  • This study develops a two stage procedure to identify the structural damage based on the optimized artificial neural networks. Initially, the modal strain energy index (MSEI) is established to extract the damaged elements and to reduce the computational time. Then the genetic algorithm (GA) and artificial neural networks (ANNs) are combined to detect the damage severity. The input of the network is modal strain energy index and the output is the flexural stiffness of the beam elements. The principal component analysis (PCA) is utilized to reduce the input variants of the neural network. By using the genetic algorithm to optimize the parameters, the ANNs can significantly improve the accuracy and convergence of the damage identification. The influence of noise on damage identification results is also studied. The simulation and experiment on beam structures shows that the adaptive parameter selection neural network can identify the damage location and severity of beam structures with high accuracy.

  • This paper presents a design technique of self tuning fuzzy controller for load frequency control of power system. The proposed parameter self tuning algorithm of fuzzy controller is based on the gradient method using four direction vectors which make error between inference values of fuzzy controller and output values of the specially selected optimal controller reduce steepestly. Using input-output data pair obtained from optimal controller, the parameters in antecedent part and in consequent part of fuzzy inference rules are learned and tuned automatically using the proposed gradient method. The related simulation results show that the proposed fuzzy controller is more powerful than the conventional ones for reductions of undershoot and steady-state load frequency deviation and for minimization of settling time.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient scene based non-uniformity correction algorithm which performs the offset correction using the uniform obtained from input scenes for Infrared camera. In general, pixel outputs of a infrared detector can not be uniform. Therefore, the non-uniformity correction procedure need to be performed to make the image outputs uniform. A typical non-uniformity correction method uses a black body at the laboratory to obtain the output of the infrared detector's pixels for two temperatures, HOT and COLD, and calculates the non-uniformity correction parameters. However, output characteristics of the Infrared detector changes while the Infrared camera is operated, the fixed pattern noise of the Infrared detector and dead pixels are generated. To remove the noise, the offset correction is generally performed. The offset correction procedure usually need the additional device such as a thermo-electric cooler, shutter, or non-uniformity correction lens. Therefore, we introduce a general scene based non-uniformity correction technique without additional equipment, and then we propose an improved non-uniformity correction algorithm based on image to solve the problem of the existing technique.

  • This paper presents a pattern recognition analysis of two spirals problem and optimization of Cascade Correlation learning algorithm using in combination with a non-monotone function as CosExp(cosine-modulated symmetric exponential function) and a monotone function as sigmoid function. In addition, the algorithm's optimization is attempted. By using genetic algorithms the optimization of the algorithm will attempt. In the first experiment, by using CosExp activation function for candidate neurons of the learning algorithm is analyzed the recognized pattern in input space of the two spirals problem. In the second experiment, CosExp function for output neurons is used. In the third experiment, the sigmoid activation functions with various parameters for candidate neurons in 8 pools and CosExp function for output neurons are used. In the fourth experiment, the parameters are composed of 8 pools and displacement of the sigmoid function to determine the value of the three parameters is obtained using genetic algorithms. The parameter values applied to the sigmoid activation functions for candidate neurons are used. To evaluate the performance of these algorithms, each step of the training input pattern classification shows the shape of the two spirals. In the optimizing process, the number of hidden neurons was reduced from 28 to15, and finally the learning algorithm with 12 hidden neurons was optimized.

  • In this study, we analyze the behavior of concrete which contains zeolite and diatomite. In order to achieve the goal, we utilize expert system methods. The utilized methods are artificial neural network and adaptive network-based fuzzy inference systems. In this respect, we exploit seven different mixes of concrete. The concrete mixes contain zeolite, diatomite, mixture of zeolite and diatomite. All seven concrete mixes are exposed to 28, 56 and 90 days' compressive strength experiments with 63 specimens. The results of the compressive strength experiments are used as input data during the training and testing of expert system methods. In terms of artificial neural network and adaptive network-based fuzzy models, data format comprises seven input parameters, which are; the age of samples (days), amount of Portland cement, zeolite, diatomite, aggregate, water and hyper plasticizer. On the other hand, the output parameter is defined as the compressive strength of concrete. In the models, training and testing results have concluded that both expert system model yield thrilling medium to predict the compressive strength of concrete containing zeolite and diatomite.

  • As the temperature has changed by climate change, changes in its own characteristic values of the chemical substance or the movement and distribution of chemicals take place in accordance with the changes of hydrological and meteorological phenomena. Depending on the impact of climate change on the chemical behavior, it is necessary to understand and predict quantitative changes in the dynamics of the environment of pollutants due to climate change in order to predict in advance the occurrence of environmental disasters, and minimize the impact on the life and the environment after the incident. In this study, we have analysed and compared chemical fate models validated by previous studies in terms of model configuration, application size and input/output factors. The potential models applicable to municipal and industrial areas were selected on the basis of characteristic of each model, availability of input parameters and consideration for climate change, identified the problems, and then presented an approach to improve applicability.

  • An intelligent performance diagnostic program using the Neural Network was proposed for PW206C turboshaft engine. It was selected as a power plant for the tilt rotor type Smart UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) which has been developed by KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute). For teaming the NN, a BPN with one hidden, one input and one output layer was used. The input layer had seven neurons of variations of measurement parameters such as SHP, MF, P2, T2, P4, T4 and T5, and the output layer used 6 neurons of degradation ratios of flow capacities and efficiencies for compressor, compressor turbine and power turbine. Database for network teaming and test was constructed using a gas turbine performance simulation program. From application results for diagnostics of the PW206C turboshaft engine using the learned networks, it was confirmed that the proposed diagnostics algorithm could detect well the single fault types such as compressor fouling and compressor turbine erosion.

  • In this study, we propose a new optimization algorithm for a withdrawal weighted SAW transversal filter to satisfy given, specifications such as bandwidth, ripple, insertion loss, and sidelobe rejection level. An analysis tool for the withdrawal weighted filter has been produced by means of the delta function model, and has been applied to the design of a filter consisting of an uniform input IDT and a withdrawal weighted output IDT. This optimization algorithm consists of three routines, which eventually determines eight design parameters to satisfy the performance specifications. At the first step, the number of input and output IDT fingers and their geometrical size are determined by the insertion loss specification. At the next step, the bandwidth is controlled by the change of the IDT finger position. Finally, the sidelobe rejection level is modified through the add/skip technique of IDT fingers. The algorithm in this paper is distinct from conventional techniques in that it can simultaneously consider all the specifications such as bandwidth, ripple, sidelobe rejection level and insertion loss, and optimize the geometry of the withdrawal weighted SAW filter.

  • This paper has presented research results for the switching mode class E frequency multiplier that has simple circuit structure and high efficiency. Frequency multiplication is coming from the nonlinearity of the active component, and this paper models the FET active component as a simple switch and some parasitics to analyze the characteristics. The matching component parameters for the class E frequency doubler have been derived with modeling the FET as a input controlled switch and some parasitics. A circuit simulator, ADS, is used to simulate the output voltage and current waveform and efficiency with the variation of the parasitic values. With 2.9GHz input and 2V bias, the drain efficiency has been decreased from 98% to 28% with changing the parasitic capacitance from 0pF to 1pF at 5.8GHz output, which shows that the parasitic capacitance CP has the most significant effect on the efficiency among the parasitics of FET.
