  • Among various image fusion methods, intensity-hue-saturation(IHS) technique is capable of quickly merging the massive volumes of data. For IKONOS imagery, IHS can yield satisfactory 'spatial' enhancement but may introduce 'spectral' distortion, appearing as a change in colors between compositions of resampled and fused multispectral bands. To solve this problem a fast IHS fusion technique with spectral adjustment is presented. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach can provide better performance than the conventional IHS method, in both processing speed and image quality.

  • In the satellite image fusion, the most important point is to preserve both the spatial detail of panchromatic(PAN) image and the spectral information of multispectral(MS) image. Among various image fusion techniques, fusion technique using Intensity-Hue-Saturation(IHS) transform is widely used and it has advantage that computation is very simple. In this study, a fusion technique using fast IHS transform and trade-off parameter $\alpha^i$ proposed. Proposed fusion technique permits customization of the trade-off between the spectral information and spatial detail quality of the fused image through the evaluation of two quality indices: a spectral index(the spectral ERGAS) and a spatial one(the spatial ERGAS). Based on the result of experiment using IKONOS image, we confirmed the proposed fusion technique was more effective in preserving spatial detail and spectral information than existing fusion techniques using fast IHS transform.

  • Although the intensity-hue-saturation (IHS) method for pan-sharpening has a spectral distortion problem, it is a popular method in the remote sensing community and has been used as a standard procedure in many commercial packages due to its fast computing and easy implementation. Recently, IHS-like approaches have tried to overcome the spectral distortion problem inherited from the IHS method itself and yielded a good result. In this paper, a similar IHS-like method with least squares for WorldView-2 pan-sharpening is presented. In particular, unlike the previous methods with three or four-band multispectral images for pan-sharpening, six bands of WorldView-2 multispectral image located within the range of panchromatic spectral radiance responses are considered in order to reduce the spectral distortion during the merging process. As a result, the new approach provides a satisfactory result, both visually and quantitatively. Furthermore, this shows great value in spectral fidelity of WorldView-2 eight-band multispectral imagery.

  • Recently, Gonzalez-Audicana et al. proposed the substitute wavelet intensity (SWI) method which provided a solution based on the intensity-hue-saturation (IHS) method for the fusing of panchromatic (PAN) and multispectral (MS) images. Although the spectral quality of the fused MS images is enhanced, this method is not efficient enough to quickly merge massive volumes of data from satellite. To overcome this problem, we introduce a new SWI method based on a fast IHS transform to implement efficiently as an alternative procedure. In addition, we show that the method is well applicable for fusing IKONOS PAN with MS images.

  • The KT(Kauth-Thomas) and IHS(Intensity-Hue-Saturation) transformation techniques were introduced and compared to investigate fire-scarred areas with single post-fire Landsat 7 ETM+ image. This study consists of two parts. First, using only geometrically corrected imagery, it was examined whether or not the different level of fire-damaged areas could be detected by simple slicing method within the image enhanced by the IHS transform. As a result, since the spectral distribution of each class on each IHS component was overlaid, the simple slicing method did not seem appropriate for the delineation of the areas of the different level of fire severity. Second, the image rectified by both radiometrically and topographically was enhanced by the KT transformation and the IHS transformation, respectively. Then, the images were classified by the maximum likelihood method. The cross-validation was performed for the compensation of relatively small set of ground truth data. The results showed that KT transformation produced better accuracy than IHS transformation. In addition, the KT feature spaces and the spectral distribution of IHS components were analyzed on the graph. This study has shown that, as for the detection of the different level of fire severity, the KT transformation reflects the ground physical conditions better than the IHS transformation.

  • The intensity-hue-saturation (IHS) technique has become a standard procedure in image analysis. It enhances the colour of highly correlated data. Unfortunately, IHS technique is sensitive to the properties of the analyzed area and usually faces colour distortion problems in the fused process. This paper explores the relationship of colour between before and after the fused process and the change in colour space of images. Subsequently, the fused colours are transformed back into the 'simulative' true colours by the following steps: (1) For each pixel of fused image that match with original pixel (of the coarse spectral resolution image) is transformed back to the true colour of original pixel. (2) The value for interpolating pixels is compensated to preserve the DN ratio between the original pixel and it's vicinity. The 'compensative matrix' is constructed by the DN of fused images and simulation of scaling process. An illustrative example of a Landsat and SPOT fused image also demonstrates the simulative true colour fusion methods.

  • Color image is largely corrupted by various ambient illumination. However, human perceives always white color as white under any illumination because of a characteristic of human vision, called color constancy. In the conventional algorithm which applied the constancy effect, after the RGB color space is transformed to the IHS(Intensity, Hue, and Saturation) color space, then the hue is preserved and the intensity or the saturation is properly enhanced. Then the enhanced IHS color is reversely transformed to the RGB color space. In this process, the color distortion is included due to the color gamut error. But in the proposed algorithm, there is not transformation. In that, the RGB color is considered as 3 dimensional color vector and we assume that white color is the natural daylight. As the color vector of the illumination can be calculated as the average vector of R, G, and B image, we can achieve the constancy effect by simply rotating the illumination vector to the white color vector. The simulation results show the efficiency of the vector rotating process for color image enhancement.
