  • Diffuse interface model for numerical analysis was used to compute supercavitating flows around various cavitators. The ambient pressures of 2 atm permitted cavitation studies in a range of cavitation number, ${\sigma}=0.1$ to 1.0 on selected conical and disk-headed cavitors. The computed results were compared with relation by Reichardt. Drag coefficient obtained from pressure forces acting on the cavitator also compared well with those obtained from analytical relations.

  • This paper deals with the stress singularity induced at the interface corner between the elastic substrate and the viscoelastic thin film as the polymeric film absorbs moisture from the ambient environment. The boundary element method is employed to investigate the behavior of Interface stresses. The order of the singularity is obtained numerically for a given viscoelastic model. It is shown that the stress singularity factor is relaxed with time, while the order of the singularity increases with time for the viscoelastic model considered.

  • Phenomena of direct contact condensation (DCC) heat transfer between steam and water are characterized by the transport of heat and mass through a moving steam/water interface. Application of the phenomena of DCC heat transfer to the engineering industries provides some advantageous features in the viewpoint of enhanced heat transfer. This study proposes a simple condensation model on the steam jets discharging into subcooled water from a single horizontal pipe for the prediction of the steam jet shapes. The analysis model was derived from the mass, momentum and energy equations as well as a thermal balance equation with condensing characteristics at the steam/water interface for the axi-symmetric coordinates. The extremely large heat transfer rate at the steam/water interface was reflected in the effective thermal conductivity estimated from the previous experimental results. The analysis results were compared with the experimental ones. The analysis model predicted that the steam jet shape (i. e. radius and length) was increasing as the steam mass flux and the pool temperature were increasing, which was similar in trend to that observed in the experiment.

  • The purpose of this study is to apply WDA (Work Domain Analysis) for the development of EID (Ecological Interface Design) of vehicle control display. At first, a work domain model on the automobile operation was developed using the AH (Abstraction Hierarchy) which is one of WDA tools. Secondly, information requirements that should be included in vehicle control displays were extracted on the basis of the completed model. The vehicle control information that typical automobiles interface displays currently provide occurred on the low level of the work domain model. This implies that current control displays impose too heavy cognitive workload on automobile drivers. Information requirements that can be included new vehicle control display are also discovered in the high level of the work domain model. The detailed information for EID was not proposed in this study. In the further study, the development of vehicle control display will be deeply conducted, using the results of this study.
