  • One of the difficulties in using the current Boolean-based information retrieval systems is that it is hard for a user, especially a novice, to formulate an effective Boolean query. One solution to this problem is to let the system formulate a query for a user from his relevance feedback documents in this research, an intelligent query reformulation mechanism based on ID3 is proposed and the sensitivity of its retrieval effectiveness, i.e., recall, precision, and E-measure, to various input settings is analyzed. The parameters in the input settings is the number of relevant documents. Experiments conducted on the test set of Medlars revealed that the effectiveness of the proposed system is in fact sensitive to the number of the initial relevant documents. The case with two or more initial relevant documents outperformed the case with one initial relevant document with statistical significances. It is our conclusion that formulation of an effective query in the proposed system requires at least two relevant documents in its initial input set.

  • Cooperative query answering provides neighborhood or associate information relevant to the initial query using the knowledge about the query and data. In this paper, we present an intelligent query answering system for suporting cooperative query answering system presented in this paper performs query relaxation process using hybrid knowledge base. The hybrid knowledge base which is used for relaxation of queries, composes of semantic list and rule based knowledge base for structural approach. Futhermore, this paper proposes the query relaxation algorithm for query reformulation using initial query on the basis of hybrid knowledge base.

  • Without detailed exact knowledge of a retrieval collection, most users find it difficult to formulate effective queries. A method to overcome this difficulty is to use query expansion that reformulates better query from initial query. In this paper we propose concept based query evaluation method using concept of class that retrieved from initial query.

  • Without detailed exact knowledge of a retrieval collection, most users find it difficult to formulate effective queries. In fact, most users may spend large amount of time formulating queries in order to obtain their desired result. A method to overcome this difficulty is to use query expansion that reformulates better query from initial query. In this paper we propose concept based query evaluation method using concept of class that retrieved from initial query. This concept is expanded through thesaurus. For efficiency evaluation of query expansion, we defined most critical value through a simulation and compared precision and recall each other.

  • We propose, in this paper, a new query expansion technique with term reweighting. All terms in the documents feedbacked from a user, excluding stopwords, are selected as candidate terms for query expansion and reweighted using the relevance degree which is calculated from the term-distribution similarity between a candidate term and each term in initial query. The term-distribution similarity of two terms is a measure on how similar their occurrence distributions in relevant documents are. The terms to be actually expanded are selected using the relevance degree and combined with initial query to construct an expanded query. We use KT-set 1.0 and KT-set 2.0 to evaluate performance and compare our method with two methods, one with no relevance feedback and the other with Dec-Hi method which is similar to our method. based on recall and precision.

  • Pre-retrieval query formulation is an important step for identifying local text reuse. Local reuse with high obfuscation, paraphrasing, and translation poses a challenge of finding the reused text in a document. In this paper, three pre-retrieval query formulation strategies for heuristic retrieval in case of low obfuscated, high obfuscated, and translated text are studied. The strategies used are (a) Query formulation using proper nouns; (b) Query formulation using unique words (Hapax); and (c) Query formulation using most frequent words. Whereas in case of low and high obfuscation and simulated paraphrasing, keywords with Hapax proved to be slightly more efficient, initial results indicate that the simple strategy of query formulation using proper nouns gives promising results and may prove better in reducing the size of the corpus for post processing, for identifying local text reuse in case of obfuscated and translated text reuse.

  • Character images for the background screen of cell phones are one of the fast growing sectors of the mobile content market. However, character image buyers currently experience tremendous difficulties in searching for desired images due to the awkward image search process. Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) widely used for image retrieval could be a good candidate as a solution to this problem, but it needs to overcome the limitation of the mobile Internet environment where an initial query set (IQS) cannot be easily provided as in the PC-based environment. We propose a new approach, IQS-AutoGen, which automatically generates an initial query set for CBIR on the mobile Internet. The approach applies the collaborative filtering (CF), a well-known recommendation technique, to the CBIR process by using users' preference information collected during the relevance feedback process of CBIR. The results of the experiment using a PC-based prototype system show that the proposed approach successfully satisfies the initial query requirement of CBIR in the mobile Internet environment, thereby outperforming the current image search process on the mobile Internet.

  • In Gen-2 RFID system, the initial value of $Q_{fp}$, which is the slot-count parameter of Q-algorithm, is not defined in the standard. In this case, if the number of tags within the reader's identification range is small and we let the initial $Q_{fp}$ be large, the number of empty slot will be large. On the other hand, if we let the initial $Q_{fp}$ be small in spite of many tags, almost all the slots will be collided. As a result, the performance will be declined because the frame size does not converge to the optimal point quickly during the query round. In this paper, we propose a scheme to allocate the optimal initial $Q_{fp}$ through the tag number estimation before the query round begins. Through computer simulations, it is demonstrated that the proposed scheme achieves more stable performance than Gen-2 Q-algorithm.

  • In Gen-2 Q-algorithm, the value of initial $Q_{fp}$ and weight C is not defined in the standard. If we let the initial $Q_{fp}$ be large or small, the number of empty slot will be large during the initial query round or almost all the slots will be collided, respectively. Also, if the reader selects an inappropriate weight, there are a lot of empty or collided slots. As a result, it is anticipated that the performance will be declined because the frame size does not converge to the optimal point quickly during the query round. In this paper, we analyze how the performances of Gen-2 Q-algorithm will be affected by the weight and initial slot-count size.

  • In this paper, we propose a spatial query processor, SQUERY, which can derive rich query results through spatial reasoning on the initial knowledge base, as well as, process both qualitative and quantitative queries about the topological and directional relationships between spatial objects. In order to derive richer query results, the query processor expands the knowledge base by applying forward spatial reasoning into the initial knowledge base in a preprocessing step. The proposed query processor uses not only qualitative spatial knowledge describing topological/directional relationship between spatial objects, but also utilizes quantitative spatial knowledge including geometric data of individual spatial objects through geometric computation. The results of an experiment with the OSM(Open Street Map) spatial knowledge base demonstrates the high performance of our spatial query processing system.
