The AKARI NEP Deep Field Survey is an international multiwavelength survey over $0.4deg^2$ of the sky. This is the deepest survey made by the InfraRed Camera (IRC) of the infrared astronomical satellite AKARI with 9 filters continuously covering the $2-25{\mu}m$ range, including three filters in the Spitzer gap between the IRAC and MIPS coverages. This enabled us to make sensitive MIR detection of AGN candidates at z~ 1, based on hot dust emission in the AGN torus. It is also efficient in detecting highly obscured Compton-thick AGN population. In this article, we report the first results of X-ray observations on this field. The field was covered by 15 overlapping Chandra ACIS-I observations with a total exposure of ~300 ks, detecting ${\approx}450$ X-ray sources. We utilize rest-frame stacking analysis of the MIR AGN candidates that are not detected individually. Our preliminary analysis shows a marginal detection of the rest-frame stacked Fe $k{\alpha}$ line from our strong Compton-thick candidates.

Product distribution and consumption in the military is difficult due to unique contracts and supply systems. It is difficult to change suppliers immediately when quality problem is encountered. Due to these special circumstances, the quality of products must be thoroughly controlled. Sesame oil is used to increase the taste and nutrition of food, but it is more expensive than other cooking oils. Oil producers may blend other cooking oils with sesame oil to make higher profits, so it has become important to identify good and bad products. In this study, pure sesame oil and blend oils were compared by analyzing their smell, taste, chemical components, and near infra-red spectra to determine quality differences between them.

Each pixel of InfraRed(IR) sensor differently responds to IR light as time elapses or the sensor on/off operation is repeated. As a result, the quality of IR sensor image is deteriorated, and therefore NUC(Non-uniformity Correction) is periodically needed for IR sensor. In this paper, in order to perform NUC in the Satellite, on-board V-grooved blackbody is designed with a baffle so that the emissivity of black body is to be higher than 0.995 as well as the temperature deviation is less than $1^{\circ}C$ in the range of the infrared wave length from 3.3 to $5.2{\mu}m$. To check its performance, the emissivity and the surface temperature of the blackbody by TRT(Transfer Reference Thermometer) and IR Micrometer scanner are measured, respectively. From the results, black body design is verified and the uncertainty of NUC is estimated through the measurement results.

This study focuses on automatic image registration between multiple IR images using simple preprocessing method and modified local feature extraction algorithm. The input images were preprocessed by using the median and absolute value after histogram equalization, and it could be effectively applied to reduce the brightness difference value between images by applying the similarity of extracted features to the concept of angle instead of distance. The results were evaluated using visual and inverse RMSE methods. The features that could not be achieved by the existing local feature extraction technique showed high image matching reliability and application convenience. It is expected that this method can be used as one of the automatic registration methods between multi-sensor images under specific conditions.

To establish the Fourier-transform infra-red spectrophotometry (FTIR) direct-on-filter(DOF) technique as a useful analytical method for quartz in respirable dust samples, influence of the interference should be corrected. This study was designed to compare three methods of correction for cristobalite when quantifying the content of quartz, including the least square, the optimum choice and the spectral subtraction methods. Respirable dust, created in a dust chamber containing the standard material of quartz, cristobalite was collected using a cyclone equipped with a 25 mm, $0.8{\mu}m$ pore size DM filter as a collection medium. The quartz weights overestimated about 100% when mixed of cristobalite by measure using 799 cm-1 absorption peak of quartz. The quartz weights appeared over estimated by optimum choice, spectral subtraction and least square method in mixtures of 33% cristobalite were 90.3%, 60.1% and about 4.3%, respectively. The least square method have been adopted to correction methods of cristobalite and satisfactory results have been obtained. The results of this study suggest that, when correcting for effect of cristobalite on quantitative analysis of quartz in respirable dust by FTIR direct-on-filter method, the least square method produce the most unbiased results compared with those of other correction methods.
Near InfraRed Spectroscopy(NIRS) is a quick and accurate analytical method to measure multiple components in tobacco manufacturing process. This study was carried out to develop calibration equation of near infrared spectroscopy for the prediction of the amount of chemical components and hot water solubles(HWS) of reconstituted tobacco leaf. Calibration samples of reconstituted tobacco leaf were collected from every lot produced during one year. The calibration equation was formulated as modified partial least square regression method (MPLS) by analyzing laboratory actual values and mathematically pre-treated spectra. The accuracy of the acquired equation was confirmed with the standard error of prediction(SEP) of chemical components in reconstituted tobacco leaf samples, indicated as coefficient of determination($R^2$) and prediction error of sample unacquainted, followed by the verification of model equation of laboratory actual values and these predicted results. As a result of monitoring, the standard error of prediction(SEP) were 0.25 % for total sugar, 0.03 % for nicotine, 0.03 % for chlorine, 0.16 % for nitrate, and 0.38 % for hot water solubles. The coefficient of determination($R^2$) were 0.98 for total sugar, 0.97 for nicotine, 0.96 for chlorine, 0.98 for nitrate and 0.92 for hot water solubles. Therefore, the NIRS calibration equation can be applicable and reliable for determination of chemical components of reconstituted tobacco leaf, and NIRS analytical method could be used as a rapid and accurate quality control method.

The development and evolution of near infra-red spectroscopic (NIS) calibrations for high-moisture materials is an expensive proposition. Such investment is suspect unless the instrument, or instruments, on which calibrations were developed can be preserved intact or re-standardized as component replacements occurs. The objective of this paper is to detail the changes in performance of a six-year old instrument after maintenance in years five and six resulted in collection of spectral data that was increasingly removed from the calibration population. Calibrations for the analysis of mature sugarcane stalks, a high-moisture material, were developed successfully in 1995 using a broad sample population in terms of genetics, and spectral and temporal variation. The spectral library was further broadened in 1996. In 1997, 1999, 1999, and 2000, additional samples constituting 10% of the laboratories throughput were subjected to full component analyses using routine laboratory techniques. These samples were primarily random samples, but were complemented with samples that were significant for the spectral H statistic or for the component t statistic. In 1998, an additional calibration was developed for populations consisting of samples of either mature stalks (culms) or sucker culms. Substantial additional samples numbers were collected for this calibration in 1999 and 2000. Attempts to standardize the scanning spectrophotometer used for these calibrations with a second similar instrument in 1999 failed because the instruments were optically different, and standardization could not account for this. Maintenance adjustments were made to the remote reflectance probe of the original instrument in 1999, and replacement of its PbS detectors was done in 2000. Spectral data collected in 1999 and 2000 yielded spectral populations that were increasingly removed from the respective spectral populations on which the calibrations were developed. The mature stalk calibrations benefited marginally from evolutionary calib.

Near infra-red (NIR) spectroscopy has been used for the non-invasive assessment of intact fruit for eating quality attributes such as total soluble solids (TSS) content. However, little information is available in the literature with respect to the robustness of such calibration models validated against independent populations (however, see Peiris et al. 1998 and Guthrie et al. 1998). Many studies report ‘prediction’ statistics in which the calibration and prediction sets are subsets of the same population (e. g. a three year calibration validated against a set from the same population, Peiris et al. 1998; calibration and validation subsets of the same initial population, Guthrie and Walsh 1997 and McGlone and Kawano 1998). In this study, a calibration was developed across 84 melon fruit (R$^2$= 0.86$^{\circ}$Brix, SECV = 0.38$^{\circ}$Brix), which predicted well on fruit excluded from the calibration set but taken from the same population (n = 24, SEP = 0.38$^{\circ}$Brix with 0.1$^{\circ}$Brix bias), relative to an independent group (same variety and farm but different harvest date) (n = 24, SEP= 0.66$^{\circ}$ Brix with 0.1$^{\circ}$Brix bias). Prediction on a different variety, different growing district and time was worse (n = 24, SEP = 1.2$^{\circ}$Brix with 0.9$^{\circ}$Brix bias). Using an ‘in-line’ unit based on a silicon diode array spectrometer, as described in Walsh et al. (2000), we collected spectra from fruit populations covering different varieties, growing districts and time. The calibration procedure was optimized in terms of spectral window, derivative function and scatter correction. Performance of a calibration across new populations of fruit (different varieties, growing districts and harvest date) is reported. Various calibration sample selection techniques (primarily based on Mahalanobis distances), were trialled to structure the calibration population to improve robustness of prediction on independent sets. Optimization of calibration population structure (using the ISI protocols of neighbourhood and global distances) resulted in the elimination of over 50% of the initial data set. The use of the ISI Local Calibration routine was also investigated.

We conducted optical microscopy, infra-red spectroscopy and SEM-EDS analysis of the lacquer layers on the wooden coffins excavated from King Muryeong's Tomb. We found four varnishing methods according to the sub-materials of lacquer layers: The lacquer of wooden coffins with black paint layer on the surface were classified with two groups; single layer and three layers. The lacquer of wooden coffins without black paint layer on the surface were classified with two groups; single layer and two layers. IR spectra of the laquer were same as those of the oriental laquer. The SEM-EDS analysis showed that the lacquer layers were mixed with iron, copper and calcium.

Oral & Maxillofacial surgery can lead to complications that result in abnormal sensation or movement. Inferior alveolar nerve(IAN) injury can result in dysesthesia, paresthsia of the lower lip and chin, so patients presenting with IAN damage suffer from sensory loss. But diagnosis of the nerve injury is largely limited to the subjective statements made by the patient. Distribution of sympathetic nerves parallels the distribution of the somatosensory nerves. Loss of sensory tone causes a concomitant loss of sympathetic activity, resulting in vasodilation of the cutaneous blood vessels that demonstrates greater heat loss. Digital infrared thermographic imaging(DITI) detects infra-red radiation given off by body. DITI can detect minute difference in temperature from different parts of the body and translates the amount of heat into quantitative data. The area of different temperature correlated with pain or disease can be visualized by corresponding color. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of DITI in objectively assessing IAN injury. The 19 normal subjects and the 14 patients underwent DITI scan. The normal subjects received unilateral IAN block anesthesia with 2 ml of 2% lidocaine (IAN bolck group) to evaluate temporary alteration in nerve function. Patient group were patients with unilateral IAN damage (dysesthesia or paresthesia) after surgical treatment(Mn. 3rd molar Extraction, etc.). The surgical procedure performed within 6 months of test. The results were as follows. 1. No significant differences in temperature were found between left and right sides of the lower lip and chin in the control group. 2. Significant temperature differences were found between the anesthetized and non-anesthetized sides of the lower lip and chin in the IAN block group. 3. Significant temperature differences were found between the involved and uninvolved sides of the lower lip and chin areas of the experimental group. The results of the study show that DITI can be an useful and effective means of objectively assessing and visualizing IAN damage.
