  • For the homogeneous dispersion of $ZrO_2$ particles in $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$ceramics, Zr-precusors were mixed with oxide $Al_2O_3$powders by chemical routes such as partial precipitation or partial polymerization of Zr-nitrate solutions. In case of the mechanical mixing of ultrafine $Al_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$ oxide powders, relatively homogeneous dispersion was difficult to achieve so that the particle size and distributions of $ZrO_2$ were relatively inhomogeneous after sintering at high temperature. But when the Zr-Y-hydroxide were co-precipitated to ultrafine $Al_2O_3$ oxide powders followed by calcinations, homogeneous dispersion of nano-sized $ZrO_2$ particles in $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$ composite ceramics were obtained. But because of the coalescence of dispersed $ZrO_2$ particles, dispersed $ZrO_2$ was grown up to more than 0.2${mu}m$ (200 nm) when sintered at the temperature of higher than $1500^{\circ}C$ But when the sintering temperature was kept to lower than $1400^{\circ}C$ by using nano-sized $\alpha-alumina$, the particle size of dispersed $ZrO_2$ could be sustained below 0.1 ${\mu}m$. But the coalescence of dispersed $ZrO_2$ between $Al_2O_3$ particles could not be avoided so that the mechanical properties were not enhanced contrary to the expectations. So Zr-polyester precursors were precipitated and coated to the surface of ultrafine $\alpha-alumina$ powders by the polymerization of Ethylene Glycol with Citric Acid and Zirconium Nitrate. By this dispersion much more uniform dispersion of $ZrO_2$ was achieved at $1450\~1600^{\circ}C$ of sintering temperature ranges. And due to especially discrete dispersion of $ZrO_2$ between $Al_2O_3$ particles, their mechanical strength was more enhanced than mechanical mixing or hydroxide precipitation methods.

  • The constituent phases in Ti($C_{0.7}N_{0.3}$)-xWC-20Ni (wt%, x=5, 15, 25) cermets were characterized using nanoindentation in conjunction with observation of microstructure. The microstructure of cermet is composed of hard phase and binder phase, which gave rise to a wide range of hardness distribution when nanoindentation was carried out on the polished surface of cermets. Because of the inhomogeneous nature of cermet microstructure, observation of indented surface was indispensable in order to separate the hardness of each constituent phase. The measured values of hardness using nanoindentation were ${\sim}14\;GPa$ for the binder phase and ${\sim}24$ to 28 GPa for the hard phase, of which nanoindentation hardness was decreased with the addition of WC into Ti($C_{0.7}N_{0.3}$)-Ni system. In addition, the nanoindentation hardness of Ni binder phase was much higher than reported Vickers hardness, which could result from confined deformation of binder phase due to the surrounding hard phase particles.

  • The rock fracturing during waterjet cutting is very complicated because rock is inhomogeneous and anisotropic, compared with artificial materials (e.g., metal or glass). Thus, it is very important to verify the effects of rock properties on waterjet rock cutting performance. Properties affecting the rock cutting efficiency have been variously described in the literature, depending on the experimental conditions (e.g., water pressure, abrasive feed rate, or standoff distance) and rock-types studied. In this study, a rock-property-related literature review was performed to determine the key properties important for waterjet rock cutting. Porosity, uniaxial compressive strength, and hardness of the rock were determined to be the key properties affecting waterjet rock cutting. The results of this analysis can provide the basic knowledge to determine the cutting efficiency of waterjet rock cutting technology for rock excavation-related construction.

  • The effect of the surface treatments on the high temperature properties of the Inconel 617, one of the promising candidate alloys for high temperature heat-transport system, has been studied. Various surface modification methods including a rapid thermal process(RTP), a hydrothermal treatment, and a physical vapor deposition($2{\mu}m$ thick TiAlN film by an arc discharge) were applied to the Inconel 617. The morphological and the structural properties of the surface-modified Inconel 617 samples after heat treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$ in the air were compared to find out whether inhomogeneous formation of $Cr_2O_3$ crust at the surface region was suppressed or not. TiAlN-coated Inconel 617 showed homogeneous microstructure and the lowest wear loss compared to bare, RTP- and hydrothermally-treated Inconel 617 by suppressing the $Cr_2O_3$ crust formation.

  • In this study, CFRP and metal or nonmetal were bonded with adhesive and the fracture study on this material was carried out. CFRP at the upper side of specimen and metal or nonmetal were assigned at the lower side of specimen by using DCB specimen as the analysis condition. And it was desribed that the structural adhesive were bonded between both upper and lower sides. As this analysis result, the least equivalent stress was shown at the specimen bonded with aluminium. The maximum shear stress was shown to become lowest at the de-bonded CFRP specimen when titanium was used. In conclusion, it was shown that the deformation of specimen became lowest when titanium was used. On the basis of this study result, the esthetic sense can be shown as the fracture data of bonded interface using adhesive are grafted onto the real life.

  • The 22%Cr-5%Ni-3%Mo duplex and 18%Cr-8%Ni austenitic stainless steels have been nitrogen permeated under the $1Kg/cm^2$ nitrogen gas atmosphere at the temperature range of $1050^{\circ}C{\sim}1150^{\circ}C$. The nitrogen-permeated duplex and austenitic stainless steels showed the gradual decrease in hardness with increasing depth below surface. The duplex stainless steel showed nitrogen pearlite at the outmost surface and austenite single phase in the center after nitrogen permeation treatment, while the obvious microstructural change was not observed for the nitrogen-permeated austenitic stainless steel. After solution annealing the nitrogen-permeated stainless steels(NPSA treatment) at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours, the hardness of the duplex and austenitic stainless steels was constant through the 2 mm thickness of the specimen, and the ${\alpha}+{\gamma}$ phase of duplex stainless steel changed to austenite single phase. Tensile strengths and elongations of the NPSA-treated duplex stainless steel remarkably increased compared to those of solution annealed (SA) duplex stainless steel due to the solution strengthening effect of nitrogen and the phase change from a mixture of ferrite and austenite to austenite single phase, while the NP-treated austenitic stainless steel displayed the lowest value in elongation due to inhomogeneous deformation by the hardness difference between surface and interior.

  • Lots of various utilities are buried under the surface. The effective management of underground utilities is becoming the very important subject for the harmonious administration of the city. Ground Penetrating Radar(GPR) survey including other various underground survey methods, is mainly used to detect the position and depth of buried underground utilities. However, GPR is not applicable, under the circumstances of shallow depth and places, where subsurface materials are inhomogeneous and are composed of clay, salt and gravels. The aim of this study is to overcome these limitations of GPR and other underground surveys. High-frequency electromagnetic (HFEM) method is developed for the non-destructive precise deep surveying of underground utilities. The method is applied in the site where current underground surveys are useless to detect the underground big pipes, because of poor geotechnical environment. As a result, HFEM survey was very successful in detecting the buried shallow and deep underground pipes and in obtaining the geotechnical information, although other underground surveys including GPR were not applicable. Therefore this method is a promising new technique in the lots of fields, such as underground surveying and archaeology.

  • In the fabrication process of Fe-based amorphous alloy powder cores by pulverization of the melt-spun ribbons and cold compaction, the effects of powder preparation method on the magnetic & electric properties, powder shapes and microstructure of cores have been investigated. The powder cores made by using rotor mill showed low effective permeability as compared to the cores prepared by ball milling. However the frequency dependence and quality factor properties were superior in the case of rotor-milling. Further the powders prepared by rotor mill had homogeneous and round shapes through strong shearing in the sieve ring, while the ball milled powders were inhomogeneous and relatively small. The lower permeability of the powder cores fabricated with rotor mill was considered to be due to the high internal stress occurred by very intensive shearing. Moreover the powder cores produced by rotor-milling showed lower core loss and good frequency dependence of effective permeability possibly due to the higher electrical insulation between magnetic particles. The dc bias property of the powder cores made by rotor-milling was better than the one by ball-milling.

  • In this study, hydroxypropyl methylcelluloses (HPMCs) were added to prepare the rice noodle and the effects of water dosage, HPMC content, and viscosity level of HPMC on the noodle-making properties of rice dough were examined. As the water dosage was increased, the rice dough after roller pass became more flat and homogeneous. However, when the water dosage was over a certain range, the rice noodle became more waved. In the test result of various HPMC contents, 3% HPMC addition was turned out to be an optimum condition for the best noodle-making properties of rice dough. As the viscosity level of HPMC decreased, the rice dough after roller pass became inhomogeneous. However, the lowest viscosity level HPMC (PMC 40H) did not show any waved rice noodle at even high water dosage indicating the improved noodle-making properties of rice dough. On the whole, it seems that 56~58% water dosage, 3% HPMC content, and high viscosity HPMC (PMC60U) were the optimum condition for preparation of good rice noodle.

  • Paper sludge Ash (PA) and Fly Ash (FA) wastes are usually land-filled for reclamation or substituted for cements as a resource. It could also offer some advantages when they are substituted for clay to preserve the environment. To recycle those wastes, the sintered specimen made of PA-FA-Clay system were examined to find the microstructure and physical properties. The ratio of clay to wastes was fixed as 30:70 by wt%, while PA to FA within waste portion were varied in the range of $1:6{\sim}7:0$. Those specimens were fired in $1150{\sim}1350^{\circ}C$. It was found that the relative density of sintered specimen was increased with amount of PA added at low sintering temperature (i.e, $1150{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$). This is due to increased amount of liquid during sintering. It is shown, however that at high sintering temperature ($1250{\sim}1350^{\circ}C$), the relative density of specimens was decreased with amount of PA added. This is because of overfiring phenomenon which may be able to induce an inhomogeneous microstructure and increased porosity. The mechanical properties of sintered specimen were depended upon the homogeneity of microstructure in accordance with SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and pore size distribution analysis. For example, the compressive strength of 10PA-60FA-30Clay specimen sintered at $1225^{\circ}C$ was twice higher than that of 70PA-30Clay specimen even thought the relative density of those specimen was similar. This decreased strength of 70PA-30Clay specimen appears to be an inhomogeneity of microstructure due to overfiring.
