  • Unreadable Khitan scripts of ancient documents written by indian ink on parchment(sheepskin) are visualized by active infrared thermography without contacting and damaging the document which are deteriorated and aged presumably over many years. Sinusoidal infrared thermal wave using Halogen lamp is applied to the surface of the document in order to selectively magnify and record the thermal response of indian ink. The infrared image of the document captured in real time by infrared camera under the active external excitation shows the better sharpness and readability of Khitan characters than the optical image, from which many Khitan letters like ' ' and ' ' sounding as 'd' and 'ri' in English alphabet are detected and deciphered. It is concluded from the experiment that the active infrared thermography can be used as a promising method for digital reconstruction and preservation of ancient documents in the future.

  • In this study, mid-infrared transparent zinc sulfide (ZnS) ceramics were fabricated through hydrothermal synthesis with different molar ratios of S/Zn (S/Zn = 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, and 1.6). The ZnS ceramics were sintered at a relatively low temperature of $850^{\circ}C$ to prevent the occurrence of the hexagonal phase featuring optical anisotropy. The phase composition, microstructure, and optical properties of the ZnS ceramics were subsequently investigated by employing X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy. The results obtained indicate that the ZnS nanoparticles feature the cubic phase, without the hexagonal phase. Moreover, with increasing S, the crystallinity and particle size of the ZnS nanoparticles increased. The crystallinity and density of the ZnS ceramics improved when the molar ratio of S was higher than the molar ratio of Zn, thereby enhancing the transmittance. Furthermore, the ZnS ceramic with an S/Zn value of 1.2 was found to exhibit the highest transmittance of approximately 69% owing to the reduced occurrence of the hexagonal phase and a high density of 99.8%.

  • ZnS substrates with excellent transmittance in the mid-infrared region ($3-5{\mu}m$) were prepared using hot pressing instead of conventional chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Diamond-like carbon(DLC) was coated on either one or both sides of the ZnS substrates to improve their mechanical properties and transmittance. More specifically DLC was coated using CVD with an Ar and $C_2H_2$ mixed gas, and Ge was used as the bonding layer. During CVD, the bias voltage was fixed to 500 V and analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nanoindenter, scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectrometry. Results of hardness analysis using the nanoindenter, showed that DLC coating increased from 5.9 to 17.7 GPa after deposition. The FT-IR spectroscopy results showed that, in the mid-infrared region ($3-5{\mu}m$), the average transmittance of the samples with DLC coating on one and both sides increased by approximately 6% and approximately 11.2% respectively. In conclusion, the DLC coating improved the durability and transmittance of the ZnS substrates.

  • EPDM(Ethylene-propylene-diene-terpolymer) compound reinforced with carbon black having four different particle size, acetylene black(thermal conductivity carbon black), and silica were manufactured by internal mix and open mill. To investigate the effect of particle size of filler and filler type on far-infrared vulcanization, intermal temperature of compound, degree of curing, infrared spectroscopy, and thermal analysis were measured. The thermal conductivity of far-infrared vulcanized EPDM compound increased with increasing particle size of carbon filler, but hot air vulcanized EPDM compound is not affected by particle size. The thermal conductivity was increased in the order of carbon black < silica < acetylene black(thermal conductivity carbon black).

  • Far-infrared vulcanization of ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer(EPDM) compounds has been studied in comparison with hot air vulcanization. Vulcanization characteristics of EPDM compounds were measured by degree of curing and temperature of specimens in vulcanization process. As a result, degree of curing by far-infrared of EPDM compounds was shown to be higher value than that by hot air at the same vulcanization temperature. Especially, degree of curing by far-infrared on 3 mm thickness of EPDM compounds was increased by two times compared to that by hot air. While the increase of thermal conductivity of EPDM compounds highly improved degree of curing by far-infrared, that hardly improved degree of curing by hot air.

  • Recently, infrared (IR) spectrometers have been required in various fields such as environment, safety, mobile, automotive, and military. This IR dispersive sensor detection method of substances is widely used. In this study, we fabricated a silicon (Si) prism-based near infrared (NIR) spectrometer utilizing micro electro mechanical system (MEMS) technology. Si prism-based NIR spectrometer utilizing MEMS technology consists of upper, middle, and lower substrates. The upper substrate passes through the incident IR ray selectively. The middle substrate, acting as a prism, disperses and separates the incident IR beam. The lower substrate has an amorphous Si (a-Si)-based bolometer array to detect the IR spectrum. The fabricated Si prism-based NIR spectrometer utilizing MEMS technology has the advantage of a simple structure, easy fabrication steps, and a wide NIR region operating range.

  • In an attempt to find ways of improving the quality of dried Shiitake mushroom, this study compared a conveyer-type far-infrared drying method with a traditional heated air drying method. The conveyer-type far-infrared dryer was performed at air velocity of 0.6 and 0.8 m/s under drying air temperature of 60, 70 and $80^{\circ}C$, respectively. Drying characteristics, antioxidant activities and the antioxidant compounds of Shiitake mushroom dried by far-infrared dryer were investigated. Generally, drying rate with the conveyer-type far-infrared drying method was faster than that with the traditional heated air drying method. In the conveyer type far infrared drying method, drying rates were increased with increasing temperature and air velocity. The loss of antioxidant activities during the conveyer-type far-infrared drying method at 60-0.6, 60-0.8, and $70^{\circ}C-0.6m/s$ was less than the traditional drying method. However, the loss of antioxidant activities at 70-0.8, 80-0.6, and $80^{\circ}C-0.8m/s$ was higher than that of the traditional drying method. Therefore, the conveyer type far infrared drying conditions with below $70^{\circ}C$ and 0.6 m/s air velocity may produce dried Shiitake mushroom with relatively higher antioxidant activities and antioxidant compounds.

  • Robust tracking of infrared (IR) pedestrian targets with various backgrounds, e.g. appearance changes, illumination variations, and background disturbances, is a great challenge in the infrared image processing field. In the paper, we address a new tracking method for IR pedestrian targets via multi-feature local sparse representation (SR), which consists of three important modules. In the first module, a multi-feature local SR model is constructed. Considering the characterization of infrared pedestrian targets, the gray and edge features are first extracted from all target templates, and then fused into the model learning process. In the second module, an effective tracker is proposed via the learned model. To improve the computational efficiency, a sliding window mechanism with multiple scales is first used to scan the current frame to sample the target candidates. Then, the candidates are recognized via sparse reconstruction residual analysis. In the third module, an adaptive dictionary update approach is designed to further improve the tracking performance. The results demonstrate that our method outperforms several classical methods for infrared pedestrian tracking.

  • This study examined a method for designing the optical cavity of a non-dispersive infrared gas detector. The infrared gas detector requires an optical cavity design to lengthen the ray path. However, the optical cavity with multiple reflecting surfaces has off-axis aberration due to the characteristics of the reflecting optical system. The rays were parallelized by using the off-axis parabolic mirror to easily increase the ray path and eliminate off-axis aberration so that the rays are admitted to the effective area of the infrared detector uniformly. A prototype of an infrared gas detector was produced with the designed optical cavity to confirm the performance.
