  • A new isolated boost dc to dc convertor suitable for a low input voltage application is proposed. The proposed convertor features the low switch current stresses, the wide input voltage range operation, and the inherent inrush current protection characteristics, essential to design a low to high voltage conversion circuit. A comparative analysis and experimental results are presented to show the validity of the proposed convertor.

  • In this paper the method to limit inrush currents for unloaded transformers is proposed by controlling the opening instant in order to predetermine the residual flux. For the purpose of verifying the performance of the proposed method the test circuit with a single phase transformer is established and the effect of the controlled method is studied. With the basis of the obtained results the controlled method for three phase transformers with a wye-delta winding is also proposed. The analysis studies using EMTP(Electro-Magnetic Transient Program) are carried out in order to reveal its effectiveness.

  • 본 논문에서는 E-bike 구동을 위한 Boost 컨버터의 배터리 전류 제한 기법에 관해 제안한다. Boost 컨버터를 E-bike에 적용할 경우, 기동 시 큰 전류를 보충하기 위해 출력 단에 Super Capacitor가 사용된다. 이로 인해 생기는 입력 단의 Inrush 전류는 회로 구성 소자의 파손 문제를 발생시킬 수 있다. 그 뿐만 아니라, 배터리 입장에서의 Inrush 전류 및 모터 기동 시 순간의 큰 전류는 자체적 손상 및 수명 저하 문제를 야기한다. 상기 문제를 해결하기 위해 본 논문에서는 E-bike 적용 배터리의 수명 연장을 위한, 배터리 전류 제한 제어 기법을 제안한다. 컨버터 입력 전류인 배터리 전류를 제한함으로써, 큰 전류에 의한 소자 파손 및 배터리의 안정성 문제를 해결하였으며, 이를 통해 배터리의 수명을 연장이 가능하였다. 이를 모의실험 및 실험을 통해 타당성을 검증하였다.

  • This paper proposes a new protective relaying algorithm using Neuro-Fuzzy and wavelet transform. To organize advanced nuero-fuzzy algorithm, it is important to select target data reflecting various transformer transient states. These data are made of changing-rates of Dl coefficient and RSM value within half cycle after fault occurrence. Subsequently, advanced neuro-fuzzy algorithm is obtained by converging the target data. As a result of applying the advanced neuro-fuzzy algorithm, discrimination between internal fault and inrush is correctly distinguished within 1/2 after fault occurrence. Accordingly, it is evaluated that the proposed algorithm can effectively protect a transformer by correcting discrimination between winding fault and inrushing state.

  • The four fuzzy criteria to distinguish the internal fault from the inrush for the power transformer protection have been identified. They are based on the wave shape, terminal voltage, fundamental and second harmonic component of differential current. A systemetic way to determine the associated fuzzy membership function is also proposed.

  • The effects of transient inrush currents on the dynamic characteristics of percentage differential relays are studied when the power transformers are reenergized. An algorithm of estimation the nonlinear magnetic property of power transformer and current trnasformer core are developed. Using this method, we can analyze the effect of inrush currents on the trip region of the percentage differential relays corresponding to the variation of the phase angle and the residual magnetism at the instant of switch closing. Test results are used to verify the availibility of the proposed algorithm. Finally a case study is performed to the 110 MVA main transformer in hydraulic power station.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm for reducing the starting current when the single-phase induction motor starts and analyzes its operation. Generally, the single-phase induction motors require several starters to generate the starting torque due to their structural characteristics. In this paper, a capacitor-start / capacitor-run method of the single-phase induction motor is basically adopted. This conventional method is efficient and has a large starting torque, but it generates about 5 ~ 6 times of inrush current at startup. As a result, the freezer starting device and peripheral devices are damaged and life time may be reduced. To reduce the inrush current, the current control algorithm based on the virtual dq model is presented to control the starting current. In addition, it validates the proposed algorithm through experiments to smooth transit from start-up operation to the rated operating region.

  • The transformer role is very important in power system operation and control; also its price is very expensive. Therefore many kinds of the efforts for transformer protection have been executed. So for as, current differential relay(87) has been mainly used for transformer protection. But current differential relaying method has several troubles as followings. Differential current can be occurred by transformers inrush current between winding1 and winding2 of transformer when transformer is initially energized. Also harmonic restrained element used in current differential relaying method is one of the causes of relays mal-operation because recently harmonics in power system gradually increase by power switching devices(SVC, FACTS, DSC, etc). Therefore many kinds of effort have been executed to solve the trouble of current differential relay and one of them is method using ratio of increment of flux linkages(RIFL) of the primary and secondary windings. This paper introduces a novel protective relay for power transformers using RIFL of the primary and secondary windings. Novel protective relay successfully discriminates between transformer internal faults and normal operation conditions including inrush and this paper includes real time test results using RTDS(Real Time Digital Simulator) for novel protective relay. A novel protective relay was designed using the TMS320C32 digital signal processor and consisted of DSP module. A/D converter module, DI/DO module, MMI interface module and LCD display module and developed by Xelpower co., Ltd.
