  • In this study, the effect of shape parameters on the J-R curves of curved CT specimens was evaluated using the limit load method. Fracture toughness tests considering the shape factors L/W and $R_m/t$ of the specimens were also performed. Thereafter, the J-R curves of the curved CT specimens were compared using the J-integral equation proposed in the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and limit load solution. The J-R curves of the curved CT specimens were also compared with those of the CWP (curved wide plate), which is regarded to be similar to real pipe and standard specimens. Finally, the effectiveness of the J-R curve of each curved CT specimen was evaluated. The results of this study can be used for assessing the applicability of curved CT specimens in the accurate evaluation of the fracture toughness of real pipes.

  • This paper describes three-dimensional (3-D) standard curves for conductive dipping buried bodies in induced polarization (IP) method. Dipole-dipole IP responses for the dipping bodies are calculated by the numerical modeling technique using an integral equation solution. Dip angles of the bodies are 0, 20, 45, 70 and 90 degrees, respectively. The horizontal (0-degree dip) and vertical (90-degree dip) bodies produce symmetrical patterns of IP responses. The dipping bodies of 20, 45 and 70 degrees, however, produce asymmertical patterns, with the highest IP contours dipping in the direction opposite to the bodies in pseudo-sections. The most remarkable asymmetrical pattern appears in the model of 20-degree dip. It is difficult to distinguish the body of 70-degree dip from that of 90-degree dip on the basis of dipole-dipole IP data. The IP pattern in pseudo-sections varies when the line moves away from the center of the body along strike, with the anomaly deeper and smaller in amplitude. IP maps seem to be more useful than IP pseudo-sections in predicting the location of target.

  • In this study, wave transformation by damping due to the permeable bed of finite depth is investigated. The relationship between wave damping rate and relative water depth are presented. The damping rate is used in the eigenfunction expansion method to calculate the wave dissipation over the permeable bed. For a permeable shoal, the eigenfunction expansion model result is compared with that of the integral equation method to show good agreement. The model is also used to examine the wave reflection over the permeable planar slope of various frequency. It has been found that in general relatively short waves are more influenced by the permeability of the permeable seabed than relatively long waves unless the water depth is so large that the influence of permeable bed on surface water waves disappears.

  • An efficient method for implementing image reconstruction algorithms for Compton cameras is presented. Since Compton scattering formula establishes a cone surface from which the incident photon must have originated, it is crucial to implement a computationally efficient cone-surface integration method for image reconstruction. In this paper we assume that a cone is made up of a series of ellipses (or circles) stacked up one on top of the other. In order to reduce computational burden for tracing ellipses formed by the intersection of a cone and an image plane, we propose a new method using a series of imaginary planes perpendicular to the cone axis so that each plane contains a circle, not an ellipse. In this case the cone surface integral can be performed by simply accumulating the circles along the cone axis. To reduce the computational cost of tracing circles, only one of the circles in the cone is traced and the rest are determined by using simple trigonometric ratios. For our experiments, we used the three different schemes for tracing ellipses; (i) using the samples generated by the ellipse equation, (ii) using the fixed number of samples along a circle on the imaginary plane, and (iii) using the fixed sampling interval along a circle on the imaginary plane. We then compared performance of the above three methods by applying them to the two reconstruction algorithms - the simple back-projection method and the expectation-maximization algorithm. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed methods (ii) and (iii) using imaginary planes significantly improve reconstruction accuracy as well as computational efficiency.

  • This paper proposes a MPC (Model Predictive Control) method for the torque and flux controls of induction motor. The proposed MPC method selects the optimized voltage vector for the matrix converter control using the predictive modeling equation of the induction motor and cost function. Hence, the reference voltage vector that minimizes the cost function of the torque and flux error within the control period is selected and applied to the actual system. As a result, it is possible to perform the torque and flux control of induction motor using only the MPC controller without a PI (Proportional-Integral) or hysteresis controller. Even though the proposed control algorithm is more complicated and has lots of computations compared with the conventional MPC, it can perform torque ripple reduction by synthesizing voltage vectors of various magnitude. This feature provides the reduction of amount of calculations and the improvement of the control performance through the adjustment of the number of the unit vectors n. The proposed control method is validated through the PSIM simulation.

  • Machinery enclosures are widely adopted to reduce the noise emission in various fields of application. Emitted noise, which is due to the vibration of enclosure's outer surface, is composed of two kinds of sound with different path of propagation. One is the "structure-borne sound", while the other is "air-borne sound". In order to get a most efficient machinery enclouser a prudent consideration upon the above structure-borne and air-borne sound is required, as the guiding principle of contermeasure for each noise is quite different. The controlling of input vibration and its isolation are major subjects for the structure-borne sound, and the specifications of absorbing members and damping panels are the major related matters for the air-borne sound. Hence, it seems very efficient to separate the total sounds into two categories with a great accuracy when one think of further reduction of noise from the existing enclosure, although its separating methods have not been made clear for many years. Author proposes an application method of experimental modal analysis to extract the structure-borne sound from the measured total radiation sound, as the air-borne sound is deduced by the vectorial difference between the measured total radiation sound and the calculated structure-borne sound. In order to calculate the correct structure-borne sound by the excitation at an arbitrary point on the enclosure structure, it is important to decide 1) how to estimate the enclosure's surface vibration velocity and 2) how to compute the radiation sound which is considered as the effect of vibration modes of enclosure surface. The former can be solved with total frequency response function calculated by the application of experimental modal analysis. The latter is to be solved by the author's new approaches for radiation sound computation by means of the Rayleigh's integral equation and the boundary-element method applied complex surface vibration velocity. As a first step, structure-borne sound by the excitation at an arbitry point on the rectangular plate with fixed edges, has been calculated to verified the reliability of the developed computation methods. The results of calculation show good agreements with those of the actual measurements.actual measurements.

  • Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations, employing the B3LYP method and the LANL2DZ, 6-31G$^*$(LANL2DZ for Tc), 6-31G$^*$(cc-pVDZ-pp for Tc) and DGDZVP basis sets, have been performed to investigate the electronic structures and absorption spectra of the technetium-99m-labeled methylenediphosphonate ($^{99m}Tc$-MDP) complex of the simplest diphosphonate ligand. The bonding situations and natural bond orbital compositions were studied by the Mulliken population analysis (MPA) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. The results indicate that the ${\sigma}$ and ${\pi}$ contributions to the Tc-O bonds are strongly polarized towards the oxygen atoms and the ionic contribution to the Tc-O bonding is larger than the covalent contribution. The electronic transitions investigated by TDDFT calculations and molecular orbital analyses show that the origin of all absorption bands is ascribed to the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) character. The solvent effect on the electronic structures and absorption spectra has also been studied by performing DFT and TDDFT calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G$^*$(cc-pVDZ-pp for Tc) level with the integral equation formalism polarized continuum model (IEFPCM) in different media. It is found that the absorption spectra display blue shift in different extents with the increase of solvent polarity.

  • Superrsolution of an optical imaging system, which resolves $\epsilon_O$ (half width of the square top amplitude impulse function) less than the Rayleigh's resolution limit $\epsilon_R$, is theoretically treated by using the diffraction theory, and an experimental system is proposed. Initially superresolution is stated as an inverse problem, and an integral equation is derived as a function of parameter $\beta$, which is positive. The integration is numerically carried out for the given aperture and those given values of $\beta$, which is 1, 5, 10, 15, and 20. 1/2$\times$FWHM's of the amplitude impulse functions are meassured for the cases of diffrent value of {J and in the case of $\beta=5$, the half-width already approaches to $\epsilon_O=0.1$,urn, which is, in the case of the present work, one fifth of the Rayleigh's resolution limit. It is found both the pupil function and the phase of the Huygens wave are to be modified, and theories of the pupil function modulation plate and the phase modulation hologram plate are also presented. The result obtained may be useful in ultrafine optical lithography.graphy.

  • The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the safety under extreme environmental conditions and the dynamic safety under service environment conditions, of oceanographic buoy mooring systems consisting of a variety of materials, including chain, wire rope, nylon rope, and polypropylene rope. For the static safety assessment of a mooring system, after the calculation of external forces and the division of a mooring system into finite elements, the numerical integral was conducted to yield the elemental static tension until satisfying the geometrical convergence condition. To evaluate the dynamic safety, various processes were considered, including data collection about the anticipated areas for mooring, a determination of the parameters for the interpretation, the interpretation of the dynamic characteristics based on an analytic equation that takes into account the heave motion effect of a buoy hull and a mooring system, and a fatigue analysis of the linear cumulative damage. Based on the analysis results, a supplementary proposal for a wire rope that has a fracture in an actual mooring area was established.

  • Even if the various data analyzing methods were suggested to examine the measured slope behaviors, it is difficult to find methods or procedures for connecting the analyzed results of slope stability and measured slope data. This research suggests the analyzing methods combing the stability analysis and measured data based on progressive failure of slope. Slope failure analysis by time degradation were calculated by strength parameters composed of strength reduction coefficients, also which were compared to the measured data according to the variations of safety factor and displacement of slopes. The accumulated displacement curve were shown as 3rd degree polynomials by suggested procedures, which was the same as before researches. The reverse displacement velocity curves were shown as linear function for prediction of brittle slope failures, also they were shown as 3rd degree polynomials for ductile slope failures, which were the same as the suggested equation by Fukuzono (1985) and they were very similar behaviors to the in-situ failure cases.
