The purpose of this study was to explore differences in social information processing according to children's sex and types of aggression in response to instrumental and relational provocation factors. Two hundred and fifty-one 4, 5, and 6 graders were selected from an elementary school in Seoul. To evaluate their social information processing, the Intent Attributions and Feelings of Distress(Crick, 1995; Fitzgerald & Asher, 1987) and Response Decision Instrument(Crick & Werner, 1998) were revised and analyzed. A peer-nomination measure(Crick, 1995; Crick & Grotpeter, 1995) was used to select aggressive groups. Data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis and multivariate [2(sex: M, F)${\times}$3(type of aggression: overt, relational, overt and relational aggression)] analysis of variance. Findings revealed that children's social information processing patterns were different according to sex and type of aggression. Also aggressive children responded differently in their social information processing according to instrumental and relational provocation factors. Implications of these findings for the role of gender, aggression type, and provocation type are discussed in order to better understanding of children's social information processing.
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the potential and to examine the effect of narrative, as an alternative approach to teach formal proof in more easier and comprehensible way. Identifying the key elements of narrative in proof, we constructed a narrative that derives the equation of function translation. We examined the effect of teaching through the narrative, in comparison with teaching the corresponding proof, on low-achieving students' instrumental understanding and relational understanding of function translation. Since we found no statistically significant differences between the experimental and the comparison group, this study could not conclude that teaching through the narrative was more effective than teaching the corresponding proof. But there were some qualitative differences in the relational understanding responses and the evaluation of the teaching between two groups. These findings suggested some potential of narratives that complement the formal proof.
For preservice teachers' instrumental-to-relational pedagogical content knowledge transformations, this research designed several didactical tasks based on Kinach's cognitive strategies. The researcher identified preservice teachers' understanding about what is a definition and how to teach it. By challenging their fixed ideas about definitions, the researcher could motivate them to embrace the new teaching approach which guides reinvention of definitions. The PCK development was not the simple process of filling their tabular rasa PCK with theories of mathematics education, but the dialectical process of identifying, challenging, changing and extending preservice teachers' existent PCK. This research will contribute to explore new directions of mathematics teachers' PCK development and the method of teacher education.
Although ‘to understand mathematics’ is an important educational purpose, most student do not have a relational understanding of the basic concept of mathematics but have a instrumental understanding. This paper will investigate the possibility of using computers for enhancing relational understanding. In the ‘Qualitative case study’, three students who are in the first grade at E-High school took part in 7 activities during four weeks, and were later interviewed and engaged in informal discussion and were observed. This is the result of this study. 1. The three students were passive participants in mathematics problem solving situation at school. Therefore, student B just applied formulas which she had memorized, and student C would forgot the formulas occasionally. These common students needed to participate actively in doing mathematics. 2. The activities utilized two software healing with connection between graphs and function, giving the students the opportunity to plan, practice, and test by themselves. As a result, they understood the mathematical formulas and rules more deeply through their own trial and error, and then they gained thinking abilities necessary for doing mathematics. In addition, the activities boosted their confidence. 3. The understanding type of students was slightly different. Student A who received a high score, understood the most relationally, but student B who received a very high score, understood instrumentally and so couldn't app1y her knowledge to solving problems related to function concept. Student C who received a middle score lacked knowledge of mathematics but thought more creatively. The result is that students need an opportunity to think rotationally regardless of score. Therefore, this study concludes that using computer software will provide a positive effect for relational understanding in loaming function concept.
This study reports a research which was conducted on how frequently and where the students use the unit circle method while dealing with trigonometric functions in solving the trigonometry questions. Moreover, the reasons behind the choice of the methods, which could be the unit circle method, the ratio method, or the use of trigonometric identities, are also investigated to get an insight about their understanding. In this study, the relationship between the students' choices of methods in solving questions is examined in terms of instrumental or relational understanding. This is a multi-method research which involves a range of research strategies. The research techniques used in this study are test, verbal protocol (think aloud), and interview. The test has been applied to ten tenth grade students of a public school to get students' solution processes on the paper. Later on, verbal protocol has been performed with three students of these ten who were of the upper, middle and lower sets in terms of their performance in the test. The aim was to get much deeper data on the students' thinking and reasoning. Finally, interview questions have been asked both these three students and other three from the initial ten students to question the reasons behind their answers to the trigonometry questions. Findings in general suggest that students voluntarily choose to learn instrumentally whose reasons include teachers' and students' preference for the easier option and the anxiety resulting from the external exam pressure.
This research was implemented to know how mathematics education is performed both in a school and in the private institute based on Skemp' Theory that strongly takes an emphasis on understanding of mathematics principle. On this study, I compare the method of a teacher in a school with in a private institute accompanying the analysis of textbook in teaching. The results are the followings: First, textbooks used in a school and an institute are not helpful for relational understanding of students, and the textbook used in school was more suitable for students than that in institute. Second, in the case of teaching methods, school teacher has focused more relational schema with the students than an private institute institutor, As we said, in school mathematics education is implemented focusing on the understanding of mathematics. According to this, students should to trust public education more than private institute in constructing schema in mathematics learning.
The purpose of this study was to examine How the exploratory activities using Excel and GSP which are exploratory software, in learning analytic geometry affected on the underachievers' analytic geometry concept development process. The subjects of 5 students who received the 8th~9th grades from their examination of the last semester, participated in a total of 7 units based on Skemp's intelligent learning model. The results of the study showed that there were two important cases found to nearly achieve the category $R_2$. One was reflective thinking could happen through exploratory software in category $R_1$. The other was the exploratory activities which could have the same effectiveness as the relational understanding in category $I_2$, as Skemp mentioned that there is a room to be achieved in the elementary level when such relational understanding is achieved.
This study examines Natal in Brazil as a Smart Tourism Destination (STD) based on the perception of public and private managers who are members of the City Tourism Council. The research utilizes a systemic perspective of STD proposed by Ivars-Baidal et al. (2016), consisting of three interconnected levels: Strategic-Relational, Instrumental, and Applied. The findings reveal that Natal faces challenges in terms of infrastructure, accessibility, security, connectivity, and sensoring, which hinder its progress as STD. The study also identifies opportunities in the form of governance structures with smart destinations and the inclusion of smartness guidelines in the City Master Plan. The research aims to contribute to the theoretical understanding of STD and its application in destination development. It highlights the need for innovative planning and management in Natal, emphasizing that adopting the STD from a systemic perspective can enhance competitiveness and elevate the level of smartness in the destination.
This research is how students and teacher apprehend mathematics education, pointing out problem areas as a basis on how to improve students understanding of mathematics through improved guidance by teachers in the future. 1107 high school students and 105 teachers from around Daejeon and Choongnam province were surveyed and the results were as follows. 1. 77 %( 852) of students viewed the "application of problem solving methods" as understanding mathematic problems. 2. Replies to the question on understanding the study of mathematics resulted in 85.7% of teachers saying "it is the understanding of the basic concept to which you solve the problems" 3. For questions relating to the large difference in-class mathematics achievements and mock University entrance exam achievements, students' response that "for in-class tests you only have to learn problems with similar form but the mock tests are not like that" pointed out the problem in the area of mathematics education. 4. For future mathematic education teachers will have to "explain better and more completely the basic principles and concepts before solving problems" , and make an effort to stimulate students by "creating a more fun atmosphere" . There will also be the need to prevent as much as possible, the use of "formula or memory driven problems" and encourage students to initiate problem solving for themselves.; and encourage students to initiate problem solving for themselves.
