  • This paper describes a 'gyro-mouse', which provides a new human-computer interface (HCI) for persons who are disabled in their upper extremities, for handling the mouse-click and mouse-move function. We adopted the artificial neural network to recognize a quick-nodding pattern of the disabled person as the gyro-mouse click. The performance of our gyro-mouse was evaluated by three indices that include 'click recognition rate', 'error in cursor position control', and 'click rate per minute' on a target box appearing at random positions. Although it turned out that the average error in cursor positioning control was 1.4-1.5 times larger than that of optical mouse control, and the average click rate per minute was 40% of the optical mouse, the overall click recognition rate was 93%. Moreover, the click rate per minute increased from 35.2% to 44% with repetitive trials. Hence, our suggested gyro-mouse system can be used to provide a new user interface tool especially for those persons who do not have full use of their upper extremities.

  • Blades of horizontal axis are nowadays made of composite materials. Generally, composite materials satisfy design provides lower weight and good stiffness, while laminate composites have often damages as like the delamination and cracks at the interface of laminates. The box spar and tail parts of a blade are composed of the CFRP/GFRP hybrid laminate composites. However, delamination and the interfacial crack often occur in the interface of CFRP/GFRP hybrid laminate composites under the mixed mode fracture condition, especially mode I and mode II. Therefore, there is a need for the evaluation of the mixed mode fracture behavior during the delamination of CFRP/GFRP hybrid laminates. This study shows the experimental results for the delamination fracture toughness in CFRP/GFRP hybrid laminate composites. Fracture toughness experiments and estimation are performed by using DMMB(Dissimilar mixed mode bending) specimen. The materials used in the test are a commercial woven type CFRP(Carbon fiber reinforced plastic) prepreg(CF3327) and UD type GFRP(Glass fiber reinforced plastic) prepreg(HD224A). A CFRP/GFRP hybrid laminate composite is composed by the 10 plies CFRP and GFRP prepreg for DMMB. A thickness of CFRP and GFRP layer is 2.5mm and 3.0mm, respectively. Also the fulcrum location which is a loading parameter is changed from 80 to 100mm on the specimen of length 120mm because it defines the ratio of mode I to mode II. In this study, the effects of the fulcrum location are evaluated in the viewpoint of energy release rate in mode I and mode II contribution. The results show that the delamination crack initiates at higher displacement and lower load according to the increase of the fulcrum location ratio. And the variation of the energy release rate for mode I and II contributions for the mode mixity are shown.

  • A new-type of FRP-concrete composite bridge deck system is proposed and its behaviors are experimentally studied. The new-typedeck consists of FRP as a permanent form and main tension resisting member and concrete as a compression resisting member. A suitable bonding method such as silica coating is applied to the interface between FRP and concrete to ensure composite behavior. The proposed deck system uses the box-shape FRP member, while a typical FRP-concrete composite deck uses the I-shape FRP member. Theproposed deck system has inherent advantages of a FRP-concrete composite deck like corrosion free and easy construction. The new-type deck shows the equal performances compared to a previous one, and has the advantage of reducing self-weight. In this study, the static tests on 3-span FRP-concrete decks in full scale are carried out, so that load-displacement relation, stress distribution, failure mode and design criteria are analyzed. The test results show that the deflection design criterion (L/800, L: span length) is satisfied at the service load state. No concrete tensile crack occurs in the negative moment region above the main girder, regardless of no tensile reinforcement at upper concrete portion.

  • This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the structural performance of an innovative GFRP-concrete composite beam construction, which is reinforced with longitudinal GFRP pultruded box-profile and transverse steel stirrups. GFRP perfobond (PBL) shear connectors are employed to enhance the bonding performance between the GFRP profile and the concrete portion. To investigate the shear and flexural performance of this composite system, eight specimens were designed and tested under three-point and four-point bending. The main variables were the height of the composite beam and the shear span-to-depth ratio. The test results indicated that bonding cracks did not occur at the interface between the GFRP profile and the concrete until the final stage of the test. This shows that the specimens performed well as composite beams during the test and that the GFRP PBL connectors were reliable. Based on the test results, two calculation methods were used to determine the flexural and shear capacity of the composite beams. A comparative study of the test and theoretical results suggests that the proposed methods can reasonably predict both the flexural and shear capacities of the specimens, whereas the provisions of ACI 440 are relatively conservative on both counts.

  • Computer simulations are widely used to analyze passenger safety in simulated traffic accidents. ATB, Articulated Total Body, is a computer simulation model developed to predict gross human body response to such dynamic environments as vehicle crashes and pilot ejections. ATB, whose code is open, has high flexibility and application capability that users can easily insert defined modules and functions. ATB is, however, inconvenient as it was coded in FORTRAN and it needs a formated input file. Moreover, it takes much time to make input files and to modify coding errors. This study aims to increase user friendliness by adding a preprocessor program, WINATB(WINdows ATB), to the conventional ATB. WINATB, programmed in Visual C++ and OpenGL, uses ATB IV as a dynamic solver. The preprocessor helps users prepare input files through graphic interface and dialog box. An additional postprocessor makes the graphical presentation of simulated results. In these case of the frontal crash, the rear impact and the side impact, the simulation results obtained by WINATB and MADYMO(MAthematical Dynamic Model) are compared to validate the effectiveness of WINAIB.

  • Among the various alternatives to make a steel tubular member connection, making a slotted and gusset plate welded connection is one of the most frequently preferred alternatives. This type of connection is essentially an end connection that is made by slotting the tube longitudinally, inserting the gusset plate and then placing longitudinal fillet welds at the tube-to-plate interface. In this paper an experimental study on the behaviour of such connections in stainless steel is presented. 24 specimens were tested under concentrically applied axial tensile forces for varying tube-to-gusset plate weld lengths. Both circular and box section members were considered in the test program. Load-deformation curves were obtained and comparisons were made in terms of strength and ductility. The results obtained from the study were then critically examined and compared with currently available design guidance for slotted gusset plate welded tubular end connections. It is noted that no specific rules exist in international specifications on structural stainless steel which cover the design of such connections. Therefore, the results of this study are compared with the existing design rules for carbon steel.

  • Event Data Recorder(Car Black-Box) with WiFi dongle have been released, and the platform of the majority is the Linux platform. This is because the platform development is possible in little investment cost by reducing the source licensing costs by taking advantage of the open source. But utilizing Linux platform has the limitations of boot-up time and consuming processing power due to the limitation of battery capacity, to be cost-competitive to minimize the use of memory. In this paper, the real-time operating system(RTOS) is utilized to optimize these portions. MP4 encoder and Muxer are developed to be about ten seconds boot up and minimized memory. It has the advantages of operating at lower power consumption than the Linux utilizing WiFi dongle. Utilizing a WiFi dongle is to provide a progressive download feature on smart phones to lower product prices. But RTOS has the weakness in WiFi. Porting TCP /IP, Web and DHCP server and combination with the USB OTG Host interface by implementing the protocol stack are developed for WiFi. And also SPI NOR flash memory is utilized for faster boot time and cost reductions, low processing power to be consume. As the results, the developed proved the 10 seconds booting time, 24 frame rate/sec. and 10% lower power consumption.

  • Component technology was proposed and applied to software development to overcome software crisis. Software component is a black box like an integrated circuit in hardware but it can not be utilized without good support specially for helping users understand efficiently. This paper shows that data book format for understanding hardware component can be well applied to representing software component. We selected an approach to understand component by matching the contents of data book with UML and API model technique. Besides, we added the architecture part and the interface which are the most important property of software component to the data book for software components. In order to verify effectiveness of components data book we extended batch descriptor in EJB and performed an experiment providing data book to programmers with components.
