Present article deals with the static stability analysis of compositionally graded nanocomposite beams reinforced with graphene oxide powder (GOP) is undertaken once the beam is subjected to an induced force caused by nonuniform magnetic field. The homogenized material properties of the constituent material are approximated through Halpin-Tsai micromechanical scheme. Three distribution types of GOPs are considered, namely uniform, X and O. Also, a higher-order refined beam model is incorporated with the dynamic form of the virtual work's principle to derive the partial differential motion equations of the problem. The governing equations are solved via Galerkin's method. The introduced mathematical model is numerically validated presenting a comparison between the results of present work with responses obtained from previous articles. New results for the buckling load of GOP reinforced nanocomposites are presented regarding for different values of magnetic field intensity. Besides, other investigations are performed to show the impacts of other variants, such as slenderness ratio, boundary condition, distribution type and so on, on the critical stability limit of beams made from nanocomposites.

This paper presents fracture mechanics analysis results for various cracks located at pressurized water reactor pressure vessel nozzle crotch corners taking into consideration constraint effect. Technical documents such as the ASME B&PV Code, Sec.XI were reviewed and then a fracture mechanics analysis procedure was proposed for structural integrity assessment of various nozzle crotch corner cracks under normal operation conditions considering the constraint effect. Linear elastic fracture mechanics analysis was performed by conducting finite element analysis with the proposed analysis procedure. Based on the evaluation results, elastic-plastic fracture mechanics analysis taking into account the constraint effect was performed only for the axial surface crack of the reactor pressure vessel outlet nozzle with cladding. The fracture mechanics analysis result shows that only the axial surface crack in the reactor pressure vessel outlet nozzle has the stress intensity factor exceeding the low bound of upper-shelf fracture toughness irrespectively of considering the constraint effect. It is confirmed that the J-integral for the axial crack of the outlet nozzle does not exceed the ductile crack initiation toughness. Hence, it can be ensured that the structural integrity of all the cracks is maintained during the normal operation.

In this study, the harmless crack size(ahml) according to the residual stress depth was evaluated using the fatigue limit of SCM440 steel by quenching-tempering(QT) and induction hardening(IH), and threshold stress intensity factor of QT steel. Because the residual stress increased rapidly as the crack depth increased, ahml was determined at the depth of all the crack aspect ratio(As) regardless of Type I-III, and ahml also increased according to the residual stress depth. ahml was minimal at As=1.0 and maximal at As=0.1, but was almost similar on each Type. ahml was small the dependence on As.
During the formation of large-scale structures in the universe, shocks with the sonic Mach number Ms <~ 5 are naturally induced by supersonic flow motions of baryonic matter in the intracluster medium (ICM). Cosmic rays (CRs) are expected to be accelerated via diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) at these ICM shocks, although the existence of CR protons in the ICM remains to be confirmed through gamma-ray observations. Based on the results obtained from kinetic plasma simulations, we build an analytic DSA model for weak, quasi-parallel shocks in the test-particle regime. With our DSA model, the CR acceleration efficiency ranges ~ 0.001 - 0.02 in supercritical quasi-parallel shocks with sonic Mach number Ms ~ 2.25 - 5, and the acceleration would be negligible in subcritical shocks wth Ms <~ 2.25. Adopting our DSA model, we estimate gamma-ray and neutrino emissions from clusters of galaxies by performing cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. The estimated gamma-ray flux is below the Fermi-LAT upper limit. In addition, the possible neutrino emission due to the decay of charged pions in galaxy clusters would be about <~ 1% of the atmospheric neutrino intensity in the energy range of <~ 100 GeV. In this talk, we will discuss the implication of our results.

This study evaluates the seismic fragilities in fill slopes in South Korea through parametric finite element analyses that have been barely investigated thus far. We consider three slope geometries for a slope of height 10 m and three slope angles, and two soil types, namely frictional and frictionless, associated with two soil states, loose and dense for frictional soils and soft and stiff for frictionless soils. The input ground motions accounting for four site conditions in South Korea are obtained from one-dimensional site response analyses. By comparing the numerical modeling of slopes using PLAXIS2D against the previous studies, we compiled suites of the maximum permanent slope displacement (Dmax) against two ground motion parameters, namely, peak ground acceleration (PGA) and Arias Intensity (IA). A probabilistic seismic demand model is adopted to compute the probabilities of exceeding three limit states (minor, moderate, and extensive). We propose multiple seismic fragility curves as functions of a single ground motion parameter and numerous seismic fragility surfaces as functions of two ground motion parameters. The results show that soil type, slope angle, and input ground motion influence these probabilities, and are expected to help regional authorities and engineers assess the seismic fragility of fill slopes in the road systems in South Korea.

Surfactant enhanced fluorescence (FL) of europium-salicylic acid (SA) complex has been studied. It was observed that weak FL of Eu(III) at the wavelength of 589 nm and 612 nm was found to be enhanced after addition of salicylic acid and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant upon excitation at 395 nm. Under optimized condition, FL intensity of Eu(III) at 612 nm responded linearly with the concentration of SA in the range of 5.5×10-9 to 1.5×10-6 M of SA. The detection limit was calculated from the calibration curve(3Sb/m) as 9.27×10-9 M.
Riverine flood is one of the critical natural threats to river-crossing bridges. As floods are the most-occurred natural hazard worldwide, survival probability of bridges due to floods must be assessed in a speedy but precise manner. In this regard, the paper presents a reliability-based approach for a rapid assessment of failure probability of vulnerable bridge components under floods. This robust method is generic in nature and can be applied to both concrete and steel girder bridges. The developed methodology essentially utilizes limit state performance functions, expressed in terms of capacity and flood demand, for probable failure modes of various vulnerable components of bridges. Advanced First Order Reliability Method (AFORM), Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS), and Latin Hypercube Simulation (LHS) techniques are applied for the purpose of reliability assessment and developing flood fragility curves of bridges in which flow velocity and water height are taken as flood intensity measures. Upon validating the proposed method, it is applied to a case study bridge that experiences the flood scenario of a river in Gujarat, India. Research outcome portrays how effectively and efficiently the proposed reliability-based method can be applied for a quick assessment of flood vulnerability of bridges in any flood-prone region of interest.
Research on interfacial crack formation in orthotropic bi-materials has experienced a notable increase in recent years, driven by growing concerns about structural integrity and reliability. The existence of a crack at the interface of bi-materials has a substantial impact on mechanical strength and can ultimately lead to fracture. The primary objective of this article is to introduce a comprehensive analytical model and establish stress relationships for investigating interfacial crack between two non-identical orthotropic materials with desired crack-fiber angles. In this paper, we present the application of the Interfacial Maximum Tangential Stress (IMTS) criterion, in combination with the Reinforcement Isotropic Solid (RIS) model, to investigate the behavior of interfacial cracks in orthotropic bi-materials under mixed-mode I/II loading conditions. We analytically characterize the stress state at the interfacial crack tip using both Stress Intensity Factors (SIFs) and the T-stress term. Orthotropic materials, due to their anisotropic nature, can exhibit complex crack tip stress fields, making it challenging to predict crack initiation behavior. The secondary objective of this study is to employ the IMTS criterion to predict the crack initiation angle and explore the notable impact of the T-stress term on fracture behavior. Furthermore, we validate the effectiveness of our approach in evaluating Fracture Limit Curves (FLCs) for interfacial cracks in orthotropic bi-materials by comparing our FLCs with relevant experimental data from existing literature.
In this study, a fluorescent ethanol sensor is developed to determine the ethanol concentration in the liquid phase. The sensor is developed using a complex of resazurin (RA)/resorufin (RO) and a hydrotalcite (HT) catalyst in a sol-gel matrix of methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) to produce a fluorescent ethanol-sensing membrane (RA/RO*HT membrane). The operation mechanism of the RA/RO*HT membrane is based on (i) the oxidation of ethanol to acetaldehyde and (ii) the reduction of RA to RO, through electron flows followed by EtOH ↔ HT ↔ RA/RO ↔ EtOH interactions. These possible redox reactions can lead to an increased fluorescence intensity of the RA/RO*HT membrane as the ethanol concentration increases. The RA/RO*HT membrane shows a linear detection range of 1-20 vol.% EtOH with limit of detection (LOD) of 0.178%. Additionally, the RA/RO*HT membrane has high sensitivity and accuracy for determining the alcohol content in several Korean alcoholic beverages.
The accurate and rapid detection of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) holds significant clinical importance. This work presents a new method for detecting methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in clinical samples. The method uses an aptamer-based colorimetric assay that combines a recognizing probe to identify the target and split DNAzyme to amplify the signal, resulting in a highly sensitive and direct analysis of methicillin-resistance. The identification of the PBP2a protein on the membrane of S. aureus in clinical samples leads to the allosterism of the recognizing probe, and thus provides a template for the proximity ligation of split DNAzyme. The proximity ligation of split DNAzyme forms an intact DNAzyme to identify the loop section in the L probe and generates a nicking site to release the loop sequence ("3" and "4" fragments). The "3" and "4" fragments forms an intact sequence to induce the catalytic hairpin assembly, exposing the G-rich section. The released the G-rich sequence of LR probe induces the formation of G-quadruplex-hemin DNAzyme as a colorimetric signal readout. The absorption intensity demonstrated a strong linear association with the logarithm of the S. aureus concentration across a wide range of 5 orders of magnitude dynamic range under the optimized experimental parameters. The limit of detection was calculated to be 23 CFU/ml and the method showed high selectivity for MRSA.
