Accidents caused by water absorption in water-cooled generator stator windings often occur all over the world. The absorption into the insulator of the coolant, which is used to cool down the heat generated by stator windings during operation, leads to the deterioration of dielectric strength, and insulation breakdown. An insulation breakdown may cause not only an enormous economic loss but also a very serious grid accident that would compromise stable supply of electric power. More than 50 % of domestic generators have been in operation for more than 15 years, and water absorption tests performed on 50 water-cooled generator stator windings during a five-year planned preventive maintenance period beginning in 2006 identified water absorption problems in 10 of them, all of which required repair. Because the existing water absorption test detects this problem by utilizing stochastic methods after measuring the capacitances at the final positions of insulation breakdown, its accuracy is limited. This study demonstrates that water absorption can be more accurately diagnosed by utilizing method along with a more precise one.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze AC Breakdown of solid/air composite insulation depending on the thickness and the pressure of dry air for eco-friendly insulation. SF6 gas has been widely used in electric equipment as gas insulation because of high dielectric strength and arc extinguishing performance. However, because SF6 gas is one of the green house effect gases, alternative insulation such as SF6 mixture, extremely low temperature gas, vacuum, liquid and solid insulating are being investigated.

Due to the outstanding insulating characteristics, Laminated Polypropylene paper (LPP) and Kraft paper have been used as ac power insulation for conventional cable. Recently, both of LPP and Kraft has been studied as main insulation fur high temperature superconducting (HTS) cable. Ifowever, studies on the use of LPP/Kraft paper for HTS cables are thinly scattered. In this paper, the comparison among LPP, Kraft and LPP/Kraft Samples impregnated with liquid nitrogen $(LN_2)$ on dielectric insulation characteristics was investigated. It was found from the experimental data that the breakdown strength becomes lower in the order LPP, Lpp/Kraft and Kraft but the lifetime indices n becomes lower in the order Kraft, LPP/Kraft, LPP. Moreover, partial discharge inception and dielectric loss tangent become lower in the order Kraft, LPP, LPP/Kraft.

In this study, the interfacial dielectric breakdown phenomenon of interface between Epoxy and Rubber was discussed, which affects the stability of insulation system of power delivery devices. The breakdown strength of specimens are observed by applying high AC voltage at the room temperature. The breakdown times under the constant voltage below the breakdown voltage were gained. As constant voltage is applied, the breakdown time is proportion to the breakdown strength. The life exponent n is gained by inverse power law and the long time breakdown life time can be evaluated.

Recently, with the increase of demand of electricity, electric cable or electric transfer machine are rapidly developed and meet the demand with the extra high voltage and massive capacity, the dangers of electrical accident of insulator are increasing by the electric stress, insulation degradation and insulation breakdown in insulator. In this paper, it is investigated that the temperature dependance of dielectric strength in nano-composites. We obtained that breakdown voltage of 0.4 [wt%] specimens is higher than the other $SiO_2$ content.
In recent times, gas insulated medium voltage (MV) circuit breakers (CB) form a vital component in power system network, considering its advantages such as reduced size and safety margins. Gas insulation characteristics of circuit breakers are generally measured by lightning impulse (LI) test according to IEC standard 60060-1 as a factory routine test. Considering the environmental issues of $SF_6$ gas, many research works are being carried out towards the mixture of $SF_6$ gases for high voltage insulation applications. However, few reports are only available regarding the LI withstand and streamer propagation characteristics (at both positive and negative polarity of waveform) of $SF_6/N_2$ gas mixture insulated medium voltage circuit breakers. In this paper, positive and negative polarity LI tests are carried out on 22 kV medium voltage circuit breaker filled with $SF_6/N_2$ gas mixture at different gas pressures (1-5 bar) and at different gas mixture ratios. Important LI parameters such as breakdown voltage, streamer velocity, time to breakdown and acceleration voltage are evaluated with IEC standard LI ($1.2/50{\mu}s$) waveform. Weibull distribution analysis of LI breakdown voltage data is carried out and 50% probability breakdown voltage, scale parameter and shape parameter are evaluated. Results illustrate that the $25%SF_6+75%N_2$ gas filled insulation considerably enhances the LI withstand and breakdown strength of MV circuit breakers. LI breakdown voltage of circuit breaker under negative polarity shows higher value when compared with positive polarity. Results show that maintaining the gas pressure at 0.3 MPa (3 bar) with 10% $SF_6$ gas mixed with 90% $N_2$ will give optimum lighting impulse withstand performance of 22 kV MV circuit breaker.

With the advent of nano-particle fillers in insulating materials, the insulating materials of superior quality have come to fore. In the recent past, nanocomposite LDPE/XLPE (Low Density Polyethylene/Cross Linked Polyethylene) power cable dielectrics have been synthesized. A preliminary evaluation of these new class of materials seem to show that, addition of small amounts of sub-micron inorganic fillers improved the dielectric properties of the composite, in particular, the volume resistivity, and the DC breakdown strength. The thermal behaviour, for example, the stability of composites against decomposition and ensuing electrical failure, do not seem to have been addressed. In a conventional XLPE insulated cable, the average thermal breakdown strength and maximum temperature at the onset of breakdown were seen to be markedly lower than the corresponding intrinsic breakdown strength and decomposition temperature. In this page, analysis of DC Breakdown of nano-composite insulating material for HVDC Cable is introduced.

In this study, 40, 50, 60, and 70 wt% filler dispersed samples were prepared for the current GIS Spacer or environmentally friendly GIS. In the AC electrical breakdown, EMSC and EMAC decreased with increasing filler content, and EMSC showed better breakdown strength than EMAC. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength and flexural strength of EMSC and EMAC were also increased with increasing filler content. In addition, EMSC results in better mechanical properties than EMAC. The reason for this is considered to be one in which the influence of the interface is important.

Converter transformer is the key equipment of high voltage direct current transmission system. The solid suspending particles originating from the process of installation and operation of converter transformer have significant influence on the insulation performance of transformer oil, especially in presence of DC component in applied voltage. Under high electric field, the particles easily lead to partial discharge and breakdown of insulating oil. This paper investigated copper particle effect on the breakdown voltage of transformer oil at combined AC and DC voltage. A simulation model with single copper particle was established to interpret the particle effect on the breakdown strength of insulating oil. The experimental and simulation results showed that the particles distort the electric field. The breakdown voltage of insulating oil contaminated with copper particle decreases with the increase of particle number, and the breakdown voltage and the logarithm of particle number approximately satisfy the linear relationship. With the increase of the DC component in applied voltage, the breakdown voltage of contaminated insulating oil decreases. The simulation results show that the particle collides with the electrode more frequently with more DC component contained in the applied voltage, which will trigger more discharge and decrease the breakdown voltage of insulating oil.

In this paper, in order to investigate the lifetime of oil-paper insulation, specimens were artificially aged with thermal and electrical multiple stresses. Accelerated ageing factors and equivalent operating years for each aging temperatures were derived from results of tensile strengths for the aged paper specimens. Also, the evaluation for the multi-stress aged specimens were carried out through the measurement of impulse breakdown voltage at high temperature of $85^{\circ}C$. The lifetimes of the oil-paper insulations were calculated with the value of 66.7 for 1.0 mm thickness specimens and 69.7 for 1.25 mm thickness specimens throughout the analysis of impulse BD voltages using equivalent operating years, which means that dielectric strengths would not be severely decreased until the mechanical lifetime limit. Therefore, for the lifetime evaluation of the oil-paper insulation, thermal aging would be considered as a dominant factor whereas electrical degradation would be less effective.
