  • Due to the higher ratio of live load to total loads of railway bridges, the accumulated damage by cyclic fatigue is significant. Moreover, it is highly possible that the initiated crack grows faster than that of highway bridges. Therefore, it is strongly needed to assess the safety for the accumulated damage analytically. The initiation and growth of fatigue-crack are related with the stress range, number of cycles, and the stiffness of the structural system. The stiffness of the structural system includes uncertainties of the planning, design, construction and maintenance, which varies as time goes. In this study, the authors developed the design and risk assessment techniques based on the reliability theories considering the uncertainties in load and resistance. For the probabilistic risk assessment of crack growth and the remaining life of the structures by the cyclic load of railway and subway bridges, response surface method (RSM) combined with first order second moment method were used. For composing limit state function, the stress range, stress intensity factor and the remaining life were selected as input important random variables to the RSM program. The probabilities of failure and the reliability indices of fatigue life for the considered specimen under cyclic loads were evaluated and discussed.

  • Separation and determinations of Co(II) and Ni(II) ions as their 4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol(PAR) chelates by reversed-phase capillary high-performance liquid chromatography(RP-CpHPLC) were performed. Among many capillary columns, Vydac C4 column was selected and acetonitrile solution was used as mobile phase. The effect of pH and MeCN concentration(%) on the retention factor, k and peak intensity was examined and discussed. As a results, it was found that 22.5% MeCN and pH 5.60 was adequate as mobile phase for the separation of the two metal ions and determination of Co(II) ion, but the mobile phase condition for Ni(II) ion determination was 22.5% MeCN of pH 7.20. Detection limit(D.L., S/N=3) of Co(II) and Ni(II) ions were $2.0{\times}10{-7}$ M(14.9 ppb) and $1.0{\times}10{-6}$ M(59.2 ppb), respectively.

  • This study introduces a technique for improving the elastomeric-isolator performance using modular devices. The modular devices are shear resistance block, polymer spring, displacement acceptance guide, and anti-falling block. They are installed on the elastomeric isolator as a supplementary device. Each modularized device improves the isolator performance by performing step-by-step actions according to the seismic intensity and displacement. The PRB isolation device works in four stages, depending on the seismic magnitude, to satisfy the target performance. It is designed to accommodate design displacement in the first stage and large magnitude of earthquakes in the second and third stages. This design prevents superstructures from falling in the fourth stage due to large-magnitude earthquakes by increasing the capacity limit of the elastomeric isolator. In this study, the PRB isolation device is analyzed using finite element analysis to verify that the PRB isolation device works as intended and it can withstand loads corresponding to large-magnitude earthquakes. The performance of the PRB isolation device is validated by the analysis, which is further corroborated by actual experiments.

  • Nickel oxide was doped with a wide range of concentrations (mol%) of Aluminum (Al) by solvothermal synthesis; single-phased nano powder of nickel oxide was generated after calcination at$900^{\circ}C$. When the concentration of Al dopant was increased, the reduced intensity was confirmed through XRD analysis. Lattice parameters of the synthesized NiO powder were decreased after treatment of the dopant; parameters were increased when the concentration of Al was over the doping limit (5 mol% Al). The binding energy of $Ni^{2+}$ was chemically shifted to $Ni^{3+}$ by doping $Al^{3+}$ ion, as confirmed by the XPS analysis. The tilted structure of the synthesized NiO with 5 mol% Al dopant and the polycrystalline structure of the $Ni_{0.75}Al_{0.25}O$ were observed by HR-TEM analysis. The electrical conductivity of the newly synthesized NiO was highly improved by Al doping in the conductivity test. The electrical conductivity values of the commercial NiO and the synthesized NiO with 5 mol% Al dopant ($Ni_{0.95}Al_{0.05}O$) were 1,400 s/cm and 2,230 s/cm at $750^{\circ}C$, respectively. However, the electrical conductivity of the synthesized NiO with 10 mol% Al dopant ($Ni_{0.9}Al_{0.1}O$) decreased due to the scattering of free-electrons caused by the large number of impurity atoms; the electrical conductivity of $Ni_{0.9}Al_{0.1}O$ was 545 s/cm at $750^{\circ}C$.

  • Biodegradation of the C. I. Reactive Blue 114 was investigated in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. Important parameters studied include dye concentration, the kind and concentration of carbon source, hydraulic retention time (HRT), and influent pH. Glucose was found to be a better co-substrate than the mixture of volatile fatty acids (VFAs), although its concentration did not affect dye removal efficiency in the range of $1000{\sim}3000mg/{\ell}$. When HRT increased from 6 hr to 24 hr, dye removal efficiency increased up to 12 hr and remained almost constant thereafter at about 40%. When influent pH was varied in the range of 6.0~8.0, the effluent pH was varied in the range of 6.8~7.5 with maximum efficiency at pH 7.0. The highest dye removal rate obtained was $52mg/{\ell}{\cdot}day$, while the maximum dye load to meet the discharge limit of color intensity was estimated to be $46mg/{\ell}{\cdot}day$ at HRT of 12 hr and an influent glucose concentration of $2200mg/{\ell}$.

  • A new analytical luminescence method for the Eu+3 and Tb+3 ions was studied using the luminescence enhancement by the treatment of the o-phenanthroline on the nylon membrane. Compared to the specific emission intensities of the ions in aqueous(or ethanol) solution, if the aqueous ion is spotted on the nylon membrane, the luminescence intensities were extremely enhanced. There was additional enhancement effect of the luminescence intensities of the ions on the nylon membrane, if the ion on the nylon membrane is treated with o-phenanthroline. Based on the luminescence enhancement, the detection limits were lowered by more than 7 order of magnitude compared to that of solution sample, and also lowered by about 1 order of magnitude compared to that of previous TLC method. The dynamic ranges and correlation coefficients of the calibration curves near the detection limit were 2∼3 order and ∼0.99, respectively. It was also shown that the luminescence intensity was in its maximum when the ion on the nylon is treated with ∼4 mole ratio of o-phenanthroline. The energy-transfer mechanism was explained for the theoretical background of the luminescence enhancement.

  • The geological factors for causing ground subsidence are very diverse. It can be affected by any geological or extrinsic influences, and even within the same geological factor, the soil depression impact factor can be determined by different physical properties. As a result of reviewing a large number of papers and case histories, it can be seen that there are seven categories of ground subsidence factors. The depth and thickness of the overburden can affect the subsidence depending on the existence of the cavity, whereas the depth and orientation of the boundary between soil and rock are dominant factors in the ground composed of soil and rock. In case of soil layers, more various influencing factors exist such as type of soil, shear strength, relative density and degree of compaction, dry unit weight, water content, and liquid limit. The type of rock, distance from the main fracture and RQD can be influential factors in the bedrock. When approaching from the hydrogeological point of view, the rainfall intensity, the distance and the depth from the main channel, the coefficient of permeability and fluctuation of ground water level can influence to ground subsidence. It is also possible that the ground subsidence can be affected by external factors such as the depth of excavation and distance from the earth retaining wall, groundwater treatment methods at excavation work, and existence of artificial facilities such as sewer pipes. It is estimated that to evaluate the ground subsidence factor during the construction of underground structures in urban areas will be essential. It is expected that ground subsidence factors examined in this study will contribute for the reliable evaluation of the ground subsidence risk.

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are an important public health problem throughout the world. Many important questions remain to be addressed in assessing exposure to these compounds. Because they are ubiquitous and highly volatile, special techniques must be applied in the analytical determination of VOCs. Personal exposure measurements are needed to evaluate the relationship between microenvironmental concentrations and actual exposures. It is also important to investigate exposure frequency, duration, and intensity, as well as personal exposure characteristics. In addition to air monitoring, biological monitoring may contribute significantly to risk assessment by allowing estimation of absorbed doses, rather than just the external exposure concentrations, which are evaluated by environmental and personal monitoring. This study was conducted to establish the analytic procedure of VOCs in air, blood, urine and exhaled breath and to evaluate the relationships among these environmental media. The subjects of this study were selected because they are occupationally exposed to high levels of VOCs. Environmental, personal, blood, urine and exhalation samples were collected. Purge & trap, thermal desorber, gas chromatography and mass selective detector were used to analyze the collected samples. Analytical procedures were validated with the“break through test”, 'quot;recovery test for storage and transportation”,“method detection limit test”and“inter-laboratory QA/QC study”. Assessment of halogenated compounds indicted that they were significantly correlated to each other (p value < 0.01). In a similar manner, aromatic compounds were also correlated, except in urine sample. Linear regression was used to evaluate the relationships between personal exposures and environmental concentrations. These relationships for aromatic and halogenated are as follows: Halogen $s_{personal}$ = 3.875+0.068Halogen $s_{environmet}$, ($R^2$= .930) Aromatic $s_{personal}$ = 34217.757-31.266Aromatic $s_{environmet}$, ($R^2$= .821) Multiple regression was used to evaluate the relationship between exposures and various exposure deter-minants including, gender, duration of employment, and smoking history. The results of the regression model-ins for halogens in blood and aromatics in urine are as follows: Halogen $s_{blood}$ = 8.181+0.246Halogen $s_{personal}$+3.975Gender ($R^2$= .925), Aromatic $s_{urine}$ = 249.565+0.135Aromatic $s_{personal}$ -5.651 D.S ($R^2$ = .735), In conclusion, we have established analytic procedures for VOC measurement in biological and environmental samples and have presented data demonstrating relationships between VOCs levels in biological media and environmental samples. • In this paper, in order to support the peak current limiting function depending on the intensity of the fault current at the early stage of failure, a two magnetically coupled type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is proposed, which includes high-Tc superconducting (HTSC) element 1, where the existing primary and secondary coils are connected to one iron core in parallel, and HTSC element 2, which is connected to the tertiary winding using an additional iron core. The results of the experiments in this study confirmed that the two magnetic coupling type SFCL having coil 1 and coil 2 connected in parallel using dual iron cores is capable of having only HTSC element 1 support the burden of the peak current when a failure occurs. The reason for this is that although HTSC element 1 was quenched and malfunctioned because the instantaneous factor of the initial fault current was large, the current flowing to coil 3 did not exceed the critical current, which would otherwise cause HTSC element 2 to be quenched and not function. In order to limit the peak current upon fault through the sequential HTSC elements, the design should allow it to have the same value as the low value of coil 1 while having coil 3 possess a higher self-inductance value than coil 2. In addition, a short-circuit simulation experiment was conducted to examine and validate the current limiting and recovery characteristics of the SFCL when the winding ratio between coil 1 and coil 2 was 0.25. Through the analysis of the short-circuit tests, the current limiting and recovery characteristics in the case of the additive polarity winding was confirmed to be superior to that of the subtractive polarity winding.

  • The increased demand on the transport of both passengers and goods through rail systems implies higher traffic intensity and congestion on the railways, resulting in greater likelihood of accidents and also degraded passenger services. To cope with the issues, development of an integrated communication network for rails has attracted great deal of attention lately. GSM-R is such an example developed in Europe, which seems to have restrictions in providing various communication services due to network speed limit. For the reason, an LTE-based approach is under study in Korea. After the network development, operation management of the network is necessary. Design of operation management systems has been studied little and thus is the objective of this paper. To do so, a conceptual design has been carried out based on model-based approach. Specifically, a context model has first been created using the use case diagram. Then, SysML models of operational scenarios were developed for the management system. The SysML models have alternatively been expressed as EFFBD models to simulate and verify them. Consequently, the result of the conceptual system design for the operation management of the integrated wireless network is expected to be used as a basis for the detailed design later.
