  • The interference among the rain radars and interference in the adjacent wireless station due to the spurious signals from the rain radar were analyzed in this paper. The rain radar measures the rain intensity using S-band signal. The measured data are utilized in forecasting the rainfall. The interference among the rain radars or in the adjacent wireless stations may be caused by the high output power of rain radar. Based on the propagation analysis of S band signal and the deduced interference protection ratio of rain radar, the interference due to the rain radar are analyzed. Also, the radiation spectrum characteristics of a rain radar are deduced from the caused interference effects by the spurious signals of the rain radar.

  • This paper is to investigate the characteristics of debris flow landslides in Gangwon Province through literature review, data collection and analyses and site investigation. As results of data analyses about landslides occurred currently in this province, the landslide in the form of debris flow is found to be 55 %. Therefore major loss and costs are caused by discharge of soil and rock fragments from landslide. From results of analyzing the geometrical characteristics of landslide, length of most of landslide is less than 200 m, their width is in the range of 10 - 40 m, most of them are know to be occurred in lower elevation than 400 m. Slope angle is in the range of 25 - 35 degrees. Comparing the period of rainfall intensity with the time of landslide being occurred, occurrence of landslide is quite related to duration of a heavy rainfall. For measures of controlling water flow discharge and debris flow, considering geological and topographical ground conditions, appropriate selection and building check dam, erosion control dam and ring net is very beneficial for reducing the loss and costs caused by the landslide of debris flow.

  • We investigated the perceptual structure of Korean consonants by analyzing the confusion among consonants in various vowel contexts. The 36 CV syllable types combined by 18 consonants and 2 vowels (/i/ and /u/) were presented with masking noises or in degraded intensity. The confusion data were analyzed by the INDSCAL (Individual Difference Scaling), ADCLUS (Additive Clustering) and the probability of the transmitted information. The results were compared with those of a previous study with /a/ vowel context (Bae and Kim, 2002). The overall results showed that the laryngeal features-aspiration, lax and tense-are the most salient features in the perception of Korean consonant regardless of vowel contexts, but the perceptual saliency of place features varies across vowel conditions. In high vowel (front and back vowel) contexts, sibilant consonants were perceptually salient compared to in low vowel contexts. In back vowel contexts, grave (labial and velar) consonants were perceptually salient. These findings imply that place features and vowel features strongly interact in speech perception as well as in speech production. All statistical measures from our confusion data ensured that the perceptual structure of Korean consonants correspond to the hierarchical structure suggested in the feature geometry (Clements, 1991). We discuss the link between speech perception and production as the basis of phonology.

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were(a) to identify smoking behavior by following a cohort representative of the population of 4th grade elementary schoolers in South Korea over a four-year period(2004-2007), and(b) to explore predictors of smoking initiation among non-smokers in Wave 1. Methods: Secondary data, the Korea Youth Panel Study, was analyzed in this study. First, frequencies or percentages were calculated to identify smoking behavior(i.e., smoking initiation, smoking intensity, and smoking duration). Second, binary logistic regression analysis was performed to examine significant factors related to smoking initiation. Results: Smoking initiation and daily smoking were more pronounced when the participants entered middle school. In bivariate analysis, statistically significant predictors of smoking initiation were loneliness at school, self-control, delinquent behavior, depressive symptoms, and stress. However, after controlling for other factors, only a high level of risk-taking tendency and a greater number of delinquent behaviors remained statistically significant. Conclusion: Based on greater involvement in smoking among first-year middle schoolers, smoking prevention strategies should be provided to elementary schoolers rather than middle schoolers. A risk-taking tendency and delinquent behaviors should be considered as proxy measures to detect the high-risk group for smoking initiation.

  • In this paper, we describe a fuzzy threshold selection technique for feature extraction in digital color images. this is achieved by the formulation a fuzzy inference system that evaluates threshold for feature configurations. The system uses two fuzzy measures. They capture desirable characteristics of features such as dependency of local intensity and continuity in an image. We give a graphical description of a nonlinear sketch feature extraction filter and design the fuzzy inference system in terms of the characteristics of the feature. Through the design, we provide selection method on the choice of a threshold to achieve certain characteristics of the extracted features. Experimental results show the usefulness of our fuzzy threshold inference approach which is able to extract features without human intervention.

  • Magnetic properties of electrical steel are, in general. measured by using Epstein frame or single sheet tester (SST). These methods, however, require very strict regulation of a specimen in its size and shape. thus, can not be easily applied to various types of specimen. On the other hand, a ring-test method, which measures only the isotropic properties, can be easily applied to most cases because it requires a toroidal-type specimen of arbitrary size. This method, especially, is considered as an unique available method for a bulk-type specimen. In this paper, a ring-test method is developed, and applied to the measurement of magnetic properties of a bulk-type electrical steel with a toroidal-type specimen. In the measurement, the magnetic properties and iron losses are measured and compared with each other at the both sinusoidal magnetic flux density and sinusoidal magnetic field intensity conditions under 0.2Hz and 60Hz alternating magnetic fields excitation. Through experimental measurements, a sinusoidal magnetic flux density condition is proven appropriate for the measurement of magnetic properties, including iron loss characteristics, of electrical steels.

  • An episode of corona is a heterogeneity-caused electric discharge that occurs when electric fields are formed layer on layer and concentrated on an electrode. Electric wires built at the tip of 154kV private facilities use dead end clamp spawns corona from homogeneity caused by field concentration. Corona induces power loss, noise, insulator failure and more. In this research, we've studied the characteristics of coronas that take place in porcelain insulators and terminal electric wires of supporting hard wares (dead end clamp) that are set up as spares in the 154kV private facilities use hydroelectricity installations to support electric wires. Corona, which cannot be identified by regular methods, was measured utilizing UV image camera. As the result of measuring corona via UV image camera, we've confirmed that the depletion of insulators was accelerated following the wire end treatment method and validated the stress intensity of insulators at various lengths of bare wires caused by electric fields via FEMLAB. We have also proposed a new model for relieving homogeneity-caused field concentration, and after analyzing the proposed model via FEMLAB, we've confirmed that the concentration of field distribution was indeed reduced. Such results are exploited in installation of private facilities use equipments, maintenance of insulators and hard wares as well as safety enhancement, and are anticipated to be effectively utilized in corona prevention measures.

  • Each year, it seems inevitable that major accidents will occur on construction sites. Industrial accidents, sometimes involving foreign laborers, have been constantly increasing. Construction laborers have higher hazard rates and higher work intensity than other industries, which means that they experience more job stress, as a result of the subcontracting structure. Therefore, this study performed an influence factor analysis on job stress and its relevance to industrial accidents involving Korean and foreign construction laborers, and proposed its effectiveness with the job stress and construction accident management measures based on the results of those. A questionnaire to measure job stress was performed targeting Korean and foreign laborers, and the results were analyzed. The results of this study can be utilized as important reference materials in efforts to reduce the job stress of foreign laborers on construction sites, and can be expected to contribute to preventing construction accidents related to job stress in the future.

  • As agricultural machinery has become larger and tillage practices have changed in recent decades, compaction as a result of wheel traffic and tillage has caused increasing concern. If strategies to manage compaction, such as deep tillage, could be applied only where needed, economic and environmental benefits would result. For such site-specific compaction management to occur, compacted areas within fields must be efficiently sensed and mapped. We previously developed an on-the-go soil strength profile sensor (SSPS) for this purpose. The SSPS measures within-field variability in soil strength at five soil depths up to 50 cm. Determining the variability structure of SSPS data is needed for site-specific field management since the variability structure determines the required intensity of data collection and is related to the delineation of compaction management zones. In this paper, soil bin data were analyzed by a spectral analysis technique to determine the variability structure of the SSPS data, and to investigate causes and implications of this variability. In the soil bin, we observed a repeating pattern due to soil fracture with an approximate 12- to 19-cm period, especially at the 10-cm depth, possibly due to cyclic development of soil fracture on this interval. These findings will facilitate interpretation of soil strength data and enhance application of the SSPS.

  • Dental implants using titanium have greatly advanced through the improvement of designs and surface treatments. Nonetheless, the anatomical limits and physiological changes of the patient are still regarded as obstacles in increasing the success rate of implants further, even with the enhancement of implant products. So there have been many efforts to overcome these limits. The intrinsic potential for bone regeneration can be stimulated through adjuvant treatments with the continuous improvement of implant properties, and this can play an important role in achieving optimum osseointegration toward peripheral bone tissue and securing ultimate long-term implant stability in standard surgical procedures. For this purpose, various chemical, biological, or biophysical measures were developed such as bone grafts, materials, pharmacological agents, growth factors, and bone formation proteins. The biophysical stimulation of bone union includes non-invasive and safe methods. In the beginning, it was developed as a method to enhance the healing of fractures, but later evolved into Pulsed Electromagnetic Field, Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound, and Low-Level Laser Therapy. Their beneficial effects were confirmed in many studies. This study sought to examine bone-implant union and its latest trend as well as the biophysical stimulation method to enhance the union. In particular, this study suggested the enhancement of the function of cells and tissues under a disadvantageous bone metabolism environment through such adjunctive stimulation. This study is expected to serve as a treatment guideline for implant-bone union under unfavorable circumstances caused by systemic diseases hampering bone metabolism or the host environment.
