  • In order to examine the feasibility of Carbon Capture & Sequestration, a major technological strategy for the national goal of greenhouse gas reduction, this paper studies the various methods and corresponding costs for the transportation of $CO_2$ captured at the domestic thermal power plants, as well as performing comparative analysis with overseas CCS demonstration projects. It is predicted that the investment cost would be about 98 million USD when the using land-based pipelines to transport captured $CO_2$ from the thermal power plant located in the south coast. And using marine-based offshore pipelines, it will cost about twice the amount. When the captured $CO_2$ is transported from the power plant in the west coast instead, the cost is expected to increase substantially due to the transportation distance to the storage site being more than double to that of the south coast power plant case.

  • The capacity factor of nuclear power plant in Korea is the highest level in the world. However, the integrity assessment of nuclear power plant is depended on foreign country. Especially, most eddy current testing systems for inspecting steam generators in nuclear power plant are currently imported from USA, Canada, and so on. Therefore, the eddy current testing system can react more active and adaptive from economic and managerial standpoint for actual nuclear power plants in Korea is required. In this paper, an eddy current testing system for inspecting steam generators in nuclear power plants is introduced. Frequency generator, analog circuit, analog digital converter circuit, and digital control circuit are composed in eddy current testing system. A benchmarking of acquisition system and acquisition software, eddynet 11i made by Zetec, and modifications are carried out based on the test environment of Korea nuclear power plants. Finally, all eddy current apparatus are integrated to inspect steam generator tubes in nuclear power plants.

  • The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has been developing pyroprocessing technology for recycling useful resources from spent fuel since 1997. The process includes pretreatment, electroreduction, electrorefining, electrowinning, and a waste salt treatment system. This paper briefly addresses unit processes and related innovative technologies. As for the electroreduction step, a stainless steel mesh basket was applied for adaption of granules of uranium oxide. This basket was designed for ready handling and transfer of feed material. A graphite cathode was used for the continuous collection of uranium dendrite in the electrorefining system. This enhances the throughput of the electrorefiner. A particular mesh type stirrer was designed to inhibit uranium spill-over at the liquid Cd crucible. A residual actinide recovery system was also tested to recover TRU tracer. In order to reduce the waste volume, a crystallization method is employed for Cs and Sr removal. Experiments on the unit processes were tested successfully, and based on the results, engineering-scale equipment has been designed for the PRIDE (PyRoprocess Integrated inactive DEmonstration facility).

  • Incineration is conceptually sound as a waste treatment technology. There is, however, concern over its emissions when it is improperly designed and operated. An electrostatic precipitator is one of the most commonly used devices to control particulate emissions from boilers, incinerators and some other industrial processes. In this work, a modular electrostatic precipitator with sizing of $1m{\times}1m{\times}1m$ was developed for removal of particulate matter from the exhaust gases of a small waste incinerator. Its design was based on a simple wire-and-plate concept. The corona discharge wires were connected to a positive high-voltage pulse generator, while the collection plates were grounded. The high-voltage pulse generator was used to produce the corona discharge field between the individual discharge wire and the collection plate. The particulate-laden exhaust gas flow was directed across the corona discharge field. The charged particles were deflected outward and collected on the plate. The collection efficiency was evaluated as a mass loading ratio between the difference at the inlet and the outlet to the particulate loading at the inlet of the precipitator. The collection efficiency of this modular electrostatic precipitator design was approximately 80 %.

  • In the nuclear industry, mechanical engineers spend a significant portion of their time designing equipment such as manipulators, bogies, mechanical grippers, and so on. Some customized designs can be considered as standard mechanical equipment in this area, although it is not unusual to find that an existing design cannot simply be copied from one project to another. Varied performance requirements can dictate that redesign, often quite extensive redesign, is required. However, if something similar has been done before, engineers could use that as a starting point for the new project. In this regard, this study presents several guidelines inspired by previous design knowledge for similar development cases. Moreover, this study presents more detailed suggestions such as design guidelines for an argon-based hot cell atmosphere and design experience for a large-scale practical hot cell facility. Design considerations and case studies dealt with in this study are dedicated to teleoperation manipulators that are used at a large-scale argon cell facility for pyroprocess integrated inactive demonstration (PRIDE), at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. In particular, for case studies to support the suggested recommendations, a fabricated telemanipulator system for PRIDE is introduced, and several kinds of experimental results associated with it are presented.

  • A fully integrated multistandard multiband CMOS mobile TV tuner with small silicon area and low power consumption is proposed for receiving multiple mobile digital TV signals and FM signal. In order to reduce the silicon area of the multistandard multiband receiver, other RF front-end circuits except LNAs are shared and a local oscillator (LO) signal generation architecture with a single VCO for a frequency synthesizer is proposed. To reduce the low frequency noise and the power consumption, a vertical NPN BJT is used in an analog baseband circuits. The RF tuner IC is implemented in a $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. The RF tuner IC satisfies all specifications for DVB-H/T, T-DMB, and ISDB-T with a sufficient margin and a successful demonstration has been carried out for DVB-H/T, T-DMB, and ISDB-T with a digital demodulator.

  • The scope of this study is the construction conformity assessment system according to the new paradigm of construction management To minimize the differences between domestic and international state, construction Conformity Assessment is subdivided into system certification and product certification. For the former, WASCON(Worldwide Assessment System of Construction Quality Maturity Stage) is applied. For the latter, AQUA(Advanced Quality Assessment System) was developed and adopted to model project for demonstration. Both systems are designed to enable quantified rating, integrated into PQCS(Project Quality Certification), which is an advanced project quality certification system. The construction work observing PQCS will gain quality score on its own quality certificate(Quality mark on construction itself or facilities is also available, if needed or preferred by customers). This Quality Rating System will inspire and encourage any related parties. PQCS score would let supplier/constructor recognize how much themselves are operating effectively and efficiently, offering them the opportunity of redeeming their weaknesses.

  • Integrated Coastal Management(ICM) has been recommended by international organizations and experts as a desirable way of dealing with the current problems of ocean pollution and ocean conservation and dealing with the conflicts among the various users of coastal and ocean resources. As a response, the Korean government legislated Coastal Management Act in 1999. following the Act, local governments were required to make a local integrated coastal management plan(LICMP). Though the LICMPs are made, it is not easy to put LICMP in effect, because the mandates of the Coastal Management Act are not clear and there are conflicts regarding the jurisdiction of the coastal areas among relevant departments of the government and because it is not easy to monitor and supervise the activities along the vast areas of coasts and oceans. The traditional method of Implementing the LICMP was not simply feasible. Community-based approach to the ICM was proposed as an alternative to the traditional method. This study aims to examine and introduce the community-based network of organizations as an alternative form of organization best suited to the integrated coastal management. This study is composed of four major parts. First, it examines the advantages of the network as a form of organization vis-vis the market and the hierarchy. Second, it reviews three well-known cases of integrated coastal management programs - Xiamen ICM program in China, Coastcare in Australia and Atlantic Coastal Action Program in Canada. Third, on the basis of the case study, it proposes principles and guidelines which we need to consider when we introduce the community-based approach to the ICM in Korea. Fourth, this study also reports on the actual networking processes in Yeosu City(the Yeosu Network for the effective implementation of integrated coastal management plan). The networking in Yeosu will serve as a demonstration of networking various stake-holders concerned with the balance between the development and conservation of finite ocean resources.
