Objectives: Patient dose verification is clinically the most important parts in the treatment delivery of radiation therapy. The three dimensional(3D) reconstruction of dose distribution delivered to target volume helps to verify patient dose and determine the physical characteristics of beams used in intensity modulated radiation therapy(IMRT). We present Beam Intensity Scanner(BInS) system for the pre treatment dosimetric verification of two dimensional photon intensity. The BInS is a radiation detector with a custom made software for relative dose conversion of fluorescence signals from scintillator. Methods: This scintillator is fabricated by phosphor Gadolinium Oxysulphide and is used to produce fluorescence from the irradiation of 6MV photons on a Varian Clinac 21EX. The digitized fluoroscopic signals obtained by digital video camera will be processed by our custom made software to reproduce 3D relative dose distribution. For the intensity modulated beam(IMB), the BInS calculates absorbed dose in absolute beam fluence, which are used for the patient dose distribution. Results: Using BInS, we performed various measurements related to IMRT and found the followings: (1) The 3D dose profiles of the IMBs measured by the BInS demonstrate good agreement with radiographic film, pin type ionization chamber and Monte Carlo simulation. (2) The delivered beam intensity is altered by the mechanical and dosimetric properties of the collimating of dynamic and/or static MLC system. This is mostly due to leaf transmission, leaf penumbra, scattered photons from the round edges of leaves, and geometry of leaf. (3) The delivered dose depends on the operational detail of how to make multileaf opening. Conclusions: These phenomena result in a fluence distribution that can be substantially different from the initial and calculative intensity modulation and therefore, should be taken into account by the treatment planing for accurate dose calculations delivered to the target volume in IMRT.

In this paper, we numerically investigated the optimum pump light power best compensating for pulse distortion due to both chromatic dispersion and self phase modulation (SPM) as a function of channel input power in 8 channel ${\times}$ 40 Gbps wavelength division multiplexing (WDM systems. Also we investigated the allowable maximum channel input power dependence on modulation format and fiber dispersion coefficient in the various pump light power of OPC. The considered WDM transmission system is based on path-averaged intensity approximation (PAIA) mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) compensation method, which has highly-nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber (HNL-SDF) as nonlinear medium of optical phase conjugator (OPC) in the mid-way of total transmission line. We confirmed that optimal pump light power of HNL-DSF OPC depend on modulation format, initial channel input power, total transmission length and fiber dispersion. But optimal pump light power of HNL-DSF OPC must be selected to make power conversion ratio to almost unity. And we confirmed that, if we allow a 1 dB eye opening penalty (EOP), the tolerable maximum channel input power is increased by using RZ than NRZ as modulation format when pump light power of HNL-DSF OPC is not optimal value but another values.
Muons and neutrons are representative secondary particles that are generated by interactions between primary cosmic ray particles (mostly protons) and the nuclei of atmospheric gas compounds. Previous studies reported that muons experience seasonal variations because of the meteorological effects of temperature. The intensity of neutrons has a typical modulation with various periods and reasons, such as diurnal and solar variation or transient events. This paper reports that cosmic ray particles, which were observed by neutron monitors, have seasonal variations using the daily data at the Oulu neutron monitor. To eliminate the effects of solar activity across time, the daily data were normalized by two different transformations: transformations with respect to the grand mean and yearly mean. The data after transformation with respect to the yearly mean showed more statistical stability and clear seasonal variations. On the other hand, it is difficult to determine if the seasonal variation results from terrestrial effects, such as meteorological factors, or extraterrestrial effects, such as the position of the Earth in its orbit of revolution.
The relative intensity noise (RIN) characteristics in 405 nm blue laser diodes grown on wurtzite AlGaInN multiple quantum well structures were investigated using the rate equations with the quantum Langevin noise model. The device parameters were extracted from the optical gain properties of the MQW active region using the self-consistent numerical method developed for calculating the multiband Hamiltonian in the strained wurtzite crystal. These methods have been applied to laser diodes for various conditions including the external feedback and the high frequency current injection.

In the nonlinear dynamic structural analysis, the given ground excitation as an input should be well defined. Because of the lack of recorded accelerograms in Korea, it is required to generate an artificial earthquake by a stochastic model of ground excitation with various dynamic properties rather than recorded accelerograms. It is well known that earthquake motions are generally non-stationary with time-varying intensity and frequency content. Many researchers have proposed non-stationary random process models. Yeh and Wen (1990) proposed a non-stationary stochastic process model which can be modeled as components with an intensity function, a frequency modulation function and a power spectral density function to describe such non-stationary characteristics. This paper shows the process to generate nonstationary artificial earthquake ground motions considering target design response spectrum chosen by ATC14.

Fabrication and pakaging method for low delve voltage and 10Gbps Ti diffused waveguide LiNbO$_3$ optical intensity modulator are described. Optical waveguides were prepared by conventionaly electron-beam evaporation and Ti-indiffusion into Z-cut plate LiNbO$_3$. Traveling-wave electrodes were used for obtaining the wideband frequency response and impedance matching. Microwave effective index and characteristic impedance measured by time domain reflectometry and compared with the calculated value by conformal mapping. The characteristics of 10Gbps modulator at the 1550nm wavelength are as follows : perfect modulation voltage Is about 5V, optical insertion loss Is about 5dB, 3-dB bandwidth is 10GHz, and characteristic impedance is about 50$\Omega$.
In this paper, we introduce modified parity coding methods to reduce the errors caused by spatial beam intensity variations in a holographic data storage system. We explained the encoding and decoding process of the conventional parity coding and the modified parity coding techniques. We compared the bit-error-rate (BER) performances of the conventional parity coding and the modified parity coding techniques from experimental evaluation.

Reflective holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal(HPDLC) device has a multilayer structure consisting of alternate layers of polymer and liquid crystal droplets. Periodic modulation of a refractive index reflects light of a specific wavelength in accordance with Braggs law. Samples cured isotropically were illuminated with an Argon-ion lase at 514nm. We optimized the reflcetion efficiency of HPDLC as a function of monomer functionality, LC composition and irradiation intensity. The properties of the HPDLC films were observed by UV-visible spectroscopy. We found that the maximum reflection efficiency depends on the monomer functionality, LC composition, and laser intensity. We expect these films could be used in full-color reflective display by stacking them to obtain a mixture of colors.

This paper presents a new type of optical silicon accelerometer using deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) and micro-stereolithography technology. Optical silicon accelerometer is based on a mass suspended by four vertical beams. A vertical shutter at the end of the mass can only moves along the sensing axis in the optical path between two single-mode optical fibers. The shutter modulates intensity of light from a laser diode reaching a photo detector. With the DRIE technique for (100) silicon, it is possible to etch a vertical shutter and beam. This ensures low sensitivity to accelerations that are not along the sensing axis. The microstructure for sensor packaging and optical fiber fixing was fabricated using micro stereolithography technology. Designed sensors are two types and each resonant frequency is about 15 kHz and 5 kHz.
The dynamics of the dipolar demagnetizing field is investigated by numerical simulation. The effects of radiation damping, molecular diffusion, and relaxation processes on the dipolar demagnetizing field are examined in terms of the modulation pattern of the z-magnetization and the signal intensity variation. Simulations for multi-components suggest applications for sensitivity enhancement in favorable conditions.
