  • Traffic impact assessment plays a crucial role in resolving traffic issues that may arise during the implementation of urban and transportation projects. However, reported results diverge, presumably because the items reviewed differ. In this study, we analyze traffic improvement measures approved for traffic impact assessment, identify key items, and present items that should be included in assessments. Specifically, TF-IDF and N-gram analysis and text mining were performed with focus on urban development projects approved in Gyeonggi Province. The results obtained show that keywords associated with newly established transportation infrastructure, such as roads and intersections, were essential assessment items, followed by the locations of entrances and exits and pedestrian connectivity. We recommend that considerations of the items presented in this study be incorporated into future traffic impact assessment guidelines and standards to improve the consistency and objectivity of the assessment process.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the minimum proportion of probe vehicles for obtaining expressway traffic information using VISSIM, a micro traffic simulation model, between Yongin IC and Yangji IC on Yeongdong Expressway. 7,200 scenarios were created for the experiment, and 40 scenarios were adopted using the Latin hypercube sampling method because it was difficult to perform all the scenarios through experiments. The reliability of the experiment was improved by adding a situation when the general situation and the accident situation exist. In the experiments, the average travel time of probe vehicles at different market penetration rates were compared with the average travel time of the entire vehicles. As a result, the minimum market penetration rate of probe vehicles for obtaining expressway traffic information was found to be 45%. In addition, it is estimated that 25% market penetration rate of probe vehicle can meet 70% of traffic situations in accident scenario.

  • In this study, we analyzed the result of new inspection, accidents, penalties, and operation records of the elderly driver's driving aptitude test in the city bus using the Transport Workers Management System and the Digital Tachograph Analysis System(eTAS). As a result of the analysis, the results of the driver aptitude test were similar when compared with the traffic company which has many bus drivers and the well - And it was confirmed that the average number of serious injuries and slight injuries in case of accidents was small. Comparing the number of dangerous driving behaviors per 100 km of driving, the elderly driver of the excellent company showed that the number of dangerous driving behaviors is considerably smaller than other elderly and non - elderly drivers, and that the result of correcting the wrong driving habits.

  • The network mobility basic support (NEMO BS) protocol has been investigated to provide Internet connectivity for a group of nodes, which is suitable for intelligent transportation systems (ITS) applications. NEMO BS often increases the traffic load and handover latency because it is designed on the basis of mobile Internet protocol version 6 (MIPv6). Therefore, schemes combining proxy MIPv6 with NEMO (P-NEMO) have emerged to solve these problems. However, these schemes still suffer from packet loss and long handover latency during handover. Fast P-NEMO (FP-NEMO) has emerged to prevent these problems. Although the FP-NEMO accelerates handover, it can cause a serious tunneling burden between the mobile access gateways (MAGs) during handover. This problem becomes more critical as the traffic between the MAGs increases. Therefore, we propose a scheme for designing an improved FP-NEMO (IFP-NEMO) to eliminate the tunneling burden by registering a new address in advance. When the registration is completed before the layer 2 handover, the packets are forwarded to the new MAG directly and thereby the IFP-NEMO avoids the use of the tunnel between the MAGs during handover. For the evaluation of the performance of the IFP-NEMO compared with the FP-NEMO, we develop an analytical framework for fast handovers on the basis of P-NEMO. Finally, we demonstrate that the IFP-NEMO outperforms the FP-NEMO through numerical results.

  • Recently, along with the continuous increase in the supply of electric vehicles, electric vehicle fire accidents are also showing a rapidly increasing trend. Electric vehicle fires last for a long time compared to fires in internal combustion engine vehicles and have problems with the risk of secondary explosions and the generation of large amounts of smoke. In particular, electric vehicle fires in underground roads, which are semi-enclosed spaces, may amplify the problems of existing electric vehicle fires. On the other hand, there are no domestic response guidelines for electric vehicle fires occurring inside underground roads. Therefore, an awareness of fire accidents was confirmed through a survey of the general public, and electric vehicle fire characteristics and primary considerations were derived from stakeholders related to electric vehicle fires in underpasses. Through this, the guidelines for responding to electric vehicle fires on underground roads were established.

  • Variable Message Signs (VMS) is one of the major components for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) services that provides real-time traffic and incident information to drivers. The objective of this research was to develop a method determining the optimal location of VMS considering safety and driving characteristics of various drivers. A driving simulator was utilized to evaluate how drivers can safely exit to off-ramp depending on various VMS locations while information relating route diversion was provided. The binary logistic regression and factor analysis were applied in developing a probability model that predicts the success of safe off-ramp exiting. Based on the developed probability model, a method to estimate the spacing between VMS and off-ramp is suggested. It is expected that the products of this study would be utilized as a tool in determining VMS locations for ITS planners and designers.

  • The operational design domain (ODD) of autonomous vehicles needs to be expanded on highways and urban roads in light of the substantial commercialization of Level 3 autonomous vehicles. Therefore, this study developed a specific infrastructure autonomous vehicle-based cooperative driving service to ensure the driving safety of autonomous vehicles on city roads. The traffic operation efficiency, safety evaluation, and core evaluation indices for each service were selected and analyzed to study the effect of each service. The result of the analysis confirmed that the traffic operation efficiency and safety of autonomous vehicles were improved through the V2X communication-based autonomous cooperative driving service. On the whole, the significance of this study is in deriving the effect of the autonomous cooperative driving service based on V2X communication on urban roads with interrupting traffic flow.

  • This study identified the factors that affect travel time budget by mode for traveler in Seoul using the SUR model. Individual, household and TAZ characteristics were selected as the explanatory variables. Transportation modes are summarized from 18 types to 6 types(walking, personal car, bus, subway, rail and bicycle). The results showed a distinct difference between personal transportation and public transportation. First of all, People who owned a car and driver's licence tend to prefer personal transportation. In addition, we can confirm the relationship between the bus and the subway which are most typical public transportation. Passengers who can available a personal mode preferred the subway than the bus. It is expected to suggest various implications related to the public transportation policy for Seoul metropolitan area.

  • As part of the Smart Seoul policy, the importance of using big urban data is being highlighted. Furthermore interest in the impact of transportation-related urban environmental factors such as PM10 and noise on citizen's quality of life is steadily increasing. This study established the integrated DB by matching IoT big data with transportation data, including traffic volume and speed in the microscopic Spatio-temporal scope. This data analyzed the impact of a spatial unit in the road-effect zone on environmental risk level. In addition, spatial units with similar characteristics of road traffic and environmental factors were clustered. The results of this study can provide the basis for systematically establishing environmental risk management of urban spatial units such as PM10 or PM2.5 hot-spot and noise hot-spot.
