전용 고효율 100kW 발전기의 설계해석 및 경제성 분석)

  • This paper shows the design of the 100 kW IPMSG for small hydraulic power generator. The high-efficient generator, method of the dual layer interior permanent magnet was studied to improve the method of the single layer interior permanent magnet, which is mostly used. Analysis of magnet arrangement and cogging torque was done by FEM. According to structure analysis of dual layer interior permanent magnet, the amount of usage of the permanent magnet was reduced and cogging torque was decreased as well. With these successful results, the high-efficient generator design was accomplished. Based on the results of the structure analysis, the test product was designed and manufactured. And the design values and performance outputs were compared and verified with success. Also, the economic feasibility was conducted based on the electric power generated from the test product installed at the site. By the B/C analysis, in case that only SMP was analyzed, B/C ratio was 1.24 at the discount ratio of 5.5%, which considered to be economically feasible. The study is expected to be used for the application of developing large scale high-efficient interior permanent magnet synchronous generator.

  • In this paper, inter-turn fault diagnosis of the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is performed in offline state by linking the finite element analysis (FEA) tool and control simulation tool. In order to diagnose the inter-turn fault, it is important to select the current value to determine the fault. First, the basic principles for inter-turn fault diagnosis of IPMSM are explained and co-analysis model for fault diagnosis is constructed. Further, in order to select the appropriate high frequency voltage, the change of the current value to be judged as failure was analyzed at various voltage and frequency conditions, and the change of the current value according to the number of the failed windings was analyzed. Finally, the current value to be judged as failure is selected.

  • In this paper, a design method of speed and position estimator based on unscented Kalman filter is proposed for the no sensor control of IPMSM(Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor). The proposed method is simple more than the estimator designed with rotation axis for current measurement. Also the proposed state estimator is designed including nonlinear terms of the estimator. The controller which constructed using nonlinear back-stepping control method is operated speed and current control using the estimated speed and currents information. Through simulation, the performance of the designed estimator is compared to the estimator which is designed to synchronize d-q axis.
