Towards a Ubiquitous Robotic Companion: Design and Implementation of Ubiquitous Robotic Service Framework

  • In recent years, motivated by the emergence of ubiquitous computing technologies, a new class of networked robots, ubiquitous robots, has been introduced. The Ubiquitous Robotic Companion (URC) is our conceptual vision of ubiquitous service robots that provide users with the services they need, anytime and anywhere in ubiquitous computing environments. To realize the vision of URC, one of the essential requirements for robotic systems is to support ubiquity of services: that is, a robot service must be always available even though there are changes in the service environments. Specifically robotic systems need to be automatically interoperable with sensors and devices in current service environments, rather than statically preprogrammed for them. In this paper, the design and implementation of a semantic-based ubiquitous robotic space (SemanticURS) is presented. SemanticURS enables automated integration of networked robots into ubiquitous computing environments exploiting Semantic Web Services and AI-based planning technologies.

지능형 서비스 로봇을 위한 선형 동적 시스템 기반의 감정 기반 행동 결정 모델 (Emotional Behavior Decision Model Based on Linear Dynamic System for Intelligent Service Robots)

  • This paper introduces an emotional behavior decision model based on linear system for intelligent service robots. An emotional model should make different behavior decisions according to the purpose of the robots. We propose an emotional behavior decision model which can change the character of intelligent service robots and make different behavior decisions although the situation and environment remain the same. We defined each emotional element such as reactive dynamics, internal dynamics, emotional dynamics, and behavior dynamics by state dynamic equations. The proposed system model is a linear dynamic system. If you want to add one external stimulus or behavior, you need to add just one dimensional vector to the matrix of external stimulus or behavior dynamics. The case of removing is same. The change of reactive dynamics, internal dynamics, emotional dynamics, and behavior dynamics also follows the same procedure. We implemented a cyber robot and an emotional head robot using 3D character for verifying the performance of the proposed emotional behavior decision model.

지능형 서비스 로봇을 위한 멀티 에이전트 모니터링 시스템 (Multi-Agent Monitoring System for Intelligent Service Robots)

  • 지능형 로봇의 사용자는 다양한 이유로 로봇의 상태 정보가 필요하다. 이러한 지능형 로봇의 상태 정보는 지능형 로봇을 구성하는 기능 에이전트의 상태 정보를 조합하여 생성할 수 있다. 하지만 기존 지능형 로봇 시스템은 1) 지능형 서비스 로봇의 상태 정보 생성을 위해 필요한 에이전트 상태 정보를 생성하지 않거나, 각기 다른 방법으로 생성하고 있어 이를 일괄적으로 수집할 수 없다. 또한 2) 복수의 사용자가 같은 정보를 요청하면 이를 여러 번 수집하여 데이터 중복성 문제가 발생하였고, 3) 한 가지 통신 방법만을 지원하여 사용자가 원하는 통신 방법을 제공하지 못한다는 한계점을 가지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 한계점을 해결하기 위한 지능형 서비스 로봇을 위한 멀티 에이전트 모니터링 시스템을 제안한다. 이 모니터링 시스템은 1) 기능 에이전트의 행위 수행에 따라 상태 정보를 생성하게 함으로써, 에이전트 상태 정보를 단일화된 방법으로 생성 및 수집할 수 있다. 또한 2) 모니터링 시스템이 사용자의 모니터링 수요에 따라 필요한 데이터를 한 번씩만 수집하여 데이터 중복성 문제를 해결하며, 3) 사용자가 원하는 통신 방법을 지원하는 프록시를 통해 상태 정보를 전달하여 통신 방법에 대한 호환성을 제공한다. 우리는 실험을 통해 이 모니터링 시스템이 다양한 통신 방법을 활용하여 여러 사용자에게 지능형 로봇의 상태 정보를 전달하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

  • The development of IT technology makes the functions and services of robots be integrated, and thus the robots become more intelligent and useful. As sophisticated usage of robots has evolved, direct communication by human language is necessary to increase the efficiency of their usage. In this paper, we propose a conversational interface platform for integrated service robots using MS Robotics Studio. The proposed platform consists of three types of components: a conversation manager to control the flows of the integrated service robots, a user interface to interact with users, and multiple service robots to perform actions or services. For a test-bed of the proposed platform, we build a schedule manager system and confirm the usability through SUS subject test by comparing the schedule manager system with MS Outlook.

  • In this paper, we discuss a service to give alarm in the case of emergency for the old and the weak by human behavior recognition in Intelligent Space. Our Intelligent Space consists of mobile robots, sensors and agents. And these components are connected to network framework. Agent analyzes data acquired from networked sensors and determines task of robots and a space to provide a service for humans. In our emergency alarm service, human behavior recognition service module analyzes accelerometer data obtained from body-attached human behavior sensing platform, and classifies into four basic human behavior such as walking, running, sitting and falling-down. For the old and the weak, falling-down behavior may bring about dangerous situations. On such an occasion, agent executes emergency alarm service immediately. And then a selected mobile robot approaches fallen person and sends images of the person to guardians. In this paper, we set up a scenario to verify the emergency alarm service in Intelligent Space, and show feasibility of the service from our simulation experiments.

  • We introduce new type of networked robot, Ubiquitous Robotic Companion (URC), embedded with ATLAS Service-oriented architecture for enhancing the space sensing capability. URC is a network-based robotic system developed by ETRI. For years of experience in deploying service with ATLAS sensor platform for elder and people with special needs in smart houses, we need networked robots to assist elder people in their successful daily living. Recently, pervasive computing technologies reveals possibilities of networked robots in smart spaces, consist of sensors, actuators and smart devices can collaborate with the other networked robot as a mobile sensing platform, a complex and sophisticated actuator and a human interface. This paper provides our experience in designing and implementing system architecture to integrate URC robots in pervasive computing environments using the University of Florida's ATLAS service-oriented architecture. In this paper, we focus on the integrated framework architecture of URC embedded with ATLAS platform. We show how the integrated URC system is enabled to provide better services which enhance the space sensing of URC in the smart space by applying service-oriented architecture characterized as flexibility in adding or deleting service components of Ubiquitous Robotic Companion.

  • In network human-robot interaction, human can access services of a robot system through the network The communication is done by interacting with the distributed sensors via voice, gestures or by using user network access device such as computer, PDA. The service organization and exploration is very important for this distributed system. In this paper we propose a new agent-based framework to integrate partners of this distributed system together and help users to explore the service effectively without complicated configuration. Our system consists of several robots. users and distributed sensors. These partners are connected in a decentralized but centralized control system using agent-based technology. Several experiments are conducted successfully using our framework The experiments show that this framework is good in term of increasing the availability of the system, reducing the time users and robots needs to connect to the network at the same time. The framework also provides some coordination methods for the human robot interaction system.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how children perceived the use of intelligent service robots in early childhood education and identifying the characteristics of the interaction between the children concerned and the robots. The subjects of this study were 49 kindergarten students from Girin Kindergarten in Gyeonggi-do. The results of this study suggested that the children personalized the robot and recognized it as their friend, regardless of their ages. In the interactions between the children and the robot, the children engaged in physical contact with the robot and occasionally tried to control its functions. In the child-robot interaction, the children searched their favorite functions and used them repeatedly, but also lost interest in those repeated functions. Regardless of their interest levels, however, the attendance or portfolio organization functions. With regard to the interaction between peers, there were frequent quarrels regarding the use of the robot at first, but these conflicts were resolved by the intervention of peers or teachers, and the children who were familiar with the use of the robot helped their friends; this was viewed as constituting cooperative behavior. Children usually used the robot with their friends. The robot was a medium for children to find new friends. Peer group activities were explored and new friendships were created as a result of the use of the robot.

  • 유동적으로 변화하는 환경에서 사용자의 요구에 따라 서비스를 제공하는 서비스 로봇은 클라우드 서비스와 같은 외부 서비스를 이용할 수 있어야 한다. 그러나 클라우드 서비스는 지속해서 변화하고 확장되므로 서비스의 기능 및 데이터 변경에 적응할 수 있는 일반적이고 유연한 인터페이스가 필요하다. 이를 위해 다양한 클라우드 서비스에 대한 모델 기반의 일반적인 인터페이스를 활용하여야 한다. 이러한 접근 방법을 통해 변경된 서비스에 접근할 수 있는 표준 서비스 프로파일을 정의함으로써 일반적이고 확장 가능한 인터페이스를 구현하였다. 또한, 지능형 서비스 로봇을 활용한 실험을 통해 새로운, 혹은 변경된 외부 서비스에 대해 유연하게 적응하는 결과를 검증하였다.

  • 지능로봇(Intelligent Robot)은 주변환경을 감지하는 센서로부터 실시간 정보를 수집하고 지능적인 기능을 수행한다. 지능로봇의 자가 재구성(Self-Reconfiguration) 능력은 외부 환경의 변화에 대응하기 위해 기능을 재구성하고, 오류가 발생하였을 때 중지 없이 스스로 회복할 수 있는 중요한 요소이다. 본 논문에서는 ESB(Enterprise Service Bus)를 사용한 지능로봇의 에이전트 기반 자가 재구성 프레임워크를 제안한다. 본 논문의 프궤임워크는 멀티에이전트 시스템을 이용한 서비스 지향 애플리케이션의 동적인 발견과 자가 재구성에 초점을 맞춘다. 지능로봇이 예외적인 상황을 만났을 때, 지능로봇은 외부의 서비스 저장소로부터 새로운 서비스를 다운로드 후 실행시켜 상황을 해결한다. 에이전트 기술은 로봇들이 상호작용하기 위한 지능적인 접근법을 제공하고, ESB는 분산된 서비스 또는 지식을 활용하고 조직하기 위한 방법을 제공한다. 또한 본 연구의 유효성을 보여주기 위해 프로토타입을 구현하였다.
