  • This study investigated whether the whitening effects of fullerene serum occurred through improvement of melanin production and skin tone and evaluated its potential for use as a cosmetic material for adult women aged 30-55 with dull skin color and pigmentation. Subjects were divided into a control group with fullerene-less serum (B) and an experimental group with serum containing 0.1% fullerene (A) and evaluated over 8 weeks. Visual assessment and measurement of skin conditions (melanin index, skin brightness) were conducted before use of and 4 and 8 weeks after use of the product, and a questionnaire survey and safety assessment were conducted at the end of the experiment. The results revealed that the highest decrease was 0.37% in the experimental group (A) after eight weeks of use of the product, but that this difference was not statistically significant. Moreover, no significant differences were observed upon inter-group comparison. Evaluation of changes in the melanin index and inter-group comparison revealed a significant decline in the experimental group (A) at all time points. Additionally, the $L^*$ value (skin brightness) of the experimental group (A) showed a significant increase (improvement) after eight weeks, while in inter-group comparison revealed a significant increase (improvement) at all time points (4 and 8 weeks later) (p<0.05). Based on a questionnaire survey of efficacy, positive response rates such as improvement of the target parts on week 8 were high in terms of 'improvement of skin color.' Moreover, the safety assessment revealed no adverse reactions. In conclusion, serum containing 0.1% fullerene revealed improved melanin production and skin tone (brightness) and confirmed its potential for use as a cosmetic material with brightening efficacy. Taken together, the results of this study indicate systematic investigation of the effective application and cosmetics formulations of this product are warranted.

  • $Li_2B_4O_7$ and $Na_2B_4O_7$ were synthesized with boron isotopic standard material for the measurement of boron isotopes of positive ions (PTIMS) such as $Li_2BO_2{^+}$ (mass 56, 57) and $Na_2BO_2{^+}$ (mass 88, 89) instead of boron mass 10 and 11. The negative ions (NTIMS) such as $^{10}BO_2{^-}$ and $^{11}BO_2{^-}$(mass 42와 43) were also measured with the same boron isotopic standard material. The precision and accuracy were compared between each method, and prescan of isobaric effect was studied. Good result was obtained from NTIMS method which provided the stable and enough peak intensities with good precision and accuracy. The measurement of boron isotopes were performed in ground water sample with about 8 ng-B ($5{\mu}L$ sample solution) obtained from IAEA for international inter-comparison analysis. The standard deviation was found to be 0.03%. Boron content of this ground water was measured using the NTIMS-IDMS. The result was $1.65{\pm}0.003ug-B/mL$ which was better precision compared to the ICP-AES result.

  • South Korea is quite vegetation rich country which has 63% forests and 16% cropland area. Massive NOx emissions from megacities, therefore, are easily combined with BVOCs emitted from the forest and cropland area, then produce high ozone concentration. BVOCs emissions have been estimated using well-known emission models, such as BEIS (Biogenic Emission Inventory System) or MEGAN (Model of Emission of Gases and Aerosol from Nature) which were developed using non-Korean emission factors. In this study, we ran MEGAN v2.1 model to estimate BVO Cs emissions in Korea. The MO DIS Land Cover and LAI (Leaf Area Index) products over Korea were used to run the MEGAN model for June 2012. Isoprene and Monoterpenes emissions from the model were inter-compared against the enclosure chamber measurements from Taehwa research forest in Korea, during June 11 and 12, 2012. For estimating emission from the enclosed chamber measurement data. The initial results show that isoprene emissions from the MEGAN model were up to 6.4 times higher than those from the enclosure chamber measurement. Monoterpenes from enclosure chamber measurement were up to 5.6 times higher than MEGAN emission. The differences between two datasets, however, were much smaller during the time of high emissions. More inter-comparison results and the possibilities of improving the MEGAN modeling performance using local measurement data over Korea will be presented and discussed.

  • Objective : Our retrospective study aimed to determine whether 16-slice computerized tomography (CT) angiography optimized sharp kernel is suitable for the evaluation of visibility, luminal patency and re-stenosis of intracranial stents in comparison with conventional angiography. Methods : Fifteen patients with symptomatic intracranial stenotic lesions underwent balloon expandable stent deployment of these lesions (10 middle cerebral arteries, 2 intracranial vertebral arteries, and 3 intracranial internal carotid arteries). CT angiography follow-up ranged from 6 to 15 months (mean follow-up, 8 months) after implantation of intracranial stents and conventional angiography was confirmed within 2 days. Curved multiplanar reformations with maximal intensity projection (MIP) with optimal window settings for assessment of lumen of intracranial stents were evaluated for visible lumen diameter, stent patency (contrast distal to the stent as an indirect sign), and re-stenosis by two experienced radiologists who blinded to the reports from the conventional angiography. Results : All of stents deployed into symptomatic stenotic lesions. All stents were classified as patent and no re-stenosis, which was correlated with results of conventional angiography. Parts of the stent lumen could be visualized in all cases. On average, 57% of the stent lumen diameter was visible using optimized sharp kernel. Significant improvement of lumen visualization (22%, p<0.01) was observed using the optimized sharp kernel compared with the standard sharp kernel. Inter-observer agreements on the measurement of lumen diameter and density were judged as good, respectively (p<0.05). Conclusion : Sixteen-slice CT using the optimized sharp kernel may provide a useful information for evaluation of lumen diameter patency, and re-stenosis of intracranial stents.

  • Purpose: Analysis of lower nose and upper lip asymmetry in patients with unilateral cleft lip nose deformity has been proceeded through direct measurement and photo analysis. But there are limitation in presenting real image because of its 2 dimensional trait. The authors analyzed such an asymmetry using 3D VECTRA system (Canfield, NJ, USA) in quantitative way. Methods: In 25 Patients with unilateral cleft lip nose deformity(male 12, female 13, age ranging from 4 to 19), patients with right side deformity were 10 and left were 15. Analysis of asymmetry was proceeded through 3D VECTRA system. After taking 3 dimensional photo, alar area, upper lip area, nostril perimeter, nostril area, Cupid's bow length, nostril height and nostril width were measured. Correlation coefficient and inter data quotients were calculated. Results: In nostril perimeter, maximal difference of cleft side and non - cleft side was 39.3%, asymmetric quotient Qasy = Qcl/Qncl(Qcl, value of cleft side; Qncl, value of non - cleft side) was ranged from 0.84 to 1.85 and in seven cases the length of cleft side was smaller. In nostril area, maximal difference was 69.6% and in 13 cases cleft side was smaller. In lower nasal area, maximal difference was 37.2% asymmetric quotient Qasy = Qcl/Qncl was ranged from 0.47 to 2.03 and in 20 cases cleft side was smaller. The correlation coefficients of nostril perimeter and area were 0.8345. Conclusion: Using 3D VECTRA system, the authors can measure nostril perimeter and lower nasal area that could not been measured with previous methods. Asymmetry of midface was analyzed through area comparison in quantitative way. Futhermore, post operative change can be measured in quantitative method.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of stabilization exercise and breathing exercise on the flexion relaxation phenomenon (FRP) and respiratory parameters in patients with chronic low back pain. Methods : We randomly allocated 30 chronic low back pain patients (CLBP) to a stabilization exercise (SE) group (n=15) and a breathing exercise (BE) group (n=15). FRP was measured using surface electromyography (SEMG). Thoracic excursion was measured with a cloth tape measurement technique. The SE group participated in a stabilization exercise program and the BE group participated in a breathing exercise program three times a week for 12 weeks. The data was analyzed using paired t-tests for comparisons of flexion relaxation ratio (FRR) and respiratory variables. Independent t-tests were used for comparison of inter-group FRR and respiratory variables. The significance level was set at .05. Results : FRP variables-ES FRR (Flex/MVF), ES FRR (Ext/MVF), MF FRR (Flex/MVF), and MF FRR (Ext/MVF) values-increased significantly after exercise in both the SE and BE groups (p<.05). The thoracic excursion measurements after exercise increased significantly in both groups (p<.001). VAS values decreased significantly in both groups (p<.001). There were no significant differences between the two groups in FRP variables-ES FRR (Flex/MVF), ES FRR (Ext/MVF), MF FRR (Flex/MVF), and MF FRR (Ext/MVF)-or VAS values after exercise (p>.05). For thoracic excursion after exercise, the BE group was significantly higher than the SE group (p<.001). Conclusion : We found that FRP and respiratory variables increased significantly after SE and BE for 12 weeks in CLBP. Thoracic excursion-a respiratory variable-suggests that treatment was more effective in the BE group than the SE group.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to discover which breathing technique is more effective in improving respiratory function by applying different breathing techniques-the chest expansion respiratory technique and the abdominal expansion respiratory technique-to adults in the same aerobic exercise situation. Methods : In this study, 30 people were randomly assigned to two groups: chest expansion respiratory technique with aerobic exercise (A group) and abdominal expansion respiratory technique with aerobic exercise (B group). Group A was asked to breathe after wrapping their rib cage with an elastic band, and Group B was asked to breathe after wrapping their abdomen with an elastic band. A total of 3 sets of 30 breaths were performed, 3 times a week for 6 weeks. For statistical processing, an independent t-test was used to verify homogeneity between the two groups, and a repeated measure analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare differences according to the period for each group. Results : The changes in FVC and FEV1 for each group following 6 weeks of intervention are as follows. In comparison according to the intervention period, there was a significant increase in all groups depending on the timing of measurement (p<.05), and as a result of the inter-subject effect test, there was no significant difference between groups (p>.05). In addition, there was no interaction effect between period and group (p>.05). Conclusion : The conclusion of this study is that FVC and FEV1 values increased according to the intervention period in both groups; therefore, it can be suggested that flexible breathing techniques can be applied depending on the patient's physical situation when applying a breathing program to improve respiratory function.

  • Purpose: The aim was to assess how the background site affects the Gates' glomerular filtration rate(GFR) measurement using Tc-99m-DTPA in correlation with GFR by I-125-lothalamate method. Material and methods: The study populations were 63 adults with 39 men and 24 women aged from 20 to 59 yrs (mean=37.9 yrs). The fellowing five background regions of interest were used in measurement of GFR using Gates' method: 1) lower side of each kidney(subrenal), 2) around each kidney(circumferential), 3) upper side of each kidney(suprarenal), 4) lateral side of each kidney(lateral), 5) between the two kidneys(inter-renal). We also measured GFR using I-125-iothalamate in each subject. The two studies were separated by 1 to 3 weeks. The subjects were divided into two groups by renal depth. Group 1 with renal $depth{\geq}7cm$ and group 2 with renal depth<7cm. We calculated the means and standard deviations of the GFRs measured by two studies. And we statistically analyzed the correlation and differences among GFRs by Gates' method and the GFR by iothalamate method with correlation analysis. Results: The GFRs by Gates' method using suprarenal and inter-renal background correction showed better correlation with the GFR measured by I-125-iothalamate. And GFRs measured by Gates' method showed statistically significant correlation with the GFR measured by I-125-iothalamate in the group with renal depth<7cm. But GFRs measured by Gates' method did not show statistically significant correlation with the GFR measured by I-125-iothalamate in the group with renal $depth{\geq}7cm$. Conclusion: GFRs measured with Gates' method showed higher correlation with the GFR measured by I-125-iothalamate when the regions of interest were plated over the suprarenal and inter-renal backgrounds. And GFRs measured with Gates method showed statistically significant correlation with the GFR measured by I-125-iothalamate in the group with renal depth<7cm.

  • This study was carried out to develop an optimized analytical method using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) applied to canthaxanthin, which is not yet designated as a food colorant in Korea, as well as to perform validation and uncertainty evaluation of this method. Official methods of AOAC, UK, and Japan with HPLC-UV detection were evaluated for the analysis of canthaxanthin by comparison of linearity, resolution, selectivity, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantitation (LOQ), accuracy, precision, recovery, inter-laboratory tests, and uncertainty measurement. The calibration curves showed high linearity with an $R_2$ value of over 0.999 for canthaxanthin standard solutions in all three official methods. The official method of Japan exhibited the best results in terms of resolution and selectivity, including the lowest LOD and LOQ. The average coefficients of variation were calculated as less than five of three institutes with a precision value less than 1, accuracy near 100%, and recovery ratio between $100{\pm}10%$. The expanded uncertainty for canthaxanthin was estimated to be $39.5{\pm}5.29mg/kg$ (95% confidence level, k=2), and the uncertainty of measurement was 13.4%. In this study, official methods of canthaxanthin were compared and the validities verified. The results will be further applied to establish an authorized analytical method for canthaxanthin in Korea.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the differences and reproducibility of Hounsfield unit (HU) value and volume measurements on different computed tomography (CT) scanner types and different collimations by using a gelatin phantom. The phantom consisting of five synthetic simulated calculus spanning diameters from 3.0 mm to 12.0 mm with 100 HU was scanned using a two-channel multi-detector row CT (MDCT) scanner, a four-channel MDCT scanner, and two 64-channel MDCT scanners. For all different scanner types, the thinnest possible collimation and the second thinnest collimation was used. The HU values and volumes of the synthetic simulated calculus were independently measured three times with minimum intervals of 2 weeks and by three experienced veterinary radiologists. ANOVA and Scheff$\acute{e}$ test for the multiple comparison were performed for statistical comparison of the HU values and volumes of the synthetic simulated calculus according to different CT scanner types and different collimations. The reproducibility of the HU value and volume measurements was determined by calculating Cohen's k. The reproducibility of HU value and volume measurements was very good. HU value varied between different CT scanner types, among different beam collimations. However, there was not statistically significant difference. The percent error (PE) decreased as the collimation thickness decreased, but the decrease was statistically insignificant. In addition, no statistically significant difference in the PEs of the different CT scanner types was found. It can be concluded that the CT scanner type insignificantly affects HU value and the volumetric measurement, but that a thinner collimation tends to be more useful for accurate volumetric measurement.
