  • Purpose: This study investigates patterns of small group interaction and examines the influence among graduate nursing students of online collaborative learning strategies on small group interaction patterns, task performance and learning attitude in web-based team learning environments. Method: To analyze patterns of small group interaction, group discussion dialogues were reviewed by two instructors. Groups were divided into two categories depending on the type of feedback given (passive or active). For task performance, evaluation of learning processes and numbers of postings were examined. Learning attitude toward group study and coursework were measured via scales. Results: Explorative interactions were still low among graduate nursing students. Among the students given active feedback, considerable individual variability in interaction frequency was revealed and some students did not show any specific type of interaction pattern. Whether given active or passive feedback, groups exhibited no significant differences in terms of task performance and learning attitude. Also, frequent group interaction was significantly related to greater task performance. Conclusion: Active feedback strategies should be modified to improve task performance and learning attitude among graduate nursing students.

  • The purpose of this study is (1) to investigate how children's peer interaction type and joint problem-solving performance differ, depending on a partner's age, in such a situation as they are asked to solve problems with their peer and (2) to investigate relationship between children's peer interaction type and joint problem-solving performance. Results reveal that children's problem-solving performance receives more benefit in the interactions with older peers, rather than those with younger ones. It can also be improved by higher level of collaborative interactions such as abstract collaborative explanations in joint activities. It is influenced positively by collaborative interactions, expecially when the children are in the same age groups. Results here were discussed in terns Piagetian and Vygotskian theories.

  • In this paper, we investigate the inter-organizational information systems effect to supply chain partnerships, and subsequently to the performance. The conceptual model for the causal relationships among interorganizational systems usage, interaction, partnership, and supply chain performances has been developed. Theoretical framework is based on the partnership research in relationship marketing area, and the interaction model from IMP group. The questionnaires are designed to test the hypotheses of the conceptual model. The survey result supports our hypotheses that collaborative IT effects to increase the interaction between the firms, and interaction causes to enhance the partnership quality. Also, the level of partnership shows strong positive correlation with the supply chain performances. Despite the limitations of collected sample data size, our study reveals the fact that inter-organizational information systems contribute to supply chain performance through enhancing the interaction and partnership level between the supply chain partners. Our research result is distinct from the most extant literatures that investigated the firm's collaboration impact on interorganizational systems usage.

  • Several researches have been studied to enhance the seismic performance of nuclear power plants (NPPs) by application of seismic isolation. If a seismic base isolation system is applied to NPPs, seismic performance of nuclear power plants should be reevaluated considering the soil-structure interaction effect. The seismic fragility analysis method has been used as a quantitative seismic safety evaluation method for the NPP structures and equipment. In this study, the seismic performance of an isolated NPP is evaluated by seismic fragility curves considering the soil-structure interaction effect. The designed seismic isolation is introduced to a containment building of Shin-Kori NPP which is KSNP (Korean Standard Nuclear Power Plant), to improve its seismic performance. The seismic analysis is performed considering the soil-structure interaction effect by using the linearized model of seismic isolation with SASSI (System for Analysis of Soil-Structure Interaction) program. Finally, the seismic fragility is evaluated based on soil-isolation-structure interaction analysis results.

  • As the wireless communication technologies are being studied for application to marine communication networks in a fusion of marine industries and IT technology, this paper proposes a HARQ-ARQ interaction scheme for reliable communication between the smart ships. Moreover, this paper evaluates the performance of the HARQ-ARQ interaction schemes through the computer simulation. In the HARQ-ARQ interaction scheme for marine network systems, as a HARQ acknowledgement is implicitly utilized as an ARQ acknowledgement. Hence, the HARQ-ARQ interaction scheme can reduce the packet delay. However, the HARQ-ARQ interaction scheme has problems caused by the error of HARQ feedback messages. Hence, this paper considers the effect of error of HARQ feedback messages on the performance of the HARQ-ARQ interaction scheme, in marine network systems. The simulation results show that the HARQ-ARQ interaction scheme can improve the delay performance of the ships in the marine network systems.

  • The vast number of biomedical literature is an important source of biomedical interaction information discovery. However, it is complicated to obtain interaction information from them because most of them are not easily readable by machine. In this paper, we present a method for extracting biomedical interaction information assuming that the biomedical Named Entities (NEs) are already identified. The proposed method labels all possible pairs of given biomedical NEs as INTERACTION or NO-INTERACTION by using a Maximum Entropy (ME) classifier. The features used for the classifier are obtained by applying various NLP techniques such as POS tagging, base phrase recognition, parsing and predicate-argument recognition. Especially, specific verb predicates (activate, inhibit, diminish and etc.) and their biomedical NE arguments are very useful features for identifying interactive NE pairs. Based on this, we devised a twostep method: 1) an interaction verb extraction step to find biomedically salient verbs, and 2) an argument relation identification step to generate partial predicate-argument structures between extracted interaction verbs and their NE arguments. In the experiments, we analyzed how much each applied NLP technique improves the performance. The proposed method can be completely improved by more than 2% compared to the baseline method. The use of external contextual features, which are obtained from outside of NEs, is crucial for the performance improvement. We also compare the performance of the proposed method against the co-occurrence-based and the rule-based methods. The result demonstrates that the proposed method considerably improves the performance.

  • This research investigated young children's social interaction and task performance in dyadic collaboration. The independent variables were gender and social skill level(high/low groups). Twenty-four pairs each 4-year-old boys and 4-year-old girls(total 96 subjects) worked at a block reconstruction. Two researchers judged degree of dyadic collaboration. Data were processed by 2 way ANOVA and Pearson's product correlation. While no main effect for gender was found, the effect for social skill level(high/low groups)was significant for social interaction. There was positive correlation between social interaction and task performance.
