  • As a field in Digital Arts, interactive video introduced the mirror metaphor to the foundation of media, given its characteristic as a medium that extracts an audience image in a particular perspective. The interactive video work introduced in this paper addresses conceptual topics in the extension of Zhuangzi's Butterfly Dream and illustrates the technological approaches that employ an intensity-based computer vision processing in order to obtain the silhouette of audience for multiple graphical butterflies to draw an audience image. Users generate narratives in the interaction with the projected image. Sound is used in order for the system to provide augmented perception in the space and to add more rooms for narratives. The computer vision and the graphics methods introduced in this paper are suggested as tools for interactive video.

  • This paper aims to propose a framework of content creating group with creativity under new convergence environments. The framework is built based on content concept hierarchy(deep/surface) relating with the creativity of group members. The diversity of group members(potential creativity) decrease and change into creative abilities in one unified view at each content concept hierarchy in time. To do this, three methods of building a creative group(interaction-base, direction-base, hybrid) are proposed. Cooperating processes and operators are designed to promote creative abilities in the content producing group. These cooperations are considering new media convergence industry's job road map(IPTV) and fundamental content attributes(semantic, narrative, discourse). In the framework, creative content is produced with the help of member's cultural openness, media richness and synchronicity, hierachical adaptability on dissimilarity. Deep level creativity of cognitive semiotics on moving image content is composed of psychological, transformational, situational creating abilities in the structure of group members. Designing analogy, metaphor, symbol operators help members to traverse deep structure of content concept hierarchy. Our framework has strong points to relate fundamental content deep structure with structure of content producing group and to induce creativity on cognitive structure of human being.

  • This paper presents the artistic background and implementation structure of a conversational artificial intelligence interactive artwork, "An Evolving GAIA". Recent artworks based on artificial intelligence technology are introduced. Development of biomimetics and artificial life technology has burred differentiation of machine and human. In this paper, artworks presenting machine-life metaphor are shown, and the distinct implementation of conversation system is emphasized in detail. The artwork recognizes and follows the movement of audience using its eyes for natural interaction. It listens questions of the audience and replies appropriate answers by text-to-speech voice, using the conversation system implemented with an Android client in the artwork and a webserver based on the question-answering dictionary. The interaction gives to the audience discussion of meaning of life in large scale and draws sympathy for the artwork itself. The paper shows the mechanical structure, the implementation of conversational system of the artwork, and reaction of the audience which can be helpful to direct and make future artificial intelligence interactive artworks.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the difference in advertising effect of visual rhetoric type of Facebook ads depending on the user sensitivity and level of empathy. The experiment was designed as a between-subjects factorial design (visual rhetoric type) × 2 (brand sensitivity) × 2 (level of empathic understanding). The results of the experiment performed to analyze the strategies of Facebook ads for ads effectiveness can be summarized as follows: a three-way interaction effect for persuasive effects was found among the type of visual rhetoric, brand sensitivity, and empathic understanding for both types of visual rhetoric. Breaking down it by type of rhetoric, no interacting effect was observed between brand sensitivity and empathic understanding levels for the visual simile ads in most of the dependent variables. For the visual metaphor ads, however, the brand sensitivity and empathic understanding levels were found to have interaction effect in all dependent variables.

  • The purpose of this paper is to review the importance of situated cognition and the features of MOO(Multi-user Object Oriented)environments for effective foreign language learning. Learning foreign languages is beyond simply recalling for the vocabularies or expression usages of targeted languages. As much the same as children naturally acquire their mother languages among active and social interactions with other surrounding people, foreign languages should be told in the circumstances and contexts for authentic applications of foreign languages. The MOO, one of the virtual realities with spatial metaphors on the text basis, has been gaining high attentions from educational fields, thanks to the strong functions of social contexts and learner interactions. This paper approaches the features of MOO as foreign language learning environments, in terms of activity, context and interaction.

  • The concept that human and brand can related to each other is referred to as 'brand relationship' or 'consumer-brand relationship. By arguing that the concept of brand relationship is a readily understandable analogue, it appears that relationship thinking in the context of consumers and brands sometimes is taken for granted without thoroughly discussing its applicability. In this perspective, this paper tests the limitations with the relationship metaphor and interpersonal relationship theory by comparing the differences among product categories. And research findings as follow like these. First, even if many companies seek to anthropomorphize their brands, consumers may still don't consider them as human. Second, the possibility of personification is much higher in product categories like lead higher interaction between consumers and brands and give higher enjoyment than those of lower. And finally, consumer's personification of products are not essential factors that lead higher brand relationship.

  • This paper considers the research content and its historical significance of the Study of Nature conducted by John Ruskin(1819-1900) who had a profound influence on art, architecture, social reformation, and preservation of natural environment in Great Britain. Because Ruskin's Study of Nature would be the key to understand totally the implicative meaning of his various academic trials for integrating a wider contexts among human, culture, and society, without being bound by the rules of conventional disciplines. For Ruskin, 'Nature' is defined as 'a system' governing every aspects of human and non-human beings, formulating certain laws of composition. This system has an ecological quality to form a state of harmony by internal interaction and process. Such organic quality of nature worked as 'a metaphor' in Ruskin's research practices. Therefore, Ruskin's Study of Nature would be the conceptual basis for organizing and connecting its various elements of Ruskin's spiritual world.

  • In the conventional desktop PC environment, keyboard and mouse are used to process the user input and monitor displays the visual information as an output device. In order to manipulate the digital information, we move the virtual cursor to select the desired graphical icon on the monitor The cursor represents the relative motion of the physical mouse on the desk. This desktop metaphor does not provide intuitive interface through human sensation. In this paper, we introduce a novel tangible interface which allows the user to interact with computers using a physical tool called "Smartpuck". SmartPuck system bridges the gap between analog perception and response in human being and digital information on the computer. The system consists of table display based on a PDP, SmartPuck equipped with rotational part and button for the user's intuitive and tactile input, and a sensing system to track the position of SmartPuck. Finally, we will show examples working with the system.

  • What is the semantic function of visual image in Contemporary art? This article proposes that representation is semantically still important in post-modernism as well as in modernism. The semantic function of representation has been changed by keeping pace with times. In modernism the 'outer representation' changed to 'inner representation', and in postmodernism the 'inner representation' changed to 'metaphorical representation'. The 'outer representation' means that image indicates a certain object or subject as the classical realism. In this case, the meaning of image is subordinate to an object, and a one-to-one correspond existed between the image and the object. Because this 'outer representation' is focused on an object but subject's intention, the indicative function of meaning is definite and singular. The 'inner representation' means that image exposes the fundamentals or process of an object. In this case, the meaning of image resolves itself into an absolute fundamental, and one-to-many correspond existed between the image and the object. Because this 'inner representation' is focused on essence and substance but an external form, the indicative function of meaning is inclusive and general. The 'metaphorical representation' means that image critically relates social constraint and condition as metaphor and allegory. In this case, the meaning of image is not subordinate to an object and a subject, and the image and the object indicate interactively. Because this 'metaphorical representation' is focused on interaction between subject, object, and interpreter, the indicative function of meaning is differant and ecological. This article focused on the representation because I believe that continuous thinking of totality can be opened by cognitive mapping, even though we never understand the world totally in the chaotic post modern age.

  • The Movie, A Werewolf Boy, describes metaphorically the hidden desire of female audience. The majority of stories about wolves contains fear of wolves inherited by and learned through human history struggling with the nature. They also shows punishment and reward toward wolves as a cultural symbol of evil. This study focuses on analyzing wolves as a metaphor of hidden original desire rather than as a subject of fear and punishment. Soon-Hee's experience with a wolf-boy in her period of puberty and her remembering the experience in her old age expresses her original sexual desire. The movie, A Werewolf boy does not directly deal with sexual content. However, SU-NI's growth through the interaction with the wolf-boy informs us Freudian theory of sex and the mechanism of sexual desire and its repression or realization. Brun Bettelheim's "Little Red Riding Hood" was used to analyze Soon-hee's desire during her puberty and Clarissa Estes's "Women Who Run with the Wolves" were used to explore SU-NI's wildness forgotten in her elderlyhood. This study shows in the process of wolf boy's transformation from biological being into social being awakened the hidden and original desire of woman.
