Development and Application of STEAM Class for Stratum and Fossil with Questions (질문이 있는 '지층과 화석' 관련 STEAM 수업 자료 개발 및 적용)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of 'strata-fossils' STEAM program with questions on the academic achievement, creative problem-solving ability and scientific interests of elementary students. For this purpose, the STEAM program with questions was developed and applied to the third and fourth graders in elementary school. As a result, the academic achievement, creative problem-solving ability and scientific interests of the group applying the program showed a significant improvement in the post-test than the pre-test. The result of learner satisfaction survey of the STEAM program was also high. This means that the STEAM program class with questions for 'strata-fossils' could be meaningful works to encourage students' academic achievement as well as their creative problem-solving ability and scientific interests. Therefore, it seems necessary to apply for other themes in elementary science continuously.

Device-Centered Personalized Product Recommendation Method using Purchase and Share Behavior in E-Commerce Environment (이커머스 환경에서 구매와 공유 행동을 이용한 기기 중심 개인화 상품 정보 추천 기법)

  • Personalized recommendation technology is one of the most important technologies in electronic commerce environment. It helps users overcome information overload by suggesting information that match user's interests. In e-commerce environment, both mobile device users and smart device users have risen dramatically. It creates new challenges. Our method suggests product information that match user's device interests beyond only user's interests. We propose a device-centered personalized recommendation method. Our method uses both purchase and share behavior for user's devices interests. Moreover, it considers data type preference for each device. This paper presents a new recommendation method and algorithm. Then, an e-commerce scenario with a computer, a smartphone and an AI-speaker are described. The scenario shows our work is better than previous researches.

Effects of Temperament and Character on the Specialty Interests of Medical Students (기질 및 성격 특성이 의과대학 학생의 관심 전공 선택에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives In the previous studies, it has been suggested that temperament and character may affect specialty choice in medical students. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of temperament and character on specialty interests in medical students. Methods A total 132 third-year medical students initially participated in this study. Among these participants, 128 students had filled out both demographic and Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) questionnaires. Socio-demographic data, specialty interests and Cloninger's TCI scores were obtained. The specialty interests were categorized into surgical, medical and other departments. Results Among 128 students, 88 (68.7%), 29 (22.7%) and 22 (8.6%) students chose medical, surgical and other departments, respectively. Students choosing surgery departments showed lower Harm Avoidance scores (F = 4.39, df = 1, p = 0.04) and higher Self-Directedness scores (F = 4.30, df = 1, p = 0.04) than those who chose medical departments. There was no significant differences in Novelty Seeking, Reward dependence, Persistence, Cooperativeness, Self-Transcendence scores between groups. Conclusions To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that has demonstrated the relationship between TCI scores and specialty interests of medical students in Korea. The current study suggests that temperament and character influence specialty interests in medical students. These findings could have implications for medical education research and career counseling.

Social Search Scheme Considering Recent Preferences of Social Media Users (소셜 미디어 사용자의 최근 관심사를 고려한 소셜 검색 기법)

  • The existing social search has a problem that search results are not suitable for a user since it does not take into account the recency of the user profile and the interests of similar users. Therefore, studies on a social search considering a temporal attribute and the interests of other users are required. In this paper, we propose a social search scheme that takes into account the recent interests of a user by time and the interests of the most similar users. The proposed scheme analyzes the activity information of a social media user in order to take into account the recent interests of the user. And then the proposed scheme improves the satisfaction and accuracy of search results by combining the interests of similar users with the analyzed information and performing ranking, It is shown through performance evaluation that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing scheme.

Analyses of Elementary School Students' Interests and Achievements in Science Outdoor Learning by a Brain-Based Evolutionary Approach (뇌기반 진화적 접근법에 따른 과학 야외학습이 초등학생들의 흥미와 성취도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study analyzed the effects of science outdoor activity applying a Brain-Based Evolutionary (ABC-DEF) approach on elementary school students' interest and academic achievement. Samples of the study were composed of 3 classes of 67 sixth graders in Seoul, Korea. Unit of 'Ecosystem and Environment' was selected as a object of the research. Textbook- and teachers' guidebook-based instruction was implemented in comparison group, brain-based evolutionary approach within classroom in experimental group A, and science outdoor learning by a brain-based evolutionary approach in experimental group B. In order to analyze the quantitative differences of students' interests and achievements, three tests of 'General Science Attitudes', 'Applied Unit-Related Interests', and 'Applied Unit-Related Achievement' were administered to the students. To find out the characteristics which would not be apparently revealed by quantitative tests, qualitative data such as portfolios, daily records of classroom work, and interview were also analyzed. The major results of the study are as follows. First, for post-test of interest, a statistically significant difference between comparison group and experimental group B was found. Especially, the 'interests about biology learning' factor, when analyzed by each item, was significant in two questions. Results of interviews the students showed that whether the presence or absence of outdoor learning experience influenced most on their interests about the topic. Second, for post-test of achievement, the difference among 3 groups according to high, middle, and low levels of post-interest was not statistically significant, but the groups of higher scores in post-interest tends to have higher scores in post-achievement. It can be inferred that outdoor learning by a brain-based evolutionary approach increases students' situational interests about leaning topic. On the basis of the results, the implications for the research in science education and the teaching and learning in school are discussed.

The Effects of Home and Classroom Literacy Environments on the Reading Interests of Young Children (가정과 교실의 문해환경이 유아의 읽기 흥미에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of home and classroom literacy environments on the reading interests of 104 young children aged 4-5 years old. Their 104 mothers and 52 preschool teachers also participated in this study. The instruments modified and used in this study were the questionnaire which was developed by Fitzgerald(1991), Dickinson, Temple, Hirschler & Smith(1992), and the Primary Pupil Reading Attitude Inventory by Askov & Fischbach(1973). The results of this study were as follows. First, there were significant relationships between children's physical and psychological home literacy environments and reading interests. Second, there were also significant relationships between children's physical and psychological classroom literacy environments and reading interests. Third, home and classroom literacy environments, especially physical environments of home and psychological environments of classrooms, had an influence on children's reading interests. On the basis of this study, enough provision of literacy environments may help to improve children's reading interests, leading to better reading and writing ability.

China and U.S. in Africa: A Case of Exaggerated Rivalry

  • Rise of China has correspondingly seen increased Chinese involvement at global stage and regional levels in different parts of the world. This has attracted claims of strategic competition and rivalry between China and U.S., as China is said to be working towards replacing hitherto U.S. influence. Consequently there have been calls for U.S. to counter increased Chinese involvement to safeguard U.S. influences and interests. This study aims to contribute to this debate by examining the extent to which increased Chinese involvement in Africa has, if any, supplanted U.S. strategic interests in the continent. The study contends that, Chinese involvement in Africa has entailed China creating own niche that does not necessary threaten U.S. interests in the continent as widely portrayed and imagined. This is premised on the fact that, U.S. has historically had relatively minimal strategic interests in Africa as compared to other more strategic parts of the world that China could significantly threaten. Seen in this way, increased Chinese penetration in Africa has not had immediate threats to U.S. core strategic interests, thus explaining U.S. measured response to counter Chinese presence in Africa.

The Effect of Cloze Procedure with a Cartoon on Academic Interests and Reading Achievements (만화 텍스트 빈칸 메우기 전략을 활용한 읽기 학습이 흥미 및 학업성취에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigates the effect of cloze procedure using either cartoons or texts on academic interests and reading achievements. Three equivalent classes were selected from an 1st grade in elementary school in terms of academic interests and reading achievements. While two experimental conditions used cloze procedure either with cartoons or texts during 15 lessons, the control condition used a traditional reading procedure. The results indicated that cloze procedure with cartoons enhanced academic interests in reading only for low achievement participants. Cloze procedure condition also outperformed the control condition on both immediate and delayed dictation test. In particular, cloze procedure with cartoons were quite effective for low achievement participants. Lastly, both types of cloze procedure facilitated overall comprehension test score, specifically inferential understanding test score but not factual understanding test score. Based on these findings, the types of text and learning strategy to improve academic interests and reading-related achievements were discussed.

An Analysis of the Affective Characteristics and the Demands on Education of Elementary Science gifted Students in Urban and Rural Areas (도시와 농촌지역 초등과학 영재학생들의 정의적 특성 및 교육 요구분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze affective characteristics and the demands of elementary science gifted students on gifted educations in urban and rural areas. The subjects were 196 science gifted students. The survey questionnaires were consisted of self-esteem, interests in science, scientific attitudes, and demands regarding gifted classes. The results of this study were as follows. First, self-esteem and interests in science, particularly interests toward science, toward science learning, toward science related careers, in urban gifted students were higher than those in rural areas. Whereas interests toward science activities and science anxiety of science gifted students in rural areas were significantly higher than those in urban area. Furthermore, scientific attitudes of science gifted students in urban area were higher than rural those in open-mindedness, critical-mindedness, voluntariness, creativity, whereas science gifted students in rural areas were higher than urban those in cooperation. Second, for the analysis on demands regarding class contents and methods, 'teaching content that challenges and exciting stimuli' of science gifted students in rural areas were significantly higher than those in urban area. Third, for the analysis on demands regarding educational environments, 'satisfaction with class materials provided by gifted classes' of gifted students in urban area were higher than those in rural area.

Bi-directional Fuzzy Matching Algorithm (양방향 퍼지 매칭 알고리즘: 취업정보 적용)

  • Matching customers becomes the key function in on-line mediate services. There are two matching methods: one-directional matching that requires requests from one side(e,g., information searching), bi-directional matching that considers requests from both sides. Previous bi-directional matching has difficulties of getting the interests explicitly and service collapse problems when the opposite side do not put responding interests. This paper attempts to automate the inputs of interests for bi-directional matching by calculating the interests with fuzzy matching algorithm for optimization. The results of the proposed Bi-directional Fuzzy Matching(BDFM) algorithm told that the job placement accuracy of employment information matching results is over 95%. And, BDFM gives statically significant positive effect for motivating the employment activities when analyzed the effect after completing the implementation.
