Temperate-resident bats exhibit a circadian cycle of torpor and arousal In summer. The physiological role and selective advantage of torpor as an energy saving mechanism have been received much attention by hibernation biologists. However, despite the significance of the recovering euthermic function, the arousal process and mechanism in these animals have been poorly addressed. In this study, we investigated thermogenic and motor activities of a local bat species Murina leucogaster during arousal by simultaneously examining oxygen consumption rate, body temperature ($T_b$) and pectoral electromyography (EMG). We found that Tb of the torpid bats (12-14$^{\circ}C$) was augmented slowly by nonshivering mechanism during the initial awakening phase. The pectoral shivering, gauged by EMG activity, occurred between 17$^{\circ}C$ and 38$^{\circ}C$. Over this Tb range of shivering, heat was produced at a rate of 0.145 kcal $kg^{-1}\;min^{-1}$ to raise 1$^{\circ}C$$T_b$ per min. Shivering was most intensive at 30-35$^{\circ}C$ where both EMG amplitude and spike frequency were the highest. Activation of the pectoral myofibers seemed to be controlled in a manner that motor units were recruited from smaller to larger sizes, with greater synchronization, as muscle shivering became intensive with increasing $T_b$.

The quantity and quality of contents containing information are sharply increasing with the rising network speed. In line with this rapid growth of information volume, a new communication protocol using the chaotic signal that can protect contents in communication is proposed as follows. The chaos system has the characteristic of unpredictability due to the sensitive initial values and the similarity of the signals with noise. We configured two chaos systems $F(X_n,Y_n)$ and $G(A_n,B_n)$ that have such characteristics and designed a data communication method using as encryption channel the same chaos signals generated by synchronizing the chaos system G with the F signals. The proposed method was verified with the encryption and decryption of images. The proposed method is different from the existing encrypted communication methods and is expected to lay the foundation for future studies in related areas.is an example of ABSTRACT format.

In this paper, we propose an automatic generation method of transaction level(TL) model from algorithmic model to verify system specification fast and effectively using virtual platform. The TL virtual platform including structural properties such as timing, synchronization and real-time is one of the effective verification frameworks. However, whenever change system specification or HW/SW mapping, we must rebuild virtual platform and additional design/verification time is required. And the manual description is very time-consuming and error-prone process. To solve these problems, we build TL library which consists of basic components of virtual platform such as CPU, memory, timer. We developed a set of design/verification tools in order to generate a virtual platform automatically. Our tools generate a virtual platform which consists of embedded real-time operating system (RTOS) and hardware components from an algorithmic modeling. And for communication between HW and SW, memory map and device drivers are generated. The effectiveness of our proposed framework has been successfully verified with a Joint Photographic Expert Group (JPEG) and H.264 algorithm. We claim that our approach enables us to generate an application specific virtual platform $100x{\tims}1000x$ faster than manual designs. Also, we can refine an initial platform incrementally to find a better HW/SW mapping. Furthermore, application software can be concurrently designed and optimized as well as RTOS by the generated virtual platform

A Wireless Access for Vehicular Environment (WAVE) system based on Orthogonal frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is made for vehicle to vehicle wireless communications. The physical layer standard of the WAVE system is very similar to that of the IEEE802.1la wireless local area network (WLAN). Therefore, the performance of the WAVE system is degraded by continual timing delay in the WAVE multipath fading channels after starting initial timing synchronization. In this paper, the tracking algorithm that synchronizes symbol timing is proposed to continually compensate additional timing delay. Computer simulation of the proposed algorithm is performed in the worst communication environments that apply to maximum timing delay. Computer simulation shows that the proposed algorithm can improve the system performance in various channel conditions.
In this paper, a simple Carrier Frequency Recovery(CFR) scheme is introduced. In relating the use of consumer-grade equipment and satellite transmission environments, carrier frequency recovery have to recovery a large initial Carrier Frequency Offset(CFO), which is 20% normalized CFO, for DVB-S2 receivers. For these reasons, conventional CFR schemes for DVB-S2 systems need significant hardware complexity. Introduced CFR scheme employs Fitz algorithm for coarse CFR and recovers a coarse CFO accurately, and a simple pilot block correlation algorithm is employed for fine CFR. Introduced scheme reduce the number of multiplication operations by 80% and does not need any additional memory without degrading the achievable performance.

This paper presents packet detection, frequency offset estimation architecture and performance analysis for OFDM-based wireless personal area network (WPAN) systems. Packet detection structure is used to find the start point of a packet exactly in WPAN system as the correlation value passes the constant threshold value. The applied autocorrelation structure of the algorithm can be implemented simply compared to conventional packet detection algorithms. The proposed frequency offset estimation architecture is designed for phase rotation process structure, internal bit reduction to reduce hardware size and the frequency offset adjustment block to reduce look-up table size unlike the conventional structure. If the received signal can be compensated by estimated frequency offset through the correction block, it can reduce the impact on the frequency offset. Through the performance result, the proposed structure has lower hardware complexity and gate count compared to the conventional structure. Thus, the proposed structure for OFDM-based WPAN systems can be applied to the initial synchronization process and high-speed low-power WPAN chips.

The 3-step cell search has been considered for fast acquisition of the scrambling code unique to a cell in the W -CDMA system. In this paper, the performance of the cell search scheme is analyzed in Rayleigh fading channels. And the system parameters for cell search scheme and the design parameters for the receivers are examined. The probabilities of detection, miss and false alarm for each step are derived in closed forms based on the statistics of CDMA noncoherent demodulator output. Through the analysis, the effect of threshold setting and post detection integration for each step is investigated, and the optimal values of the power allocation for the synchronization channels are also considered. The number of post-detection integrations for each step is a design parameter for the receiver, and the optimum values may depend on not only the power allocation for each channel related to the cell search, but the false alarm penalty time. It is shown that optimal values could be determined through the analysis. Also, the cumulative probability distribution of the average cell search time is obtained.

In this paper, we suggest an architecture of DS/CDMA tranceiver composed of one pilot channel used as reference and multiple traffic channels. The pilot channel-an unmodulated PN code-is used as the reference signal for synchronization of PN code and data demondulation. The coherent demodulation architecture is also exploited for the reverse link as well as for the forward link. Here are the characteristics of the suggested DS/CDMA system. First, we suggest an interlaced quadrature spreading(IQS) method. In this method, the PN coe for I-phase 1st channel is used for Q-phase 2nd channels and the PN code for Q-phase 1st channel is used for I-phase 2nd channel, and so on-which is quite different from the eisting spreading schemes of DS/CDMA systems, such as IS-95 digital CDMA cellular or W-CDMA for PCS. By doing IQS spreading, we can drastically reduce the zero crossing rate of the RF signals. Second, we introduce an adaptive threshold setting for the synchronization of PN code, an initial acquistion method that uses a single PN code generator and reduces the acquistion time by a half compared the existing ones, and exploit the state machines to reduce the reacquistion time Third, various kinds of functions, such as automatic frequency control(AFC), automatic level control(ALC), bit-error-rate(BER) estimator, and spectral shaping for reducing the adjacent channel interference, are introduced to improve the system performance. Fourth, we designed and implemented the DS/CDMA MODEM to be used for variable transmission rate applications-from 16Kbps to 1.024Mbps. We developed and confirmed the DS/CDMA MODEM architecture through mathematical analysis and various kind of simulations. The ASIC design was done using VHDL coding and synthesis. To cope with several different kinds of applications, we developed transmitter and receiver ASICs separately. While a single transmitter or receiver ASC contains three channels (one for the pilot and the others for the traffic channels), by combining several transmitter ASICs, we can expand the number of channels up to 64. The ASICs are now under use for implementing a line-of-sight (LOS) radio equipment.
As jet lag of modern travel continues to spread, there has been an exponential growth in popular explanations of jet lag and recommendations for curing it. Some of this attention are misdirected, and many of those suggested solutions are misinformed. The author reviewed the basic science of jet lag and its practical outcome. The jet lag symptoms stemed from several factors, including high-altitude flying, lag effect, and sleep loss before departure and on the aircraft, especially during night flight. Jet lag has three major components; including external de synchronization, internal desynchronization, and sleep loss. Although external de synchronization is the major culprit, it is not at all uncommon for travelers to experience difficulty falling asleep or remaining asleep because of gastrointestinal distress, uncooperative bladders, or nagging headaches. Such unwanted intrusions most likely to reflect the general influence of internal desynchronization. From the free-running subjects, the data has revealed that sleep tendency, sleepiness, the spontaneous duration of sleep, and REM sleep propensity, each varied markedly with the endogenous circadian phase of the temperature cycle, despite the facts that the average period of the sleep-wake cycle is different from that of the temperature cycle under these conditions. However, whereas the first ocurrence of slow wave sleep is usually associated with a fall in temperature, the amount of SWS is determined primarily by the length of prior wakefulness and not by circadian phase. Another factor to be considered for flight in either direction is the amount of prior sleep loss or time awake. An increase in sleep loss or time awake would be expected to reduce initial sleep latency and enhance the amount of SWS. By combining what we now know about the circadian characteristics of sleep and homeostatic process, many of the diverse findings about sleep after transmeridian flight can be explained. The severity of jet lag is directly related to two major variables that determine the reaction of the circadian system to any transmeridian flight, eg., the direction of flight, and the number of time zones crossed. Remaining factor is individual differences in resynchmization. After a long flight, the circadian timing system and homeostatic process can combine with each other to produce a considerable reduction in well-being. The author suggested that by being exposed to local zeit-gebers and by being awake sufficient to get sleep until the night, sleep improves rapidly with resynchronization following time zone change.
Regional differences in economic importance of the four species of rice leafhoppers, viz., Laodelphax striatellus, Nephotettix cincticeps, Nilaparvata Iugens and Sogatella furcifera, were analyzed and discussed based on population surveys conducted in Suweon and in southern and south-western coastal areas. The economic importance of L. striatellus and N. cincticeps, which are found throughout the year in Korea, seems to be less in middle regions. This is believed due to effective natural control through severe winter climate, cultural practices in rice and barley growing, and natural enemies such as spiders. However, the economic importance of these two species is significantly greater in southern regions with a less severe winter climate, and where cultural practices in rice and barley favour synchronization between the life cycles of insects and the seasonal succession of host plants. with regard to N. lugens and S. furcifera, which cannot overwinter in Korea, initial populations are the result of long distance migration across the East China Sea. Weather elements related to their migration result in more abundant immigrants of these two species in southern than in middle regions. Thus, different policies are needed for the integrated control of rice leafhoppers in middle and southern Korea.
