  • We have studied the interfacial diffusion phenomena and the role of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ buffer layer as a diffusion barrier in the $Ba-ferrite/SiO_2$ magnetic thin films for high-density recording media. In the interface of amorphous Ba-ferrite ($1900-{\AA}-thick)/SiO_2$ thin film during annealing, the interfacial diffusion started to occur at ${\sim}700^{\circ}C$. As the annealing temperature increased up to $800^{\circ}C$, the interfacial diffusion abruptly proceeded resulting in the high interface roughness and the deterioration of the magnetic properties. In order to control the interfacial diffusion at the high temperature, we introduced ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ buffer layer ($110-{\AA}-thick$) in the interface of $Ba-ferrite/SiO_2$ thin film. During the annealing of $Ba-ferrite/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3/SiO_2$ thin film even at ${\sim}800^{\circ}C$, the interface was very smooth. The smooth interface of the film was also clearly shown by the cross-sectional FESEM. The magnetic properties, such as saturation magnetization 3nd intrinsic coercivity, were also enhanced, due to the inhibition of interfacial diffusion by the ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ buffer layer. Our study suggests that the ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ buffer layer act as a useful interfacial diffusion barrier in the $Ba-ferrite/SiO_2$ thin films.

  • A three-point bending test was performed on roll-bonded Mg/Al/STS clad-metal plates under two different testing conditions (Mg layer in tension, or STS in tension) and their mechanical response and fracture behavior were investigated. Bending strength was found to be greater under the condition of Mg layer in tension. Heat treatment at $200^{\circ}C$ increased the bending formability, suggesting the interfacial strength increased at $200^{\circ}C$. Under the condition of Mg in tension, the clad heat-treated at $300^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$ fractured in two steps, with the first step associated with the interfacial fracture between Mg and Al, and the second the fracture of the Mg layer. STS/Al layers were found to be bent without complete fracture. Under the condition of STS in tension, the clad heat-treated at $300^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$ exhibited a very small load drop at the displacement, which is similar to that of the first load drop associated with the interfacial fracture under the condition of Mg in tension. In this case, no interfacial cracks were found and the complete cut-through fracture of clad was observed at low temperature heat treatment conditions, suggesting excellent interfacial strength. When the heat treatment temperature was higher than $300^{\circ}C$, interfacial cracks were observed. The local stress condition and the position of the interface with respect to the surface were found to have a great influence on the fracture behaviors of clad metals.

  • Irradiation-induced damage of binderless nanoporous-isotropic graphite (NPIG) prepared by isostatic pressing of mesophase carbon microspheres for molten salt reactor was investigated by 3.0 MeV He+ irradiation at room temperature and high temperature of 600 ℃, and IG-110 was used as the comparation. SEM, TEM, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectrum are used to characterize the irradiation effect and the influence of temperature on graphite radiation damage. After irradiation at room temperature, the surface morphology is rougher, the increase of defect clusters makes atom flour bend, the layer spacing increases, and the catalytic graphitization phenomenon of NPIG is observed. However, the density of defects in high temperature environment decreases and other changes are not obvious. Mechanical properties also change due to changes in defects. In addition, SEM and Raman spectra of the cross section show that cracks appear in the depth range of the maximum irradiation dose, and the defect density increases with the increase of irradiation dose.

  • Space charge distributions in silane crosslinked polyethylene (SXLPE)/ crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) laminates was investigated using a pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) method. XLPE shows heterocharge while SXLPE shows homocharge. Positive charge is accumulated at the interface of SXLPE/XLPE laminate when applied electric field is more than 20 kV/mm. The charge profile at various temperatures was also acquired using temperature-controllable PEA system. Although applied electric field is only 8.6 kV/mm, positive interfacial charge starts to appear near 50$^{\circ}C$.

  • The behaviour of interfacial charge in EPDM/XLPE laminates has been investigated by measuring charge distributions using a pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) method. Homocharge develops in EPDM while heterocharge develops in XLPE. A broadly interfacial charge peak is observed at EPDM/XLPE interface. When EPDM /XLPE laminates are treated in high temperature for different times, the amount and polarity of interfacial charge are changed.

  • The interfacial phenomena between intermetallic compounds and Al matrix have been studied at $680^{\circ}C$ for various holding time under argon atmosphere. Model experiments were performed using Fe, Ni and Ti wire to observe the interfacial phenomena. The interfacial phenomena between intermetallic compounds and Al matrix were analysed by optical microscope, SEM and EDX. The results of EDX and XRD showed that the interfacial zones of intermetallic compounds/Al matrix were composed of several intermetallic layers. The reaction layer was varied with holding time and heating temperature. The investigation of interfacial zones in the specimen as a function of heat treatment time at $680^{\circ}C$ indicated that the best heat treatment condition for squeeze casting was $680^{\circ}C$ for 5min.

  • In power cable joints, the interfaces of two different dielectric materials are inevitable. In addition, the interfacial breakdown between two internal dielectric surfaces represents one of the major causes of failure for power cable joints. We chose epoxy/EPDM interface, one of the interface in cable joints, and investigate dielectric interfacial breakdown phenomenon. First, design specimen with Flux 2D. Second, find interface condition which has high dielectric strength. Third, investigate interfacial breakdown properties with variable temperature.

  • The present study dealt with the relationships among the interfacial shear strength, the thickness of interfacial reaction layer and the impact value of $Nb/MoSi_2$ laminate composites. In addition, the tensile test was conducted to evaluate the fracture strain of $Nb/MoSi_2$ laminate composites. To change the thickness of the reaction layer, $Nb/MoSi_2$ laminate composites alternating sintered MoSi2 layers and Nb foils were fabricated as the parameter of hot press temperature. It has been found that the growth of the reaction layer increases the interfacial shear strength and decreases the impact value by localizing a plastic deformation of Nb foil. There also exist appropriate shear strength and the thickness of the reaction layer, which are capable of maximizing the fracture energy of $Nb/MoSi_2$.

  • The conductive link is used as a cooling medium between a cryocooler and magnet in a cryogen-free superconducting magnet system. The low temperature superconducting (LTS) magnet has one solenoidal configuration with a metal former which has a 52 mm room temperature bore. The superconducting coil is installed in the cryostat maintaining high vacuum and cooled by a two-stage cryocooler. In order to maintain the operating temperature of magnet at the designed level, the cold head temperature of the cryocooler must be lower so that heat can be removed from the superconducting coil. Also, temperature difference is occurred between the magnet and cryocooler and its magnitude is dependent upon the contact resistance at the interfacial surface between metals in the conductive link. In the paper, the performance of the LTS magnet is investigated with respect to the conductive link between the magnet former and the cold head of the cryocooler. The effects of the contact pressure and interfacial materials on the temperature distribution along the conductive link are also presented.
