  • In this study, to examine the effect of a hole size change(smaller hole diameter) in the outer region of the lower-support-structure-bottom plate(LSSBP) on the reactor core-inlet flow-distribution, simulations were conducted with the commercial CFD software, ANSYS CFX R.15. The predicted results were compared with those of the original LSSBP. Through these comparisons, it was concluded that a more uniform distribution of the mass flow rate at the core-inlet plane could be obtained by reducing the hole size in the outer region of the LSSBP. Therefore, from the nuclear regulatory perspective, design change of the hole pattern in the outer region of the LSSBP may be desirable in terms of improving both the mechanical integrity of the fuel assembly and the core thermal margin.

  • This paper presents simple models for flow and the PIG dynamics when it passes through a $90^{\circ}$ curved section of pipeline. The simulation has been done with two different operational boundary conditions. The solution fur non-linear hyperbolic partial equations for flow is given by using MOC. The Runge-Kuta method is used to solve the initial condition equation fur flow and the PIG dynamics equation. The simulation results show that the proposed model and solution can be used fur estimating the PIG dynamics when the pig runs in the pipeline including curved section. In this paper, dynamic modeling and its analysis for the PIG flow through $90^{\circ}$ curved pipe with compressible and unsteady flow are studied. The PIG dynamics model is derived by using Lagrange equation under assumption that it passes through 3 different sections in the curved pipeline such that it moves into, inside and out of the curved section. The downstream and up stream flow dynamics including the curved sections are solved using MOC. The effectiveness of the derived mathematical models is estimated by simulation results fur a low pressure natural gas pipeline including downward and upward curved sections. The simulation results show that the proposed model and solution can be used for estimating the PIG dynamics when we pig the pipeline including curved section.

  • Flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC), liquid droplet impingement erosion (LDIE), cavitation and flashing can cause continuous wall-thinning in nuclear secondary pipes. In order to prevent pipe rupture events resulting from the wall-thinning, most NPPs (nuclear power plants) implement their management programs, which include periodic thickness inspection using UT (ultrasonic test). Meanwhile, it is well known in field experiences that the thickness measurement errors (or deviations) are often comparable with the amount of thickness reduction. Because of these errors, it is difficult to estimate wall-thinning exactly whether the significant thinning has occurred in the inspected components or not. In the previous study, the authors presented an approximate estimation procedure as the first step for thickness measurement deviations at each inspected component and the statistical & quantitative characteristics of the measurement deviations using plant experience data. In this study, statistical significance was quantified for the current methods used for wall-thinning determination. Also, the authors proposed new estimation procedures for determining local wall-thinning to overcome the weakness of the current methods, in which the proposed procedure is based on analysis of variance (ANOVA) method using subgrouping of measured thinning values at all measurement grids. The new procedures were also quantified for their statistical significance. As the results, it is confirmed that the new methods have better estimation confidence than the methods having used until now.

  • In constructing all kinds of equipment and steel structure, parts with discontinuities such as weld defects formed in the welded structure can generate fatigue cracks that results in damage or accidents. In this study, weld zones are investigated with X-rays and the latent images are put on film. Weld zone defects can be verified by developing the film. As weld defects are investigated by radiographic testing and correlated with the welding condition, more appropriate welding conditions can be found. According to the result of X-ray radiographic inspection of butt welding ATOS 80 high-strength steel with a thickness of 12mm, the best conditions for welding without creating weld defects are 4 weld-passes, a protective gas of 20% $CO_2$ and 80% Ar, a protective gas flow of 20L/min, a welding current of 200A, an arc voltage of 24V, a welding speed of 14.4cm/min, a welding rod angle of $50^{\circ}$, a welding gap of 5 mm with a ceramic base, and sand pre-heating to $160^{\circ}$ Celsius prior to welding.

  • The ultimate behavior of high-strength concrete beams is studied with respect to their strength. Thirteen beams were analyzed and the results are presented herein. The variable parameters were the concrete's compressive strength, from 57 to 184 MPa and the amount of lateral torsional reinforcement, from 0.35 to 1.49%. The ultimate torsional strengths from tests were compared with those by this proposed theory and by the ACI code. As a consequence, The ultimate torsional strengths by this proposed theory show the better results than those by the ACI code.

  • Wall-thinned defects caused by accelerated corrosion due to fluid flow in the inner pipe appear in many structures of the secondary systems in nuclear power plants (NPPs) and are a major factor in degrading the integrity of pipes. Wall-thinned defects need to be managed not only when the NPP is under maintenance but also when the NPP is in normal operation. To this end, a test technique was developed in this study to detect such wall-thinned defects based on the temperature difference on the surface of a hot pipe using infrared (IR) thermography and a cooling device. Finite element analysis (FEA) was conducted to examine the tendency and experimental conditions for the cooling experiment. Based on the FEA results, the equipment was configured before the cooling experiment was conducted. The IR camera was then used to detect defects in the inner pipe of the pipe specimen that had artificially induced defects. The IR thermography developed in this study is expected to help resolve the issues related to the limitations of non-destructive inspection techniques that are currently conducted for NPP secondary systems and is expected to be very useful on the NPPs site.

  • The most tunnel damage such as cracks or leakage which exist in tunnel lining commonly, is caused by the voids where exist behind the tunnel lining, through the tunnel safety inspections. These voids were analysed to affect to a stability of a running-tunnel seriously. The aim of this paper is to develope the lightweight foam concrete for tunnel backfilling material using stone-dust of cake state and to apply the lightweight foam concrete developed to the old tunnel. This paper shows the basic properties of lightweight foam concrete mixed with stone-dust including flow rate, unit volume weight, absorption rate and compressive strength. In addition, according to the designed compound ratio, the lightweight foam concrete was applied to the ASSM tunnel for an application assessment. The engineering application of the lightweight foam concrete as the old tunnel's backfilling material was confirmed in this assessment.

  • In this study, a fluidized bed particle generator was developed to generate an aerosol without supply of compressed air and to increase portability. It was assumed that the mixing ratio of the test particles and beads, the input amount, and the air flow rate supplied to the generator would have effect on the aerosol generation characteristics. The product of these three parameters was set as a characteristic parameter and particle generation characteristics according to the change of the characteristic parameter were observed. As a result, it was confirmed that the input amount of test particles and beads was not suitable as a characteristic parameter and a characteristic parameter expressed as a product of the mass mixing ratio and the air flowrate was newly defined. When the new characteristic parameter is applied, it can be confirmed that the total amount of particles generated from the particle generator is a function of the characteristic parameter. As a result of measuring the amount of particle generation by adjusting the characteristic parameter, it was confirmed that the performance required for the test particle generator for the field inspection equipment of PM-2.5 sensors could be satisfied.

  • One of the cause of embankment failure for piping is a routine design for piping consideration without exact understanding of that. Therefore, in this study, comparison and analysis of existing piping consideration methods had been conducted through embankment sections when sheet piles constructed on sandy ground. For the Terzaghi method and the critical hydraulic method, safety factors were changed up to double depending on the method. And for the critical velocity method, it was dramatically changed due to design parameters. Consequently, existing piping consideration method currently used is recommended not to be applied to all ground conditions uniformly but to applied with exact understanding of each consideration method characteristics depending on ground conditions.
