Effects of Fin Configuration on the Evaporator Performance (휜 형상에 따른 증발기의 전열 성능)

  • An experimental investigation was made to study the performance characteristics of evaporator having different fin configurations and tube inner grooves. Three different types of fin such as super slitted fin, slitted fin, plain fin, and two types of tube such as inner grooved tube, and bare tube, are tested varying the air velocity, evaporation temperature and superheat of refrigerant. Results show that in the range of air side Reynolds number $3{\times}10^3\;-\;1.5{\times}10^4$ evaporator with super slitted fin and inner grooved tube shows best performance. It is 80% higher in overall heat transfer coefficient and 2.6 times higher in pressure loss compared to that with plain fin inner grooved tube. Friction factor is found to be almost independent of evaporating temperature and degree of superheat, while Colburn j factor varies with evaporating temperature.

  • Natural convection heat transfer in a horizontal annulus from an inner tube with two vertical fins has been studied for the effects of dimensionless fin length and Rayleigh number. The maximum local Nusselt number of inner tube was obtained at .theta. = 145.deg. and that of outer cylinder at .theta. = 0.deg. for the case of $l_{F}$=0.3 Local Nusselt number distributions for the lower fins show higher values than that of the upper fins. The mean Nusselt number of inner tube was increased with the values of dimensionless fin length. The mean Nusselt number can be represented in an exponential function of Grashof number at various fin lengths. As compared with experimental and numerical results, isotherms and local Nusselt number show good agreement.t.

  • An experimental study of the absorption process of water vapor into lithium bromide solution was performed. For the purpose of development of high performance absorption chiller-heater utilizing Lithium Bromide solution as working fluid, the absorber is the most effective to improve the performance of an absorber because it requires the largest heat transfer area in an absorption chiller-heater system. This paper introduces bare tube and inner ribbed notched fin tube for the absorber of absorption chiller-heaters. Inner ribbed notched fin tube has about 10∼20% higher heat and mass transfer performance than bare tube conventionally used in absorbers and the it is expected to perform high heat and mass transfer. This paper will provide important information on the selection of absorber tubes in commercial absorption chill-heaters.

Heat Transfer Characteristics of Fin-Tube Heat Exchanger using Two-Port Tube of Small Inner Diameter by Mechanical Expansion (연결세경관을 이용한 휜관형 열교환기의 기계확관에 의한 전열특성)

  • The fin and tube heat exchanger using a two-port tube has in air-conditioner heat exchanger because heat transfer performance. This study investigates the feasibility of a fin and tube heat exchanger using two-port copper tube by mechanical expansion. The optimum size of the tube-expanding bullet for the heat exchanger using two-port tube was through numerical calculation. The heat exchanger using a two-port tube was fabricated by mechanical expansion, and the heat exchanger performance was evaluated condensation and evaporation experiments. Compared to the heat exchanger of a conventional circular tube, the pressure drop per unit length of the heat exchanger with a two-port tube decreased. Compared to the heat exchanger using a conventional circular tube, the overall heat transfer coefficient of heat exchanger with a two-port tube increased up to 13% in the case of condensation, and up to 25% in the case of evaporation. The two-port tube heat exchanger outperforms conventional heat exchanger for air conditioner with a inner grooved circular tube.

  • The entropy generation rate in a fin-tube heat exchanger is investigated as a basis for thermodynamic optimization associated with single fin-tube heat exchanger. The entropy generation (irreversibility)analysis is used to find the optimum design factor and investigate total entropy generation, optimum dimensions of fin length, tube inner and outer diameters, and fin spacing on the variation of design factors. The results of this study are as follows: As the outer diameter increases, optimum !in spacing and fin length increase but the entropy generation and optimum inner diameter decrease; As fin thickness increases, the entropy generation of system and optimum fin spacing increase; As fin length increases, entropy generation and optimum outer diameter increase.

  • The purpose of this study is a heat transfer coefficient test of evaporator tube in shell and tube heat exchanger by shapes, using R-404A. The experimental apparatus is designed to simulate the real heat transfer rate in one shell and tube heat exchanger. The test section is formed four type tubes that are Inner ridged tube, Corrugated tube, Turbo-C tube, Inner fin tube and shell type is formed by electrical heater. All tests were performed at a fixed refrigerant evaporator temperature at $1.5^{\circ}C,\;-3^{\circ}C$ and with mass fluxes of 29, 25 kg/hr. Heat transfer rate is calculated a enthalpy difference in test section. In experiment, heat transfer coefficient measured one by one and electrical heaters are supplemented by evaporator.

Evaporating heat transfer characteristics of R-22 alternative hydrocarbon refrigerants at heat exchanger using grooved inner tube (내면 핀관을 사용하는 열교환기에서 R-22 대체 탄화수소계 냉매의 증발 열전달 특성)

  • In this paper, evaporation heat transfer characteristics at a inner grooved tube were studied using a new natural refrigerants R-290, R-600a and HCFC refrigerant R-22. Experiments were performed in the inner tube with outside diameter of 12.70mm, having 75 fins with a fin height of 0.25mm. The following results were obtained from this research. On the evaporating heat transfer characteristics, the maximum increment of heat transfer coefficient was found in R-290. Average heat transfer coefficient was obtained the maximum value in R-290 and the minimum value in R-22. It reveals that the natural refrigerant can be used as a substitute for R-22. In the grooved inner tube, 70% of the increment of the heat transfer coefficient was obtained compared to the smooth tube. Comparing the heat transfer coefficient between experimental results and simulation data of other's, the Kandlikar's correlated equation was closely approximated to the author's experimental results in the smooth tube or grooved inner one.

  • Laminar heat transfer experiments were conducted in flat extruded aluminum tubes. Three different flat tubes-two with smooth inner channel, one with micro-finned inner channel-were tested. Smooth tube data were in reasonable agreement with the predictions by simplified theoretical models. The heat transfer coefficients of the micro-fin tube were significantly smaller than those of the smooth tube. The reason was attributed to the decelerating flow in the inter-fin region. Heat transfer correlations were developed from the data.

  • In 2015, a fin tube (Cu-Ni 70/30 alloy) of package type heat exchanger for navy vessel was perforated through the wall which led to refrigerant leakage. This failure occurred after only one year since its installation. In this study, cause of the failure was determined based on available documents, metallographic studies and computational fluid dynamics simulation conducted on this fin tube. The results showed that dimensional gap between inserted plastic tube and inside wall of fin tube is the cause of the swirling turbulent stream of sea water. As a result of combination of swirling turbulence and continuing collision of hard solid particles in sea water, erosion corrosion has begun at the end of inserted plastic tube area. Crevice corrosion followed later in the crevice between the outer wall of plastic tube and inner wall of fin tube. It was found that other remaining tubes also showed the same corrosion phenomena. Thorough inspection and prompt replacement will have to be accomplished for the fin tubes of the same model heat exchanger.

Heat Transfer Characteristics of R-1270 using 12.7mm Inner Fin Tube (12.7mm 내면핀관을 이용한 R-1270의 열전달 특성)

  • This paper deals with the heat transfer characteristics of R-290 (Propane), R-600a (Iso-butane) and R-1270 (Propylene) as an environment friendly refrigerant and R-22 as a HCFC's refrigerant for evaporating. The experimental apparatus has been set-up as conventional vapor compression type refrigeration and air-conditioning system. The test section is a horizontal double pipe heat exchanger. Evaporating heat transfer measurements were performed for smooth tube with the outer diameters of 12.70, 9.52 and 6.35 mm and micro-fin tube 12.70 mm, respectively. For the smooth and micro-fin tubes measured in this study, the evaporating heat transfer coefficient was enhanced according to the increase of the mass flux and decrease of the tube diameter. The local evaporating heat transfer coefficients of hydrocarbon refrigerants were superior to those of R-22 and the maximum increasing rate of heat transfer coefficient was found in R-1270. The average evaporating heat transfer coefficients in hydrocarbon refrigerants showed 20 to 28% higher values than those of R-22. Also, the evaporating heat transfer coefficients of R-22 in the tube diameter of the 12.70 mm smooth and micro-fin tube were compared. Generally, the local heat transfer coefficients for both types of tubes increased with an increase of the mass flux. The heat transfer enhancement factor (EF) between smooth and micro-fin tube varied from 1.9 to 2.7 in all experimental conditions.
