  • The dynamic stability of classical plates and Mindlin plates subjected to pulsating follower forces is investigated in this paper. Using the finite element method, the induced equation is reduced to that of one with finite degrees of freedom. Then, the multiple scales method is applied to analyze the dynamic instability region. The effects of aspect ratio, Poisson ratio, rotary inertia and shear deformation on the dynamic stability of plates are studied in this paper.

  • In this paper, an efficient LP method ofr discrete harmonic spectra is proposed and discussed. A new efficient LP method is a combination of recursive and frequency selective LP. While the recursive LP provides better spectral matching in spectral hills, frequency selective LP eliminates numerical instability and improves spectral matching when the harmonics are confined in the low frequncy region. The proposed LP method is applied to the HILN coder. Simulation results using a verification model(VM) software for real audio signals show a definite trend of significant improvement.

  • The transition boiling of a liquid droplet on a heated flat surface was studied utilizing Kotake's model with the effects of viscosity of a thin vapor layer between the droplet and the hot plate taken into account. This problem was analyzed considering the process of the droplet evaporation which resulted in hydrodynamic instability at the liquid-vapor interface. The results of the study are as follows; (1)The effect of the viscosity in the vapor layer at the interface appears as a dimensionless number N, namely .sigma. .delta.$_{0}$ /.rho.nu.$^{2}$ (2)The time required for evaporation at the transitional region increases with the temperature difference ratio .DELTA. T$_{r}$. The rate of increase of the total evaporation time becomes larger as increasing of N$_{m}$(N number at maximum heat flux) increases.s.

  • Behaviors of lean premixed flame of propane/air and methane/air flame anchored by a pilot flame in a tube were investigated experimentally varying the mean velocity from 10 to 140 cm/s and the equivalence ratio from 0.45 to 0.8. Behaviors of both flames are divided into five regions of stable, flash-back, tail-out, flickering and vibrating. General characteristics of each region and Le number effect are investigated. Two main instabilities, flickering and vibration, are both unstable but the instability mechanism, the frequency and the amplitude of pressure fluctuation are different. In the edge of the vibrating region, pressure fluctuation repeats generation and extinction. Repeated growth and decrease of the amplitude of pressure fluctuation are explained by Rayleigh#s index.

  • The deformation and dynamic behavior mechanism of submerged shell-like lattice structures with membranes are in principle of a non-conservative nature as circulatory system under hydrostatic pressure and disturbance forces of various types, existing in a marine environment. This paper deals with a characteristic analysis on quasi-periodic and chaotic behavior of a circular arch under follower forces with small disturbances. The stability region chart of the disturbed equilibrium in an excitation field was calculated numerically. Then, the periodic and chaotic behaviors of a circular arch were investigated by executing the time histories of motion, power spectrum, phase plane portraits and the Poincare section. According to the results of these studies, the state of a dynamic aspect scenario of a circular arch could be shifted from one of quasi-oscillatory motion to one of chaotic motion. Moreover, the correlation dimension of fractal dynamics was calculated corresponding to stochastic behaviors of a circular arch. This research indicates the possibility of making use of the correlation dimension as a stability index.

  • This paper concerns the application and demonstration of sliding mode observer for aeroelastic system, which is robust to model uncertainty including mass and stiffness of the system and various disturbances. The performance of a sliding mode observer is compared with that of a conventional Kalman filter to demonstrate robustness and disturbance decoupling characteristics. Aeroelastic instability may occur when an elastic structure is moving even in subcritical flow speed region. Simulation results using sliding mode observer are presented to control aeroelastic response of flapped wing system due to various external excitations as well as model uncertainty and sinusoidal disturbances in subcritical incompressible flow region.

  • From the short-period variability survey (SPVS) in Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory, we obtained time-series BV CCD images in the region of an open cluster M38 (NGC 1912) for 23 nights from February 1, 2007 to December 7, 2008. We found 18 $\delta$ Scuti stars and 2 $\gamma$ Doradus stars. Among them, only 3 $\delta$ Scuti stars were known ones. From the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of M38, most of them have been located in the instability strip. The two $\gamma$ Doradus stars have been located within $\gamma$ Doradus strip of M38. But, only four $\delta$ Scuti stars were located within radius 10' from the center of M38. To confirm of their membership for M38, we need more study, such as, proper motion by spectroscopic observation.

  • We performed a discharge analysis on ac plasma display panel through the numerical simulation of the EF (Energy Fluid) model using the electron's energy equation. When it is compared to the results of commonly used LFA (Local Field Approximation) model, there is a clear difference in the spatiotemporal distribution of Xe excited species. In particular, the experimentally observed striation phenomena in the anode region could be observed in EF model and the occurrence of the striation was attributed to the ionization and excitation instability due to the streaming electrons in the anode region plasma.

  • The fluid induced vibration (FIV) phenomena of an equivalent airfoil system of MAV have been investigated in low Reynolds number flow region. Unsteady flows with viscosity are computed using two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The present fluid/structure interaction analysis is based on one of the most accurate computational approach with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) techniques. The highly nonlinear fluid/structure interaction phenomena due to severe flow separations have been analyzed for the low Reynolds region that has a dominancy of flow viscosity. The effects of Reynolds number and initial angle of attack on the fluid/structure coupled vibration instability are shown and the qualitative trend of FIV phenomenon is investigated.
