The Effects of Collocation-Based Instruction on L1-Korean High School Students' English Vocabulary Acquisition

  • This study examined the effects of collocation-based instruction on L2 vocabulary acquisition and learners' interests in it. Fifty one students were randomly assigned to the experimental group (collocation-based instruction group) and to the control group. The participants' English vocabulary capacity was checked through pre and post tests, and two surveys were used to probe the learners' vocabulary learning behaviors and their interests in English vocabulary learning respectively. To better understand the participants' opinions and feelings on the collocation-based learning, follow-up interviews were also carried out. The results showed that second language (L2) learners' vocabulary capacity was significantly improved through collocation-based instruction. However, the participants' degree of interest in vocabulary learning did not reach our expectation partly because of external factors such as the Test for the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) and lack of familiarity of collocations. Such results indicate that the high school students' rooted perception of putting importance on test-based language learning could not be easily changed since it is closely related to their immediate needs. Based on the results, this study suggested how to implement collocations into L2 classrooms effectively.

Transmission of the Region of Interest in Images Using Wavelet Transform (웨이브렛 변환을 이용한 관심영역의 부호화)

  • Region-of-Interest is the region within the image selected for the users needs. The development of multimedia has made the expectation of image telecommunication higher, but the usage of the image, image transmission time, and image storage create problems. When transmitter or the receiver stops transmission at some point, we can still see the general image and the ROI maintains better image quality if the ROI is specified beforehand. In this paper, three methods are proposed and constructed for the transmission of ROI. In the first method, the ROI and the background are separated and then encoded as described above. The second method is to encode without separating the ROI and the background. The masked region is scaled and the coefficients are increased, then the region is transmitted first. The third method is the loseless coding of the ROI. For loseless coding, real number tap cannot be restored perfectly due to the rounding error, so the method of using integers is used. The proposed method shows a better performance than EZW even in case of ROI's PSNR at quality of 40 dB.

  • Development of new and highly efficient computer technologies are providing schools and homes with faster and multi-functioning computers, and text-oriented education softwares are now being rapidly replaced by multimedia CAI. There are also increasing needs for computer-literate teachers and more effective CAI materials. The goal of this study is to present effective ways to use computers as teaching aids in mathematics classrooms and how computers affect the students' achievement, interest and attitude in mathematics. Theoretical reviews on learning theories of CAI and multimedia were made before designing teaching plans for mathematics classrooms and the plans were applied to classrooms. The result of this study shows that there is a significant difference in achievement between control group and experimental group, and also indicates that CAI increases the students' interest and attitude in mathematics to a certain extent. Although using computers in classrooms are considered to be more effective in teaching than text-oriented lectures, the number of computers in schools is limited and all the students can not take advantage of individualized drill and practice programs or tutorial programs. One way of various solutions to this problem is developing teaching materials for middle or large sized classes and providing teachers with easy-to-carry notebook computers. And also mathematics teachers should be given more chances to train themselves in developing and using CAI materials.

  • Children with autistic spectrum disorder(ASD) have a strength in visual process and systemizing, and they show interest toward things and machines. Therefore, robots have been suggested as a useful tool for the rehabilitation of the children with ASD. A robot can attract children's interest and attention, and it can provide simplified social stimulus. A robot can be applied repetitively, and programmed for the special needs of an individual child. In this study, we review literature related to the use of robots for the rehabilitation of children with ASD. For this purpose, related literature was searched with the keywords of autism and robot. We selected eleven domestic papers, and analyzed their contents to identify robots, stimulus of robots, experiment process and dependent variables.

Simplification of Moving Object Trajectory on Road Networks (도로 네트워크 상의 이동 객체 궤적의 간략화)

  • In order to analyze moving object trajectories on road networks, its representation needs to be defined correctly. The most previous methods representing moving object trajectories on road networks defined moving object trajectories as a set of passed location and its time. It is required much time in processing analysis such as retrieval for moving object trajectories. In this paper, we focus on POI(Points of Interest) on road networks and propose methods simplifying moving object trajectories based on it. Our method simplifies moving object trajectories by reducing the number of POIs that moving object trajectories passed and maintains its form after moving object trajectories were simplified.

A Study on the Use of Display and Perceived Risk according to High School Girls′ Attitudes Toward Fashion (여고생의 유행태도에 따른 의복구매시의 디스플레이 활용도와 인지위험)

  • The purpose of the present study was to investigate the use level of display and perceived risk of high school girls according to their attitudes toward fashion. Data were collected through self-administered questionnaires and analyzed by descriptive statistics, $x^2$, ANOVA, and Duncan test. The sample consisted of 390 students at four girls' high schools located in Seoul. The results are as follows : 1. Based on the attitudes toward fashion, respondents were classified into 3 groups, fashion-oriented, fashion-conformed, fashion-retarded. No differences were found in fashion attitudes among and between the groups by residing place. The group having higher interest in fashion spent more expenditure for apparels, and showed the higher interest in display, and highly regarded the needs of display. 2. The more fashion-oriented group showed higher degree of risk perceiving. Especially, they perceived psychological risk, fashionability risk, and social risk highly. And all the three groups perceived opportunity risk most. 3. In general, those who are more sensitive to fashion showed more positive attitude of risk reduction activities.

Is Currency Appreciation or Depreciation Expansionary in Thailand?

  • Many developing countries have attempted to depreciate their currencies in order to make their products cheaper, stimulate exports, shift aggregate demand to the right, and increase aggregate output. However, currency depreciation tends to increase import prices, raise domestic inflation, reduce capital inflows, and shift aggregate supply to the left. The net impact is unclear. The paper incorporates the monetary policy function in the model, which is determined by the inflation gap, the output gap, the real effective exchange rate, and the world real interest rate. Applying an extended IS-MP-AS model (Romer, 2000), the paper finds that real depreciation raised real GDP during 1997.Q1-2005.Q3 whereas real appreciation increased real GDP during 2005.Q4-2017.Q2. In addition, a higher government debt-to-GDP ratio, a lower U.S. real federal funds rate, a higher real stock price, a lower real oil price or a lower expected inflation rate would help increase real GDP. Hence, real depreciation or real appreciation may increase or reduce aggregate output, depending upon the level of economic development. Although expansionary fiscal policy is effective in stimulating the economy, caution needs to be exercised as there may be a debt threshold beyond which a further increase in the debt-to-GDO ratio would hurt economic growth.

A study of the efficient application of Discretion activity in Mathematics curriculum (수학 교과 재량활동시간의 효율적인 운영에 관한 연구)

  • For the efficient application of curriculum discretion activity, I developed the program, 'Let's go together', so that curriculum discretion activity can be applied in the classroom. The program consists of several experiences, which are <Man to man paired study>, <the learning materials for Mathematics in our lives>, <the cooperative study in the class> and <the variety experiences about Mathematics>. This study shows the following results: First, T-test about the students' learning attitude and interest in Mathematics, there was dramatic change in students' desire, interest and attitude for mathematics learning. Second, as the role of Baewomi & Dowomi in 'Man to man paired study', Baewomi & Dowomi provided students with confidence of mathematics learning. We were able to ensure this fact from students' essay after the class. Third, teachers found that the number of students who had positive attitude with Self-directed study increased. And students tried to solve mathematical problems by themselves and the time using self-directed learning experience was also increased. This study suggests that there needs more development for learning materials for mathematics in our lives.

Determining Spatial Neighborhoods in Indoor Space using Integrated IndoorGML and IndoorPOI data

  • Indoor space has been one of the focal points for geospatial research as various factors such as increasing demands for application and demand for adaptive response in emergencies have arisen. IndoorGML (Indoor Geography Markup Language) has provided a standardized method of representing the topological aspect of micro-scale environments, with its extensive specifications and flexible applicability. However, as more real-world problems and needs demand attention, suggestions to improve this standard, such as representing IndoorPOI (Indoor Points of Interest), have arisen. Hence, existing algorithms and functionalities that we use on perceiving these indoor spaces must also adapt to accommodate said improvements. In this study, we explore how to define spatial neighborhoods in indoor spaces represented by an integrated IndoorGML and IndoorPOI data. We revisit existing approaches to combine the aforementioned datasets and refine previous approaches to perform neighborhood spatial queries in 3D. We implement the proposed algorithm in three use cases using sample datasets representing a real-world structure to demonstrate its effectiveness for performing indoor spatial analysis.

Study on the Tendency of Interest of Fashion Product Development based on 3D Printing according to College Students' Fashion Life Style

  • 3D printing is attracting attention from all industries as it enables the development of personalized product design to meet consumer needs by establishing a mutual connection system between production, management and consumers. However, there are still limitations to applying them as apparel materials, and research on the recognition of 3D printing or the preference for fashion products is needed to actually commercialize 3D printing in the fashion industry. In this study on the development of various product designs using 3D printing technology in the fashion industry, an analysis of 255 questionnaires was conducted to determine the preferences and purchase intention trends of fashion product design using 3D printing for college students. Data analysis was performed with IBM SPSS Statistics (V.24). 'Fashion sensitive pursuit', 'Individuality & brand pursuit' and 'Functional convenience' was interested in fashion accessories using 3D printing technology and customized fashion apparel products using 3D printing. 'Functional Convenience-oriented' and 'Practical Purchasing-oriented' type showed that the functionality and durability of products made using 3D printing technology were important. And 'Individuality pursuit' type indicated that design and applied materials were important when producing products using 3D printing technology.
