Study molded part quality of plastic injection process by melt viscosity evaluation

  • A study that demonstrates how to investigate the molded part quality and the consistency of injection process based on the rheological concept is proposed. It is important for plastic material whose melt viscosity is variable with respect to the processing condition. The formulations to couple the melt viscosity with injection pressure and fill time are derived first. Taking calculations of the measured pressure and the time by using these formulations, the melt viscosity in injection process can be determined on machine. As the relation between the injection speed and the melt viscosity is constructed, the influences of the setting parameter of injection machine on the molded part quality can be investigated through evaluating the state of the melt viscosity. In addition, a pressure sensor bushing (PSB) designed with a quick installation feature is also provided and validated. The results show that a higher injection speed improves the tensile strength of the molded part but also the consistency of the molded part quality. This work provides an alternative to evaluate the molding quality scientifically.

초미세 발포 사출 성형 공정에서 성형된 플라스틱의 수축률 측정에 관한 연구 (A Study on Measurement of Shrinkage of Molded Plastics in a Microcellular Foaming Injection Molding Process)

  • Microcellular foaming process was developed at MIT in 1980's to save a quantity of raw materials and improve mechanical properties. There are many process variables in appling microcellular foaming process to the conventional injection molding process. Of all process variables, part dimension control and shrinkage are the most influential on the post molded dimension. The post molding dimensional change of thermoplastic resins is important to tool designers for predicting the specific difference of molded part vs. actual mold cavity. Generally, articles injection molded are smaller in size than the cavity; hence, the term shrinkage factor is used to define the allowance a designer specifies. It is important to consider the factors that influence molded part dimension. According to ASTM Designation: D 955, shrinkage from mold dimensions of molded plastics was measured. In injection molding, the difference between the dimensions of the mold and of the molded article produced therein from a given material may vary according to the design and operation of the mold. In this paper, shrinkage data of molded plastic parts was obtained. It can be an important information for designing optimum mold system in a microcellular foaming injection molding process.

  • The shrinkages of injection molded parts are different in molding operational conditions, resins and additives. The shrinkage of injection molded part for crystalline polymer, PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) has been studied for various operational conditions of injection molding and content of additives. Mica was used as a additive to PBT to examine the part shrinkage according to the mica content. The part shrinkages of mica contained PBT decreased as mica content increases. Higher injection temperature and injection pressure resulted in a lower shrinkage. As mold temperature increases the part shrinkage decreased. The part shrinkage of flow direction was less than that of the perpendicular direction to the flow for both pure and mica contained PBT. However the shrinkage difference between flow and perpendicular to flow directions decreased as mica content increased.

  • Injection mold is a manufacturing process used to produce parts of complicated shape at a low cost. Many factors affect the quality of injection molded part during injection molding process. A study on the optimization of injection mold is progressed by using a simulation software like Moldflow. Filling, packing and cooling phases of injection molding processes are analyzed according to the mold design considering the shrinkage of molded part, the degree of filling rate and the wearing of a mold. Taguchi method is applied to analyze the significance of processing parameters and the dynamic characteristics according to the variation of processing parameters. From the results, the mold temperature and packing pressure influenced strongly the shrinkage of injection molded part.

사출성형된 고분자 블렌드의 형태학적 상구조 예측 (The Prediction of Phase Morphology of Injection Molded Polymer Blends)

  • 사출성형된 고분자 블렌드의 형태학적 상구조를 실험 및 이론적인 방법으로 연구하였다. 실험적인 연구로서, 형태학적 상구조에 미치는 사출속도, 사출온도 효과를 조사하였다. 이를 통하여 고분자 블렌드로 제조된 사출성형품에서 두께 위치에 따른 형태학적 상구조 변화를 뚜렷하게 관찰할 수 있었으며, 사출성형품 표면에 분산상이 가늘고 길게 변형되어있는 스킨층, 그안 쪽에 분산상이 다소 크고 변형이 되어있는 서브스킨층 및 사출성형품의 중심에 위치하고 분산상의 변형이 전혀 없는 코어영역이 존재함을 알 수 있었다. 실험적인 연구 결과를 토대로 고분자 블렌드의 사출과정에서 형성되는 형태학적 상구조를 예측하는 계산 알고리듬을 제시하였다. 상업화된 사출성형 해석용 프로그램에서 얻은 유동장 정보와 유동장에서 분산상의 거동에 관한 이론 및 실험식을 조합하여 사출성형된 고분자 블렌드의 형태학적 상구조를 예측할 수 있었다. 제시된 계산 알고리듬으로 사출온도 및 사출속도에 의한 형태학적 상구조의 변화를 잘 예측할 수 있었다.

유리섬유 강화 폴리카보네이트의 환상형상부품 사출성형시 성형수축에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Part Shrinkage in Injection Molded Annular Shaped Product for Glass Reinforced Polycarbonate)

  • 사출성형에서 성형수축은 피할 수 없는 현상이다. 따라서 성형수축을 줄이기 위한 연구가 필요할 뿐만 아니라 성형수축의 특성을 명확히 파악하는 것이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 유리섬유로 보강된 폴리카보네이트를 이용하여 2.5차원형상인 환상형상의 시편에서 보이는 성형수축 현상을 조사하였다. 환상시편은 외경의 크기와 두께를 달리하여 설계하였다. 성형조건은 수지온도, 보압시간 및 보압크기를 변수로 설정하였다. 여러 성형조건으로 성형된 시편에서 내경과 외경의 크기가 변하는 양상에 대해서 분석하였다. 성형된 시편의 외경과 내경의 치수는 금형의 치수보다 작게 나타났다. 시편의 외경이 클수록, 그리고 시편의 두께가 두꺼울수록 수출율은 작게 나타났다. 또한 게이트의 위치에 따라 수축의 크기가 방향성을 보였다. 따라서 성형된 시편은 원형이 아니라 타원형으로 나타났고 게이트 방향으로 내경과 외경이 가장 큰 수축을 보였다. 수축된 제품의 형상조절을 위해서는 게이트 설계와 같은 금형설계가 중요하다고 판단된다.

유도가열 조건에 따른 사출성형품 웰드부의 강도 고찰 (An investigation into Weldline Strength According to Induction Heating Conditions)

  • Weldlines are generated during the injection molding process when two or more melt flows are brought into contact. At the welded contact region, a 'V'-shaped notch is formed on the surface of the molded part. This 'V'-notch deteriorates not only surface appearance but also mechanical strength of the molded part. To eliminate or reduce weldlines so as to improve the weldline strength, the mold temperature at the corresponding weld locations should be maintained higher than the glass transition temperature of the resin material. The present study implements high-frequency induction heating in order to rapidly raise mold surface temperature without a significant increase in cycle time. This induction heating enables to local mold heating so as to eliminate or reduce weldlines in an injection-molded plastic part. The effect of induction heating conditions on the weldline strength and surface appearance of an injection-molded part is investigated.

성형조건과 수지의 종류에 따른 사출 성형품의 성형 수축 (Shrinkage in Injection molded Part for Operational Conditions and Resins)

  • Shrinkage of injection molded parts is different form operational conditions of injection molding such as injection temperature, injection pressure and mold temperature, and mold design such as gate size. It is also various for different resins which have crystalline structure or not. In this study part shrinkage was investigated for various operational condition and resins; PBT for crystalline polymer, and PC and PMMA for amorphous polymer was used in experiment. Crystalline polymer shows higher part shrinkage by about three times than amorphous polymer. Part shrinkage increased as injection temperature and mold temperature increased and injection pressure decreased. Part shrinkage decreased as gate size increased since the pressure delivery is mush easier for large gate size. Part shrinkage according to the gate location was that the position in the part with close to the gate showed large shrinkage and this phenomenon might be occurred by residual stress.

이성분계 고분자 블렌드의 형태학에 미치는 사출 조건의 영향 (Effect of injection molding conditions on morphology of binary polymer blends)

  • 사출 조건이 이성분계 고분자 블렌드의 형태학에 미치는 영향을 관찰하기 위해 폴리페닐렌옥사이드 (PPO)/폴리아마이드 6 (PA 6) 블렌드를 선정하였다. 두께가 3.2 mm이고 한 변의 길이가 15 cm인 정사각형의 평판 형태의 사출물을 여러 사출 조건에서 제조하고 각 위치별로 파단시편을 제조하여 형태학을 관찰하였다. 그 결과 수지가 스크류, 노즐 스프루 게이트를 지나 최종위치에 자리 잡을 때까지 복잡한 온도, 전단력과 신장력의 영향으로 복잡한 형태학을 가짐을 알 수 있었다.
