  • We present the mid-infrared (MIR) luminosity function (LF) of local (z < 0.3) star forming (SF) galaxies based on the AKARI's NEP-Wide Survey data. We utilized a combination of the NEP-Wide point source catalogue containing a large number (114,000) of infrared (IR) sources distributed over the wide (5.4 sq. deg) field and spectroscopic redshift (z) data for 1790 selected targets obtained by optical follow-up surveys with MMT/Hectospec and WIYN/Hydra. The AKARI's continuous $2{\sim}24{\mu}m$ wavelength coverage and the spectroscopic redshifts for sample galaxies enable us to derive accurate spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in the mid-infrared. We carried out SED-fit analysis and employed 1/Vmax method to derive the mid-IR (e.g., $8{\mu}m$, $12{\mu}m$, and $15{\mu}m$ rest-frame) luminosity functions. Our results for local galaxies from the NEP region generally consistent with various previous works for other fields over wide luminosity ranges. The comparison with the results of the NEP-Deep data implies the luminosity evolution from higher redshifts towards the present epoch. We attempted to fit our derived LFs to the double power-laws and present the resulting power indices. We also examined the correlation between mid-IR luminosity and total IR luminosity.

  • Among the AKARI all-sky survey data, the $9{\mu}m$ diffuse map is crucial to study the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features on large spatial scales, while the $18{\mu}m$ map is useful to trace hot dust emission. To utilize these advantages, we have improved the AKARI mid-infrared (MIR) all-sky survey diffuse maps. For example, we have established special methods to remove the effects of the ionizing radiation in the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) and of the scattered light from the moon. Using improved diffuse map data, we study the properties of PAHs and dust in the Galactic center region associated with high-energy phenomena.

  • In this paper, the concept of infrared thermography(IRT), the principle of measurement of IRT and how to set up the IR camera for the nondestructive testing are described in detail. Also, its utilization and non-destructive testing(NDT) diagnosis are reviewed. By performing the periodic non-touched WDT through the estimation of thermal patterns related with the temperature for the surface targeted, IRT can be applied to the early prevention of the device failure. For the diagnosis utilization, thermal imaging patterns obtained from IRT for heated blocks with internal defects were estimated through the lion-destructive method and discussed the way of IRT estimation from the analysis of characteristics between material defects and thermal imaging patterns.

  • We present a near-infrared photometric and polarimetric catalog of sources in the $39^{\prime}{\times}69^{\prime}$ fields on the northeastern part of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), which was observed using SIRPOL, an imaging polarimeter of the Infrared Survey Facility (IRSF). This catalog contains 1,858 sources brighter than 14 mag at H band with polarization signal-to-noise ratio greater than 3 in at least one of J, H, and Ks bands. We examined the polarization structures around the star-forming regions, where coherent polarization position angle distributions are seen. We also estimated magnetic field strengths in some selected fields using Chandrasekhar and Fermi analysis. The magnetic field strengths are estimated to be $3{\sim}25{\mu}G$. The wavelength dependence of polarization degrees indicates that the polarization is most likely to be originated from dichroic extinctions by the local interstellar dusts in the LMC. We found that the polarization patterns are well aligned along the molecular clouds around star-forming regions.

  • The first version of the AKARI far-infrared All-Sky Bright Source Catalogue (BSC ver.1) was released to public in March 2010. It has been widely used for various astrophysical researches. We are continuing efforts to produce the next edition. The new version is expected to be improved in accuracy and reliability, as well as its volume. Many improvements to the next version are in progress. The time-line signal is being re-examined throughout the entire data processing. Correction processes for signal linearity and detector responsivity, and procedure for masking signal anomaly are revised. The source extraction process is further tuned and operating parameters will be optimized. These bring better reliability of the source detection and possibly an increase of source numbers. The position accuracy is expected to be improved. Systematic position error seen around the Galactic plane will also be corrected. We also plan to deliver the Faint Source Catalogue version 1.

  • Adulteration of sesame oil using near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was determined. Vegetable oils including sesame oil were scanned on the NIR spectrophotometer at 400-2500 nm. Partial least square (PLS) was applied on the standardized full NIR spectral data. Discriminant analysis with PLS is adequate for determination of sesame oil adulteration, except with decreasing adulteration rate. Designing of quality control system, which uses NIR spectroscopy to measure adulteration level of sesame oil is thus possible, although more work is required to give acceptable accuracy level.

  • The geographical origin of Tricholoma matsutake mushrooms was studied using near-infrared spectroscopy. Modified partial least-square regression analyses were used to discriminate geographical origin. Two-hundred fifty-six of 259 actual domestic Tricholoma matsutake were classified as domestic produce, Sixty of 81 actual imported mushrooms were correctly classified as imported, while the other 21 imported from North Korea were not clearly classified. The accuracy of geographical origin discrimination was 92.94% The correlation coefficient, standard error of calibration, and standard error of prediction from modified partial least-square regression analysis were 0.84, 15.10% and 18.30% respectively.

  • Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy and partial least squares (PLS) regression were used to predict the amylose content of polished rice. Spectral reflectance data in a wavelength range of 1,000 to 2,500 nm were obtained with a commercial spectrophotometer for 60 different varieties of Korean rice. For a comparison of this spectroscopic method to a standard chemical analysis, the amylose contents of the tested rice samples were determined by the iodine-blue colorimetric method. The highest correlation for the rice amylose ($R^2=0.94$, standard error of prediction=0.20% amylose content) was obtained when using the FT-NIR spectrum data pre-treated with normalization, the first derivative, smoothing, and scattering correction.

  • Fault detection for dynamic loading conditions of rotational machineries was considered from the contactless, non-destructive infrared thermographic method, rather than the traditional diagnosis method. In this paper, by applying a rotating deep-grooved ball bearing, passive thermographic experiment was performed as an alternative way proceeding the traditional fault monitoring. In addition, the thermographic experiments were compared with the vibration spectrum analysis to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed method. Based on the results, it was concluded the temperature characteristics of the ball bearing under dynamic loading conditions were analyzed thoroughly.

  • The robotic arc welding is widely employed in the fabrication industry fer increasing productivity and enhancing product quality by its high processing speed, accuracy and repeatability. Basically, the bead geometry plays an important role in determining the mechanical properties of the weld. So that it is very important to select the process variables for obtaining optimal bead geometry. In this paper, the possibilities of the Infrared camera in sensing and control of the bead geometry in the automated welding process are presented. Both bead width and thermal images from infrared thermography are effected by process parameters. Bead width and isotherm radii can be expressed in terms of process parameters(welding current and welding speed) using mathematical equations obtained by empirical analysis using infrared camera. A linear relationship exists between the isothermal radii producted during the welding process and bead width.
