  • Background: To improve muscle flexibility, static stretch is the most common type and is considered safe and effective for improving overall flexibility of muscles. During the stretch, the intensity is more likely to be determined by the degree of an athlete's pain and practitioner's skills rather than quantitative measures of stretch. It is necessary to determine the optimal intensity for the stretch. Objects: The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between hand held dynamometer (HHD) and verbal rating scale (VRS) in comparison of the effects of continuance time on active (walking) and inactive (sitting) movement after static stretch. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample (n=62) recruited from a university. Participants were randomly assigned to 2 different groups (n=31 for each group) based on participants' positions either remaining in sitting or freely walking around for a series of re-assessments. Data was collected at pre-warm up, pre-stretch, post-stretch, and additional assessments at the time of 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 20 and 30 minutes after the stretch. Results: Relationship between VRS and HHD scores represents very weak correlation (Spearman's p=-.16, p>.05). Pearson's correlation analysis was conducted following the logarithmic transformation of the two scores. Pearson's correlation after the transformation still showed a very low relationship and a poor linear relationship between the two scores (Pearson's r=-.18, p>.05). Conclusion: The optimal intensity for stretch cannot be solely determined by the subjective pain perception. The objective measurement such as HHD could be used in conjunction with the pain perception.

  • PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify the effects of joint mobilization intervention combined with exercise on range of motion (ROM), pain intensity, and functional performance in adolescent baseball players with internal impingement syndrome of the shoulder. METHODS: The subjects were 30 adolescent baseball players diagnosed with internal impingement. Ten subjects were randomly assigned to each of 3 groups: Group 1 (exercise only), Group 2 (joint mobilization combined with exercise), and Group 3 (rest-only control group). Three weekly interventions were given for 4 weeks (the control group rested for 4 weeks). The main outcome measures were goniometer, visual analogue scale (VAS), and Korean Kerlan Jobe shoulder-elbow (K-KJOC) scores. The ROM (external and internal rotation), pain intensity (at the moment of throwing), and functional performance were compared among the groups. RESULTS: No significant difference was observed among the groups in the range of external rotation of the shoulder before and after the intervention, but the range of internal rotation was significantly increased in Group 2 compared to Groups 1 and 3. Pain intensity was significantly lower in Group 2 than in Group 1 and 3, and functional performance was significantly increased in Group 2 compared to Group 1 and 3. CONCLUSION: An intervention that combined joint mobilization with exercise was more effective than resting or exercise alone for rapid recovery from sports injury and improvement in athletic performance.

  • Recent studies focus on the role of investor attention and transparency in stock-related information in explaining stock return and trading volume. Moreover, recent literatures predict that firm opacity will increase the likelihood of future stock price crashes. In this paper, we investigate, using Naver Trend, the relation between portal search intensity and stock price crash. Using various alternative measures of stock price crash risk and search intensity, we demonstrate that stocks with larger volume of portal search are less likely to experience stock price crashes. These results are consistent with our hypothesis that accumulated firm opacity cause future stock price crash. Finally, our results still hold even after we control for the potential effect of endogeneity in the regression specifications.

  • Climate change affects human and natural environment. Many countries, including Korea, are trying to develop climate change adaptation strategies to minimize adverse impacts of climate change. To deal with climate change efficiently, decisions have to be made among many options. The objectives of this paper is to analyzes methodologies for prioritizing climate change adaptation measures. Each methodology has strength and weakness and information requirements are differ. We find multi-criteria analysis is one of useful tools considering current level of understanding on climate change adaptation. We suggest climate change risks(timing, likelihood, intensity of climate change impacts), feasibility of policy (equity, main-streaming, democracy), effectiveness (economic effectiveness, co-benefits, propagation effects) of adaptation measures as main evaluation criteria of prioritization.

  • Regulations on greenhouse gases emitted from ships in international shipping are being strengthened, and the greenhouse gas reduction target established by the International Maritime Organization is acting as a great challenge for shipping companies in terms of technical and operational aspects. The International Maritime Organization aims to reduce carbon intensity by 30% by 2030, 70% by 2050, and by 50% in terms of gross emissions compared to 2008. To realize this situation, the IMO adopted some short-term and mid-to-long-term measures and adopted technical measures such as the application of EEXI, an energy efficiency index, to existing ships from 2023, and the early application of EEDI phase 3 for some tpe of ships. In addition, reduction measures were introduced to reduce greenhouse gas in the operational aspect.

  • In this paper, we presents a signatures verification by using the nonlinear quantization histogram of polar coordinate based on multi-dimensional adjacent pixel intensity difference. The multi-dimensional adjacent pixel intensity difference is calculated from an intensity difference between a pair of pixels in a horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and opposite diagonal directions centering around the reference pixel. The polar coordinate is converted from the rectangular coordinate by making a pair of horizontal and vertical difference, and diagonal and opposite diagonal difference, respectively. The nonlinear quantization histogram is also calculated from nonuniformly quantizing the polar coordinate value by using the Lloyd algorithm, which is the recursive method. The polar coordinate histogram of 4-directional intensity difference is applied not only for more considering the corelation between pixels but also for reducing the calculation load by decreasing the number of histogram. The nonlinear quantization is also applied not only to still more reflect an attribute of intensity variations between pixels but also to obtain the low level histogram. The proposed method has been applied to verified 90(3 persons * 30 signatures/person) images of 256*256 pixels based on a matching measures of city-block, Euclidean, ordinal value, and normalized cross-correlation coefficient. The experimental results show that the proposed method has a superior to the linear quantization histogram, and Euclidean distance is also the optimal matching measure.

  • The prevalence and intensity of Opisthorchis viverrini metacercariae (OvMc) were investigated in fish from 3 southern administrative regions along the Mekong River in Cambodia, i.e., Phnom Penh, Takeo, and Kandal Provinces from 2017 to 2020. A total of 295 freshwater fish (24 species) were transported to our laboratory with ice and examined using the artificial digestion method. In Phnom Penh, among 4 fish species positive for OvMc, 9 (23.7%) of 38 specimens examined were infected, and their intensity of infection averaged 4.3 metacercariae per infected fish. In Takeo Province, among 10 fish species positive for OvMc, 24 (38.1%) out of 63 fish examined were infected, and their intensity of infection was av. 14.4 metacercariae per infected fish. In particular, all of 3 Osteochilus schlegelii fish examined were infected, and their infection intensity was high, 34.7 metacercariae per fish. In Kandal Province, among 6 fish species positive for OvMc, 46 (90.2%) out of 51 specimens examined were infected, and their infection intensity was 24.0 metacercaraie per infected fish. All fish of Systomus orphoides (n=17), Barbonymus altus (n=14), and Rasbora aurotaenia (n=2) were infected, and their intensity of infection averaged 37.7, 21.6, and 18.5 metacercariae per fish, respectively. Metacercariae of Haplochis yokogawai, Haplorchis taichui, and Centrocestus formosanus were detected in fish from Takeo and Kandal Provinces. From these results, it has been confirmed that a variety of fish species from Phnom Penh, Takeo, and Kandal Provinces are commonly infected with OvMc, and preventive measures to avoid human O. viverrini infection should be performed in Cambodia.

  • This paper proposes a method that automatically extracts characteristics of cracks such as length, thickness and direction, etc., from a concrete surface image with image processing techniques. This paper, first, uses the closing morphologic operation to adjust the effect of light extending over the whole concrete surface image. After applying the high-pass filtering operation to sharpen boundaries of cracks, we classify intensity values of the image into 8 groups and remove intensity values belong to the highest frequency group among them for the removal of background. Then, we binarize the preprocessed image. The auxiliary lines used to measure cracks of concrete surface are removed from the binarized image with position information extracted by the histogram operation. Then, cracks broken by the removal of background are extended to reconstruct an original crack with the $5{\times}5$ masking operation. We remove unnecessary information by applying three types of noise removal operations successively and extracts areas of cracks from the binarized image. At last, the opening morphologic operation is applied to compensate extracted cracks and characteristics of cracks are measured on the compensated ones. Experiments using real images of concrete surface showed that the proposed method extracts cracks well and precisely measures characteristics of cracks.

  • In civil engineering, probabilistic seismic risk assessment is used to predict the economic damage to a lifeline system of possible future earthquakes. The results are used to plan mitigation measures and to strengthen the structures where necessary. Instead, after an earthquake public authorities need mathematical models that compute: the damage caused by the earthquake to the individual vulnerable components and links, and the global behavior of the lifeline system. In this study, a framework that was developed and used for prediction purpose is modified to assess the consequences of an earthquake in quasi real-time after such earthquake happened. This is possible because nowadays entire seismic regions are instrumented with tight networks of strong motion stations, which provide and broadcast accurate intensity measure maps of the event to the public within minutes. The framework uses the broadcasted map and calculates the damage to the lifeline system and its component in quasi real-time. The results give the authorities the most likely status of the system. This helps emergency personnel to deal with the damage and to prioritize visual inspections and repairs. A highway transportation network is used as a test bed but any lifeline system can be analyzed.

  • In-situ measurements are labor-intensive, time-consuming, and limited in their ability to observe currents with spatial variations in the surf zone. This paper proposes an optical image-based method of measurement of currents in the surf zone. This method measures nearshore currents by tracking in time wave breaking-induced foam patches from sequential images. Foam patches in images tend to be arrayed with irregular pixel intensity values, which are likely to remain consistent for a short period of time. This irregular intensity feature of a foam patch is characterized and represented as a keypoint using an image-based object recognition method, i.e., Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT). The keypoints identified by the SIFT method are traced from time sequential images to produce instantaneous velocity fields. In order to remove erroneous velocities, the instantaneous velocity fields are filtered by binding them within upper and lower limits, and averaging the velocity data in time and space with a certain interval. The measurements that are obtained by this method are comparable to the results estimated by an existing image-based method of observing currents, named the Optical Current Meter (OCM).
