  • In order to develop a highly sensitive infrared sensor, it is necessary to develop techniques for decreasing the rate of heat absorption and the transition of the absorption wavelength to a longer wavelength, both of which can be induced by decreasing the pixel size of the bolometer. Therefore, in this study, $1{\mu}m$ hole-arrays with a subwavelength smaller than the incident infrared wavelength were formed on the amorphous silicon-based microbolometer pixels in the absorber, which consisted of a TiN absorption layer, an a-Si resistance layer and a SiNx membrane support layer. We demonstrated that it is possible to reduce the thermal time constant by 16% relative to the hole-patternless bolometer, and that it is possible to shift the absorption peak to a shorter wavelength as well as increase absorption in the $4-8{\mu}m$ band to compensate for the infrared long-wavelength transition. These results demonstrate the potential for a new approach to improve the performance of high-resolution microbolometers.

  • A micromachined sensor part for an infrared focal plane array has been designed and fabricated. Amorphous silicon was adapted as a sensing material, and silicon nitride was used as a membrane material. To get a good efficiency of infrared absorption, the sensor was made as a ${\lambda}/4$ cavity structure. All the processes were done in $0.5\;{\mu}m$ iMEMS fab. in the Electronics and Telecommunication Research Institute (ETRI). The processed MEMS sensor structure had a small membrane deflection less than $0.3\;{\mu}m$. This excellent deflection property can be attributed to the rigorous balancing of the stresses of individual layers. The efficiency of infrared absorption was more than 75% in the wavelength range $8\;-\;14\;{\mu}m$.

  • We have proposed a method to calculate the absorption coefficients for the bound-to-continuum transitions in a strong biased quantum-well infrared photodetector. We have applied this method to a manufactured sample of typical device parameters, and obtained good agreements with experiments. The absorption coefficients evaluated are up to 5,700/cm at some particular operating conditions. We have also been able to make a qualitative explanation for the bias dependence of response.

  • Structures of dimers of the acetonitrile and DMF diluted by carbon-tetrachloride and xenon matrices at 80K were studied with infrared absorption spectroscopy. Sample and matrix materials were codeposited onto a KBr cold trapping window. Infrared absorption spectra of pure samples and diluted samples were compared to explain the structures of dimers. The acetonitrile dimer showed the antiparallel shape and the DMF dimer showed the linear shape. After annealing, the infrared spectrum of the diluted sample showed the same shape with that of the pure sample.

  • We provide a new physical insight on the hot molecular clouds near the nucleus of the obscured AGNs. We performed near-infrared spectroscopic observations of heavily obscured AGNs in order to reveal physical characteristics of molecular clouds, especially focused on the CO fundamental ro-vibrational absorption around $4.7{\mu}m$. We have made systematic moderate-resolution spectroscopic observations toward 30 representative (U)LIRGs using the AKARI/IRC, and some of the ULIRGs showed the strong CO absorption feature. For three bright (U)LIRGs that show a steep red continuum with the deep CO absorption feature, IRAS 08572+3915, UGC 05101, and IRAS 01250+2832, we have also made high-resolution spectroscopic observations using the Subaru/IRCS. We have successfully detected many absorption lines up to highly excited rotational levels, and these lines are very deep and extremely broad. The derived physical conditions of molecular clouds are extreme; the gas temperature is as high as several 100 to a 1000 K, the $H_2$ column density is larger than $10^{22}cm^{-2}$, and the gas density is greater than $10^7cm^{-3}$. Such hot and dense molecular clouds must exist around the central engine of the AGN.

  • The thin film of PbTiO3 is fabricated at substrate temperature of 100-150$^{\circ}C$. The infrared spectrum of the ferroelectric thin film is measured as temperature of thermal treatment, 400 - 550$^{\circ}C$. According to infrared spectrum analysis, there are absorption bands at a nearby wave number of 1000 $\sim$ 400 cm-l and the thin film treated by temperature of 550$^{\circ}C$ has absorption bands of wave number 500 cm-l similar to infrared response property of PbTiO3 powder. The pyroelectric infrared detector is fabricated after deposition of Pt and PbTiO3 thin film on Si wafer by sputtering machine. The measured remnant polarization are 11.5-12.5$\muC/cm2$, breakdown electric field Ec is 100-120KV/cm, and voltage responsivity and detectivity is -280V/W, -108cm Hz/W.

  • Ices in interstellar environments are well traced mostly by their absorption features in the near- to mid-infrared spectrum. The infrared camera (IRC) aboard AKARI provides us the near-infrared spectroscopic data which cover $2.5-5.0{\mu}m$ with a spectral resolution of R ~ 120. Our AKARI spectroscopic survey of young stellar objects (YSOs), including low-luminosity protostars and background stars, revealed the absorption features of $H_2O$, $CO_2$, CO, and XCN ice components. We present near-infrared spectra of the observed targets and compare their ice abundances with those previously derived from various YSOs and the background stars behind dense molecular clouds and cores. In addition, we suggest possible science cases for SPHEREx, NASA's new near-infrared space observatory, based on the results from our AKARI IRC spectroscopic study.

  • The measurement of the infrared absorption spectrum of supporting reinforcing filler which is oltained from the domestic area of Korea, Japan and U.S.A., is used by the method of KBr pellet. As a result of experiment, each absorption fond of the filler had appeared differently, because of each filler is consisted of different chemical composition, different crystalline form, different method of preparation, and the different ways of use etc. According to the above phenomena, each filler seems to have a different characteristic infrared absorption band, We can find what filler is used for sample rubber.

  • This study was described for measuring clinically relevant levels of glucose in undiluted plasma and whole blood by near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Result from an initial measurement of major blood components powder was over-lapped the absorption bands of glucose at 1500-1600 nm. However, the NIR data of blood components were clearly separated by principle component analysis (PCA) space. By the use of partial least squares (PLS) regression, glucose concentrations in undiluted plasma and whole blood could be determined with standard errors of prediction (SEP) of 15 mg/dl and 76 mg/dl, respectively. Although these blood components possessed strong absorption bands that overlapped with the absorption bands of glucose, successful calibration models could be carried out.

  • We observed 10 Class I sources as part of the IGRINS (Immersion GRating INfrared Spectroscoph) Legacy Program, "IGRINS Survey of Protoplanetary Disks (PI: Jeong-Eun Lee)". Unlike other Class I sources, IRAS 16316-1540 shows broad absorption features in the near-infrared spectra (H and K bands). The broadened absorption features have been detected toward FU Orionis-type objects. Boxy or double-peaked absorption profiles can be produced by a Keplerian disk that has the hot mid-plane heated by a burst mass accretion. We could fit the broad absorption features of IRAS 16316-1540 with a K5 V template stellar spectrum convolved with a disk rotation profile of 45 km s-1. Therefore, rotationally broadened absorption features detected in this Class I source suggest that the episodic accretion process occurs from the early stage of star formation.
