  • This paper presents a Neural Network Identification (NNI) method for modeling of highly complicated nonlinear and time varing human system with a pneumatically driven mock circulation system of Left Ventricular Assist Device(LVD). This system consists of electronic circuits and pneumatic driving circuits. The initation of systole and the pumping duration can be determined by the computer program. The line pressure from a pressure transducer inserted in the pneumatic line was recorded. System modeling is completed using the adaptively trained backpropagation learning algorithms with input variables, Heart Rate(HR), Systole-Diastole Rate(SDR), which can vary state of system, and preload, afterload, which indicate the systemic dynamic characteristics and output parameters are preload, afterload.

  • This paper deals with an economic evaluation of domestic window type photoelectrochemical hydrogen production utilizing solar cells. We make some sensitivity analysis of hydrogen production prices by changing the values of input factors such as the initial capital cost, the solar to hydrogen conversion efficiency, and the system duration time. The hydrogen production price of the window type photoelectrochemical system was estimated as 1,168,972 won/$kgH_2$. It is expected that hydrogen production cost can be reduced to 47,601 won/$kgH_2$ if the solar to hydrogen conversion efficiency is increased to 14%, the system duration time is increased to 20,000 hours, and the initial capital cost is decreased to 25% of the current level. We also evaluate the hydrogen production cost of the water electrolysis using the electricity produced by solar cells. The corresponding hydrogen production cost was estimated as 37,838 won/$kgH_2$. The photoelectrochemical hydrogen production is evaluated as uneconomical at this time, and we need to enhance the solar to hydrogen conversion efficiency and the system duration time as well as to reduce prices of the system facilities.

  • Recently, slope stability analysis in current design criteria is criticized for its unrealistic assumption of groundwater table and slope stability analysis incorporating seepage analysis considering rainfall is gaining a recognition as an alternative. However, a reasonable method for determining the rainfall used in the seepage analysis has not yet been established. Rainfall input for seepage analysis is a time series of rainfall and is similar to the hyetograph which is usually obtained from hydrology. In this paper a method to obtain the hyetograph from the intensity-duration-frequency is proposed. The resulting hyetograph can be used in the in the slope design stage. Also some considerations for practical application of slope stability analysis considering the rainfall is included.

  • The importance of seismic design is greatly emphasized recently in Korea, resulting in an increase in the number of dynamic analysis being performed. One of the most important input parameters for the dynamic seismic analysis is input ground motion. However, it is common practice to use recorded motions from U.S. or Japan without considering the seismic environment of Korea or synthetic motions generated in the frequency domain. The recorded motions are not suitable for the seismic environment of Korea since the variation in the duration and energy with the earthquake magnitude cannot be considered. The artificial motions generated in frequency domain used to generated design response spectrum compatible ground motion has the problem of generating motions that have different frequency characteristics compared to real recordings. In this study, an algorithm that generates target response spectrum compatible ground motions in time domain is used to generate a suite of input ground motions. The generated motions are shown to preserve the non-stationary characteristics of the real ground motion and at the same, almost perfectly match the design response spectrum.

  • In this study, we investigate the magnetic latitude of phase reversal on the sudden commencement (SC)-associated preliminary impulse with 267 SC events using the ground magnetometer data of the IMAGE from 1997 to 2005. During SC event, geomagnetic fields are affected by various currents flowing in the magnetosphere and/or ionosphere. In particular, high-latitude geomagnetic field variations are significantly dominated by the change of SC-associated field aligned current (FAC). Until now, however, there are few studies to examine where the location of the FAC in the ionosphere is and what determines the location of the FAC. The location of the SC-associated FAC can be examined by using magnetometer data obtained from high-latitude stations distributed along the same magnetic meridian. The phase reversal locations are concentrated two regions, ~62 deg (L~4.5) and ~70 deg (L~8.5) in magnetic latitude. If FAC is a result of a mode conversion from fast mode to Alfven mode, then the FAC location could be determine by the duration time of the input energy. When we use the rise time, dT, as the input energy, there is no relationship between dT and the location where the first pulse of SC is reversed. We consider other factors such as local time and solar wind condition.

  • An iterative learning control scheme for exact-tracking control and parameter estimation of uncertain robotic systems is presented. In the learning control structure, tracking and feedforward input converge globally and asymptotically as iteration increases. Since convergence of parameter errors depends only on the persistent exciting condition of system trajectories along the iteration independently of length of trajectories, it may be achieved with only system trajectories of small duration. In addition, these learning control schemes are expected to be effectively applicable to time-varying parametric systems as well as time-invariant systems, for the parameter estimation is performed at each fixed time along the iteration. Finally, no usage of acceleration signal and no in version of estimated inertia matrix in the parameter estimator makes these learning control schemes more feasible.

  • The design of flow control protocols for integrared networks with complete voice traffic on the data link level is investigated. The class of admissible flow control policies analyzed maximized the average data link throughput subject to an average system time delay constraints a finite intervals (O,s). In particular, it is shown that the optimum control law is bang-bang (window flow mechanism). The window size L can be analytically derived from maximum tolerated time delay T, the input arrival C of the queueing system, the duration of the time interval S, the initial number of packets in the queue.

  • Impact response of a vibro-impact system and its contact mechanism was studied. The vibro-impact system is composed of a small secondary system is constrained to move along a slot of fixed length in a large primary system. The contact mechanism is characterized by its coefficient of restitution. Numerical simulation analysis has been used to determine the time-history and the impact statistics of the primary and secondary systems. Input excitation of the primary system was random, and the responses obtained were the velocities of the primary and secondary system, the closing velocity in time axis and the duration time between impacts. The validity of the numerical simulation method was checked by comparing the results with those obtained by other researchers analytically. It is shown that the results obtained by the nemerical simulation analysis showed a good agreement with those for the analytical method.

  • A new approach on identifying a first-order plus time-delay (FOPTD) model using finite--duration pulse inputs has been presented recently [1]. The identification methods are very simple because it is enough to observe only two extremes and the time when they occur in the transient response to pulse input. However, when there is mismatch between actual system and FOPTD model. how sensitive the methods are has not been studied. In this paper, we investigate robustness issue of those identification algorithms in the presence of the model structure mismatch and uncertainties. Through an example we will demonstrate it.

  • Counting statistics modified by introducing two dead times in series under a Poisson input distribution are discussed. A previous study examined the two cases of series combinations of nonextended-extended (NE-E) and extended-extended (EE) dead times. The present study investigated the remaining two cases of extended-nonextended (E-NE) and nonextended-nonextended (NE-NE) dead times. For the three time origins of the counting processes - ordinary, equilibrium, and shifted processes - a set of formulae was newly developed from a general formulation and presented for the event time interval densities, total densities, and exact mean and variance of the counts in a given counting duration. The asymptotic expressions for the mean and variance of the counts, which are most convenient for applications, were fully listed. The equilibrium mean count rates distorted by the three dead times in series were newly derived from the information obtained in these studies. An application of the derived formulae is briefly discussed.
