Enrichment and verification of differentially expressed miRNAs in bursa of Fabricius in two breeds of duck

  • Objective: The bursa of Fabricius (BF) is a central humoral immune organ belonging specifically to avians. Recent studies had suggested that miRNAs were active regulators involved in the immune processes. This study was to investigate the possible differences of the BF at miRNA level between two genetically disparate duck breeds. Methods: Using Illumina next-generation sequencing, the miRNAs libraries of ducks were established. Results: The results showed that there were 66 differentially expressed miRNAs and 28 novel miRNAs in bursa. A set of abundant miRNAs (i.e., let-7, miR-146a-5p, miR-21-5p, miR-17~92) which are involved in immunity and disease were detected and the predicted target genes of the novel miRNAs were associated with duck high anti-adversity ability. By gene ontology analysis and enriching KEGG pathway, the targets of differential expressed miRNAs were mainly involved in immunity and disease, supporting that there were differences in the BF immune functions between the two duck breeds. In addition, the metabolic pathway had the maximum enriched target genes and some enriched pathways that were related to cell cycle, protein synthesis, cell proliferation and apoptosis. It indicted that the difference of metabolism may be one of the reasons leading the immune difference between the BF of two duck breeds. Conclusion: This data lists the main differences in the BF at miRNAs level between two genetically disparate duck breeds and lays a foundation to carry out molecular assisted breeding of poultry in the future.

  • Technical change and technological innovation have become major drivers of economic progress in the knowledge oriented economies where growth, productivity, and competitiveness are increasingly based on improved technologies, novel products, upgraded processes or customized services. The creation of new knowledge, modifying or improving existent knowledge, or imitation of others, has become central to economic development. New discoveries, state-of-the-art information gathering procedures, or successful problem solving routines are often at he core of these innovations. Despite the generally acknowledged importance of science in many high-tech areas of major economic relevance, there is few science-related statistics to be found in high-profile international benchmarking reports. This paper aims to provide an answer by advancing our understanding of the possibilities of indicators quantifying linkages between science and technology. Central are the concepts of innovation capability and science/technology interface, which are used to assemble a wide range of empirical studies and quantitative indicators to summarize their possibilities and limitations for producing comparative statistics. For the purpose of the study, we extracted the US patents by Korean assignees or inventors, scientific papers cited in the patents in order to analyze the characteristics of linkage of scientific knowledge flows. The review focuses on indicators dealing with flows of written or codified information, and indicators of inventiveness that capture the non-codifiable tacit knowledge dimension. General conclusions will be drawn with a view towards further developments in the foreseeable future, suggesting new avenues for the design and implementation of patent-based and inventor-based relationships between scientific research and technical development within the context of regional or national systems of innovation.

  • This study is due to global competition, the wall between regions is disappearing, customer needs are diversified, and market and technology are rapidly changing. Future growth engines, the importance of convergence capabilities for industrial competitiveness is being emphasized more. Therefore, companies should seek innovative means to increase the efficiency of the company by establishing optimized global management environment and establishing direction and strategy for utilization of convergence technology by improving industrial competitiveness. Firms must adopt and utilize related new technologies by strengthening their convergence capabilities through dynamic capabilities that are internal resource bases for new product development and process innovation. Globalize markets and technologies can expect higher innovation performance when aligning strategic direction with formalized technology competencies held by the firm and incorporating the convergence capabilities needed for technological innovation into processes. The study focuses on the effects of market and technology orientation on technological innovation performance, whether dynamic and convergence capabilities affect technological innovation performance, and dynamic and convergence capabilities to mediate between market and technology orientation. For the study, we surveyed 51.4% of global and multinational corporations that are internationally active or headquartered overseas. Based on the previous studies, hypotheses were established and the collected data were analyzed through utilization path analysis and Sobel test.

  • In the service-oriented economy, knowledge and skills are considered core resources to secure competitive advantages and service innovation. Knowledge management capability, which facilitates to produce, share, accumulate and reuse knowledge, becomes as important as knowledge itself to create service value. Along with knowledge management capability, dynamic capability and operational capability are the key capabilities related to managing service delivery processes. Previous studies indicated that these three capabilities are related to service innovation. Although separately investigate the relationship between the three capabilities. The purpose of this study is 1) to define variables that have effects on service innovation including knowledge management capability, dynamic capability and operational capability, and 2) to empirically test to identify relationship among variables. In this study, knowledge management capability is defined as the capability to manage knowledge process. Dynamic capability is regarded as the firm's ability to integrate, build, and reconfigure internal and external competences to address rapidly changing environments. Operational capability refers to a high-level routine that, together with its implementing input flows, confers upon an organization's management a set of decision options for producing significant outputs of a particular type. The proposed research model was tested against the data collected through the survey method. The survey questionnaire was distributed to the managers who participated in an educational program for management consulting. Each individual who answered the questionnaire represented a knowledge based service firm. About 212 surveys questionnaires were sent via e-mail or directly delivered to respondents. The number of useable responses was 93. Measurement items were adapted from previous studies to reflect the characteristics of the industry each informant worked in. All measurement items were in, 5 point Likert scale with anchors ranging from strongly disagree (1) to strongly agree (5). Out of 93 respondents, about 81% were male, 82% of respondents were in their 30s. In terms of jobs, managers were 39.78%, professions/technicians were 24.73%, researchers were 12.90%, and sales people were 10.75%. Most of respondents worked for medium size enterprises (47,31%) in their, less than 30 employees (46.24%) in their number of employees, and less than 10 million USD (65.59%) in terms of sales volume. To test the proposed research model, structural equation modeling (SEM) technique (SPSS 16.0 and AMOS version 5) was used. We found that the three organizational capabilities have influence on service innovation directly or indirectly. Knowledge management capability directly affects dynamic capability and service innovation but indirectly affect operational capability through dynamic capability. Dynamic capability has no direct impact on service innovation, but influence service innovation indirectly through operational capability. Operational capability was found to positively affect service innovation. In sum, three organizational capabilities (knowledge management capability, dynamic capability and operational capability) need to be strategically managed at firm level, because organizational capabilities are significantly related to service innovation. An interesting result is that dynamic capability has a positive effect on service innovation only indirectly through operational capability. This result indicates that service innovation might have a characteristics similar to process innovation rather than product orientation. The results also show that organizational capabilities are inter-correlated to influence each other. Dynamic capability enables effective resource management, arrangement, and integration. Through these dynamic capability affected activities, strategic agility and responsibility get strength. Knowledge management capability intensify dynamic capability and service innovation. Knowledge management capability is the basis of dynamic capability as well. The theoretical and practical implications are discussed further in the conclusion section.

  • Many enterprises have recently been pursuing process innovation or improvement to attain their performance goal. To comprehensively support business process execution, the concept of business process management (BPM) has been widely adopted. A life cycle of BPM is composed of process diagnosis, (re)design, and enactment. For aligning with enterprise strategies, all BPM activities must be closely related to performance metrics because the metrics are the drivers and evaluators of business process operations. The objective of this paper is to propose a life cycle-based BPM framework integrated with the process-based performance measurement model, in which business processes are systematically interrelated with key performance indicators (KPIs) during an entire BPM life cycle. By using the proposed BPM framework, company practitioners involved in process innovation projects can easily and efficiently find the most influencing processes upon enterprise performance in the process diagnosis phase, evaluate the performance of newly designed process in the process (re)design phase, monitor the KPIs of new business process, and adjust business process activities in the process execution phase through the BPM life cycle.

  • In order to utilize BSC as an operational tool for communicating strategies across the hierarchies of the organization, a growing number of companies have tried to link BSC processes with other PI tools. Company D has carried out the SEM project to identify the causal structure between innovation activities and performance management in 2005 and 2006. The company synthesizes BSC and 6 Sigma methodologies at the BU level, and the new process made it possible to manage performances and make decision more "realistic" on the basis of information technologies. We expect that this study provide organizations, which have difficulties streamlining the performance management processes at the strategic level and those of operational level, with implications for realizing more "execution-oriented" RTE.

  • The quality assurance issue of drug products is more important than the general product because it is highly related to the human health and life. In this reason, the regulatory guide lines have continuously been intensified all around the world. In order to achieve effective quality assurance and real-time product release (RTPR) of drug products, process analytical technology (PAT), which can analyze and control a manufacturing process, has been proposed from the United States. With the PAT process, we can obtain significant process features of materials, quality characteristics and product capabilities from a raw material to the final product in the real-time procedure. PAT can also be utilized to process validation using information system that can analyze the risk of drug products through out an entire product life-cycle. In this paper, we first offered a new concept for the off-line process design methods to prepare the improved quality assurance restrictions and a real-time control method by establishing an information system. We also introduced an automatic inspection system by obtaining surrogate variables based on drug product formulations. Finally, we proposed an advanced PAT concept using validation and feedback principles through out the entire life-cycle of drug product manufacturing processes.

  • Corporate business clusters create a borderless business network through value chains and value creation activities. Clusters in the IT sector are crossing regional boundaries because of their rapid technological development and short product life cycle. To investigate this phenomenon, we examined the value activities of IT companies. As a result, the global expansion of the case companies was limited, but they had business clusters that exceeded the regional boundaries. However, because the order of business clusters is not advanced, value activities are focused on productivity rather than innovation. Given the rapidly evolving nature of IT, it is necessary to evolve into a business cluster that can create new value. Companies must design and implement value-creating processes to develop new technologies or enter new markets, which can lead to cluster growth.   • Purpose - Studies of mechanism as a competitive strategy, a relatively new field in the study of strategic management research, has recently drawn the attention of the business management scholars. The literature has so far proposed the subjective-based view, environment-based view, and the resource-based view in its analyses of firm management. Hence, it is highly likely for the firm management to be reasonably thought of as a combination of and interaction among the three key elements of subject, environment, and resources this is the mechanism-based view (MBV). It is reasonable to consider firm management to be the combination of and interaction among the three key elements of subject, environment, and resources. The overall dynamic process that integrates these three elements and creates functional harmony is identified as the mechanism, the principle of firm management. Much of the extant literatures on MBV has mainly focused on case studies, a qualitative approach prone to subjectivity of the researcher, although the intuition from the study may lead to meaningful insights into a firm-specific mechanism. This study's focus is also on case analysis, but it still attempts a quantitative approach in order to reach a scientific and systematic understanding of the MBV. Research design, data, and methodology - I used both a qualitative and quantitative approach to a single model, given the complexity of the innovation processes. I conducted in-depth interviews with POSCO employees-20 from general management, two from human resources, eight from information technology, five from finance and accounting, and five from production and logistics management. Once the innovative events were selected, the interview results were double-checked by the interviewees themselves to ensure the accuracy of the answers recorded. Based on the interview, I then conducted statistical validation using the survey results as well. Results - This study analyzes the building process of innovation and the effect of the mechanism pattern on innovation by examining the case of POSCO, which has survived over the past 21 years. I apply a new analytical tool to study mechanism innovation types, perform a new classification, and describe the interrelationships among the mechanism factors. This process allows me to see how the "Subject"factor interacts with the other factors. I found that, in the innovation process of the adoption stage, Subject had a mediating effect but that the mediating effect of resource and performance was smaller than the effect of Subject on performance alone. During the implementation stage, the mediating effect of Subject increased. Conclusion - Therefore, I have confirmed that the subject utilizes resources reasonably and efficiently. I have also advanced mechanism studies: whereas the field's research methods have been largely confined to single case studies, I have used both qualitative and quantitative methods to examine the relationships among mechanisms.

The Impact of Entrepreneurial Leadership on Individual Creativity: Moderating Role of Innovation Climate and Mediating Role of Psychological Empowerment (기업가적 리더십이 조직 구성원의 창의성에 미치는 영향: 혁신 분위기의 조절효과 및 심리적 임파워먼트의 매개효과)

  • Previous literatures have provided growing evidence regarding the impact of leadership in enhancing follower creativity. Despite these ample evidences, a noticeable omission in this body of study is entrepreneurial leadership. The present study extends leadership·creativity research by developing a mediation-moderation model and investigating the key roles that innovation climate and psychological empowerment may play in the mechanism between entrepreneurial leadership and followers' individual creativity. Using a data of 161 SME's members, the results show that: (a) followers' psychological empowerment positively mediates the relationship between entrepreneurial leadership and individual creativity; (b) the impact of entrepreneurial leadership on followers' psychological empowerment through innovation climate is high (in other words, innovation climate positively moderates the relationship between entrepreneurial leadership and followers' psychological empowerment). This study gain more comprehensive insight of individual creativity and leader's entrepreneurial leadership, to foster more creative venture organizations. The findings of this study make several important implications to present venture·leadership·creativity knowledge. Future studies should examine a broad range of mediating or moderating processes through which context for innovation effects positively on individual creativity. Therefore, additional study is needed to test if the results of this research can be generalized across industry·firm types.
