  • A phage technique for detection of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri, a causal bacterium of canker on Sastuma mandarin fruits was developed. Phage and ELISA techniques were compared for their sensitivity for detection of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri on orange fruits. Both of techniques revealed a similar efficiency for the bacterial detection; the pathogenic bacteria were observed in pellet from the fruits with over one canker spot with below 2 mm in diameter. In field assays, the increase of phage population(120%) on surface of the fruits related to the disease development one month later indicated that the bacterial pathogens inhabit on the surface. The procedure will be effectively used for detection of only living bacterial pathogen on fruit surfaces of Satsuma mandarin and for the disease forecasting.

  • Natural disturbances and human development can cause habitat fragmentation. Plant and wildlife can become isolated, and habitat fragmentation and shrinkage have been recognized as a key issue facing the conservation of biological diversity. However, eco-corridors can alleviate the problem by providing linkages between isolated patches. The purpose of this study is to plan the eco-corridor for connecting urban forest via the urban stream with low cost and to restore the ecosystem. The results were as follows (1) Falco subbuteo, and Dryocopus martius inhabit in the study site. They are protected species designated by Korean Ministry of Environment. Thus the study site should be preserved as urban wildlife habitat species biodiversity (2) If the biodiversity of the study site is maintained properly, the eco-corridor can be constructed with low cost.

  • This study deals with the expressive characteristics of Installation Art and their applicability to environmental design, and as such, aims to specify a artistic methods from the contemporary art. What Installation Art is search of in their works is "the state of relationships" which is "to replace the concept of form with that of structure, and the concept of space with that of the environment" that is, the terms of relations in the overall environment of time and space. Installation Art essentially relies on a multiplicity of forms and attitudes leading to projects which positively make use of "spatial-temporal process" to reaffirm and "problematise" their open-endedness manifest in complex contextuality and shifting temporality. This study presents a new interpretation of spatial-temporal dimension, site-specificity, and intermedia art that we find in Installation Art and tries to combine that new artistic insight a with environmental design to provide a basis for integrated art. This study places a great emphasis on the interdisciplinary approaches to the environment we inhabit, which I hope will contribute to generating a greater number of creative possibilities for environmental design.

  • In the course of flora analysis of soil Archaea, we found very strange 16S rDNA clones, which could possibly constitute a sister clade from known two archael, Crenarchaeota and Euryarchaeota, lineages. Overall signature sequences showed that the clones were closely related to domains Archaea and Eucarya. However, at least nine nucleotides distinguished the novel clones from domains Archaea and Eucarya. Phylogenetic trees drawn by maximum parsimony, neighbor joining and maximum likelihood methods also showed unique phylogenetic position of the clones. A very specific primer set was synthesized to detect the presence of the novel group of organisms in terrestrial environments. A specific DNA fragment was amplified from all of paddy soil DNAs, and this fact suggests that the novel organisms inhabit paddy soils.

  • A biofilm is a community of microbes that typically inhabit on surfaces and are encased in an extracellular matrix. Biofilms display very dissimilar characteristics to their planktonic counterparts. Biofilms are ubiquitous in the environment and influence our lives tremendously in both positive and negative ways. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a bacterium known to produce robust biofilms. P. aeruginosa biofilms cause severe problems in immunocompromised patients, including those with cystic fibrosis or wound infection. Moreover, the unique biofilm properties further complicate the eradication of the biofilm infection, leading to the development of chronic infections. In this review, we discuss the history of biofilm research and general characteristics of bacterial biofilms. Then, distinct features pertaining to each stage of P. aeruginosa biofilm development are highlighted. Furthermore, infections caused by biofilms on their own or in association with other bacterial species (i.e., multispecies biofilms) are discussed in detail.

  • This paper describe the performance of seawater purification, to which living organisms can adapt, and the physical properties of porous concrete with continuous void. Although conventional concrete has been regarded as a destroyer of nature, seawater and air can pass freely through concrete when it is made porous by forming continuous void. This not only enables plants to vegetables, but also makes it possible for microscopic animals and plants, including bacteria, to attach to and inhabit uneven surface as well as internal voids when the concrete is provided in a natural seawater area or seawater side area. As a result, porous concrete using recycled aggregate improved the performance of seawater purification. In this study, The performance of seawater purification of porous concrete using recycled aggregate analyzed by T-P, T-N.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the spacial boundary in Kazuyo Sejima's housing architecture, to give attention to contemporary housing architecture that we inhabit, and to escape from existing architectural concepts. This study seeks to the meaning and possibility of the spacial boundary on the basis of contemporary architecture. The spacial boundary can be studied in the aspect of architectural space that molds human experience and perception. As a result of this study, three properties in the spacial boundary are revealed. One property of the spacial boundary is soft that protect privacy from gaze of exterior. Another property is that communication that changes according to material of boundary and its experience of observer. The other property is to have uncertainty by compound of programs and material-mixing senses including its perception. This results means that the spacial boundary as interface which is represent our everyday life in the contemporary housing architecture.

  • The Nannophya species in Korea was thought to consist of only Nannophya pygmaea. Previous studies on the species, including life history and development, conservation and restoration, habitat characteristics, genetic studies, distribution, behavior, and taxonomy have been conducted. However, a new Nannophya species, Nannophya koreana, was recently discovered in Korea. Moreover, this new species was found to inhabit both Korea and Japan. Thus, the previous studies should be reevaluated in relation to the new species, Nannophya koreana, and the latter should be treated as an endangered species worldwide given the current population instability.

  • A taxonomic study of the Korean Hydrochus Leach is presented. They inhabit in the margins of shallow lentic water with plentiful vegetation. The genus Hydrochus Leach contains about 28 species in the Palaearctic region and only H. japonicus Sharp is recently listed in Korea. Here, two species are recognized, one of which is reported for the first time in Korea (H. chubu Balfour-Browne & Sat$\hat{o}$). This species are distinguished from H. aequalis Sharp by impressed pronotum and from H. japonicus by dark brown elytra. Habitus photographs, descriptions, and diagnostic characters with illustrations of the species are provided.

  • Mating behaviour of the gammarid amphipod, Hyale rubra, was observed. H. rubra displayed precopulatory mate guarding: males clasped females with their gnathopods during copulation, forming a pair. Males also participated in embryo care during the incubation period. The population was small, and the sex ratio was almost equal. Energy allocation for mating effort and parental effort in the two sexes appear to be almost equal. The mating system was sequentially polygamous (or promiscuous) and there was conspicuous sexual dimorphism in the size of the gnathopod, which was used for mate guarding. However, there appears to be relatively weak sexual competition for mating opportunities despite conspicuous sexual dimorphism. H. rubra did not display territorial competition or external fertilization. Nevertheless, the male provided paternal care. Since H. rubra inhabit tide pools and live on algae, the polygamous mating system of the species can be explained by the polygyny threshold model. The evolution of mate guarding and parental care may have been favored by the species' low population density and harsh environments, an interpretation consistent with the optimality model.
