A Study of Heat Transfer during Freezing Process of Water in a Vertical Cylinder. (수직 원통형 축열조내 물의 응고 과정시 열전달에 관한 실험적 연구(작동 유체의 유동방향에 따른 열저장 성능 비교))

  • Heat transfer phenomena during freezing process of the water in a vertical cylinder were experimentally studied. Purified water was inserted into the vertical cylinder Experiment was performed with two conditions ; the inlet temperature of the working fluid was maintained to be -1$0^{\circ}C$ and the direction of the working fluid was to be upward or downward. Both the mean temperature of the liquid and temperature difference of cylinder tube wall in the upward were lower than those in the downward. In addition, shape of ice layer in the upward was more uniform than that in the downward. Finally, time-varying total heat energy stored in the water in the upward was higher than that in the downward.

  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is nowadays a powerful and reliable tool for simulating different flow processes and temperature. CFD is used to analyze the various pot geometries and operative variables in 55% Al-Zn pot of CGL. In this research, different strip velocities were assumed and then shown the flow pattern in the pot that was similar in the different strip velocities. Temperature distribution in the pot depended on inductors and inlet strip temperature at the steady condition. Generation of dross particles and transport models were considered to describe dross particles evolution inside the pot. In order to observe dross influence by scrap location, dross particles were generated upon the sink roll. Floating time of dross particles is different by scraper locations above the sink roll.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the influence on the heating performance for a water-to-water 10RT ground source heat pump by using the water switching and refrigerant switching method. The test of water-to-water ground source heat pump was measured by varying the compressor speed, load side inlet temperature, and ground heat source side temperature. The heating capacity and COP of the heat pump increased with increasing ground heat source temperature. As a result, compared to a refrigerant switching method, the water switching method with counter flow improves the heating capacity and COP by approximately 5% in average, respectively.

  • An analysis procedure for the MCFC channel flow has been developed to predict the fuel cell performance. As for the electrochemical reaction, among several chemical reaction models, one that fits the data best is adopted after a comprehensive comparative study. The Wavier-Stokes, energy, and species equations are solved to obtain the velocity, temperature and concentration fields for a specified average current density. The procedure is iterative as the local current density, or the reaction rate, is allowed to vary with the gas composition. A series of calculations are then carried out to examine the effects of gas flow rate, gas composition, gas usage rate, inlet gas temperature, and average current density on the fuel cell performance. The fuel cell characteristics, such as the temperature, current density distributions, and the concentration fields, for various operating conditions are presented and discussed.

  • The present study has been studied on a thermal and flow characteristic of the microchannel waterblock with flow distributions in each channels. Results of a numerical analysis using the CFX-11 are compared with results of an experiment. Numerical analysis and experiment are conducted under a heat transfer rate of 150W, inlet temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ and mass flow rates of $0.7{\sim}2.0\;kg$/min. Base temperature and pressure drop are investigated with standard deviations of mass flow rates in each channels of samples at 0.7 kg/min.

  • Control algorithms for an absorption air conditioning system may be developed by using dynamic models of the system. The simplified effective dynamic models, which can predict the dynamic behaviors of the system, may help to develop effective control algorithms for the system. In this study, control algorithms for an absorption air conditioning system were developed by using a dynamic simulation program. A cooling water inlet temperature control algorithm, a chilled water outlet temperature control algorithm, and a supply air temperature control algorithm, were developed and analyzed. The steepest descent method was used as an optimal algorithm. Simulation results showed energy savings and the effective controls of an absorption air conditioning system.

A Numerical Study on the Laminar Flow Field and Heat Transfer Coefficient Distribution for Supercritical Water in a Tube

  • Numerical analysis has been carried out to investigate laminar convective heat transfer at zero gravity in a tube for supercritical water near the thermodynamic critical point. Fluid flow and heat transfer are strongly coupled due to large variation of thermodynamic and transport properties such as density, specific heat, viscosity, and thermal conductivity near the critical point. Heat transfer characteristics in the developing region of the tube show transition behavior between liquid-like and gas-like phases with a peak in heat transfer coefficient distribution near the pseudo critical point. The peak of the heat transfer coefficient depends on pressure and wall heat flux rather than inlet temperature and Reynolds number. Results of the modeling provide convective heat transfer characteristics including velocity vectors, temperature, and the properties as well as the heat transfer coefficient. The effect of proximity on the critical point is considered and a heat transfer correlation is suggested for the peak of Nusselt number in the tube.

  • The thermal performance of cooling towers is affected by the temperature of inlet water, wet bulb temperature of entering air add water-air flow rate. In this study, the effects of these variables are simulated using NTU-method and experimentally investigated for the counter-flow cooling towers. The simulation program to evaluate these variables which affect the performance of cooling tower was developed. The maximum errors between the results of simulations and experiments were 3.8% under the standard design conditions and 5.4% under the other conditions. The performance was increased up to 46~50% as the water loading was increased from $6.8m^3$/$hr\cdot m^2$ to $15.9m^3$/$hr\cdot m^2$. The range was reduced up to 56~42% when the wet bulb temperature of the entering air was increased from $22^{\circ}C\; to\; 29^{\circ}C.$

  • This study presents analysis results for the hybrid system combining solid oxide fuel cell and gas turbine. Two different system layouts(an ambient pressure system and pressurized system) are considered and their design performance are comparatively investigated taking into account critical design factor, the most critical parameter such as turbine inlet temperature, gas turbine pressure ratio, temperature difference at the fuel cell and fuel cell operating temperature are considered as design constraints. Performance variations according to system layout and design parameters are examined in energetic view point.

  • The vortex tube is a sample device for separating a compressed gaseous fluid stream into two flows of high and low temperature without any chemical reactions. The phenomena of energy separation through the vortex tube were investigated experimentally, to see the effects of the number of nozzle holes on the energy separation. The experiment was carried out with the number of nozzle holes from 1 to 10 by varying inlet pressure and cold mass fraction. The experimental results were indicated that the effective number of nozzle holes for the best cooling performance was found as 4. Also, to find effective use in a given operation conditions, the temperature difference of cold air and the cooling capacity of vortex tube was compared. The result is that cooling capacity was more important than temperature difference of cold air.
