This work was conducted to evaluate the effect of dilute sodium hydroxide (NaOH) on barley straw at boiling temperature and fractionation of its biomass components into lignin, hemicellulose, and reducing sugars. To this end, various concentrations of NaOH (0.5% to 2%) were applied for pretreatment of barley straw at $105^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy studies revealed that 2% NaOH-pretreated barley straw exposed cellulose fibers on which surface granules were abolished due to comprehensive removal of lignin and hemicellulose. The X-ray diffractometer (XRD) result showed that the crystalline index was increased with increased concentration of NaOH and found a maximum 71.5% for 2% NaOH-pretreated sample. The maximum removal of lignin and hemicellulose was 84.8% and 79.5% from 2% NaOH-pretreated liquor, respectively. Reducing sugar yield was 86.5% from 2% NaOH-pretreated sample using an enzyme dose containing 20 FPU of cellulase, 40 IU of ${\beta}$-glucosidase, and 4 FXU of xylanase/g substrate. The results of this study suggest that it is possible to produce the bioethanol precursor from barley straw using 2% NaOH at boiling temperature.

Organic polymer dielectric thin films of styrene and vinyl acetate were prepared by the plasma polymerization deposition technique and applied for the fabrication of an organic thin film transistor device. The structural properties of the plasma polymerized thin films were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and contact angle measurement. Investigation of the electrical properties of the plasma polymerized thin films was carried out by capacitance-voltage and current-voltage measurements. The organic thin film transistor device with gate dielectric of the plasma polymerized thin film revealed a low operation voltage of −10V and a low threshold voltage of −3V. It was confirmed that plasma polymerized thin films of styrene and vinyl acetate could be applied to functional organic thin film transistor devices as the gate dielectric.

The Indium modified mesoporous zeolite AlMCM-41 were synthesized by hydrothermal method and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) techniques. The Knoevenagel condensation of aldehyde with malononitrile or ethyl cyanoacetate was carried out at reflux condition in ethanol by using heterogeneous In/AlMCM-41 catalyst. This method is fast, efficient, easy work-up and eco-friendly to afford the corresponding Knoevenagel adducts. The catalyst was recovered and reused for several cycles with consistent activity.
Chemically stable Polyvinylidene fluoride-hexa-fluoropropane (PVDF-HFP) copolymer asymmetric membranes were prepared by the conventional phase inversion process, using Dimethyacetamide (DMAc) as a solvent and water as a non-solvent. To control the pore size and porosity of the PVDF-HFP membranes, tetra-ethoxysilane (TEOS) was used as a pore-forming agent. The prepared membranes were characterized, using several analytical methods such as Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA), Field Emission Scanning Electronic Microscopy (FESEM). TEOS turned out to increase porosity and make homogeneous pores on the membranes. Depending on the composition of the dope solutions, the pore size was ranged from 0.1 to 1.0 ${\mu}m$. The flux of the PVDF-HFP membranes prepared by using TEOS as a pore forming agent was increased substantially without much decrease in the rejection. When 15 wt% PVDF-HFP solution was blended with 13 wt% TEOS solution at composition ratio of 70/30 in wt%, the water flux at 2 bars was about 2 $m^3/m^2day$.

We characterize a flexible self-assembled liquid crystal display (LCD) fabricated from a polyimide (PI) alignment layer with polydimethylsiloxane pixel walls. Ion beam (IB) irradiation aligned LC molecules in the PI layer and bonded two flexible plastic substrates in a one-step assembly of the pixel walls. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy provided chemical and physical evidence for the formation of stable chemical bonds between the PI layer and the PDMS pixel walls in addition to the important maintenance of a uniform 6 um gap between the two substrates without the use of any epoxy resins or other polymers.
We have synthesized gold nanoparticles (GNPs) using chicken feathers (poultry waste) and Bacillus subtilis RSE163. Disulfide reductase and keratinase produced by Bacillus subtilis during the degradation of chicken feather has been used to reduce Au3+ from HAuCl4 precursor to produce gold nanoparticles. The synthesized biogenic GNPs were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and zeta potential measurements. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy indicated the presence of protein capping on synthesized GNPs, imparting multifunctionality to the GNP surface. Furthermore, the nontoxic nature of biogenic GNPs was insured by interaction with Escherichia coli (ATCC11103), where TEM images and enhancement of growth rate of E. coli in log phase signified their nontoxic nature. The results indicate that the synthesis of biocompatible GNPs using poultry waste may find potential applications in drug delivery and sensing.
Well-defined, monodispersed hollow ZnO nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by a facile one-pot solution method at room temperature. Hollow ZnO nanoparticles were fabricated using polystyrene nanoparticles as seed particles. The removal of core particles via solvent extraction yields hollow nanoparticles. The structures and morphologies of the obtained products were characterized with Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The formation mechanism of the hollow structure of the ZnO nanoparticles was also investigated. The technique developed here is expected to be useful in the preparation other metal oxides and hollow architectures.

Carbon nitride films have been deposited on Si(100) substrate by a high voltage discharge plasma combined with laser ablation in a nitrogen atmosphere. The films were grown both with the without the presence of an assisting focused Nd:YAG laser ablation. The laser ablation of the graphite target leads to vapor plume plasma expending into th ambient nitrogen arc discharge area. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy were used to identify the binding structure and the content of the nitrogen species in the deposited films. The nitrogen content of the films was found to increase drastically with an increase of nitrogen pressure. The surface morphology of the films was studied using a scanning electron microscopy. Data of infrared spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicate the existence of carbon-nitrogen bonds in the films. The x-ray diffraction measurements have also been taken to characterize the crystal properties of the obtained films.
In this work immobilization technique of enzymes onto the magnetic nanoparticles has been developed for biochip applications. Glucose oxidase and lactate dehydrogenase were immobilized on magnetic nanoparticles via cyanamide and glutaraldehyde. Immobilized enzymes had good operational and storage stability The immobilized glucose oxidase and lactate dehydrogenase were characterized by some factors(pH, temperature, and components of buffer solution etc) which affect the activity, In order to characterize the magnetic nanoparticles, we have used transmission electron microscopy(TEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Fourier transform infrared(FTIR).
The tension behavior of Nicalon/CAS glass-ceramic matrix composites was investigated. Infrared (IR) thermography was employed for two different types of $Nicalon^{TM}/CAS$ composites, i.e., cross-ply and unidirectional specimens. During tensile testing, an IR camera was used for in-situ monitoring of progressive damages of $Nicalon^{TM}/CAS$ samples. The IR camera provided the temperature changes during tensile testing. Microstructural characterization using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed to investigate the fracture mechanisms of $Nicalon^{TM}/CAS$ composites. In this investigation, the thermographic NDE technique was used to facilitate a better understanding of the fracture mechanisms of the $Nicalon^{TM}/CAS$ composites during tensile testing.
