  • Based on the theoretical framework of the Double ABCX model of family stress and adaptation, this study was to analysis the causal relationships of stressors (psychological sexual, and physical wife abuse), personal resources (self-efficacy and self-esteem) and social support(emotional and informational support), appraisal(positive appraisal and downward comparisons) with adaptation (psychological well-being and somatic symptoms). Self-administered questionnaire method was used to collect data from 264 wives residing in Chonbuk-do and Kyonggi-do area. The causal model was tested and modified by the maximum likelihood method using UISREL 7 program. Results showed that wife abuse had effect on adaptation indirectly through the latent variables of personal resource and appraisal, which influenced the adaptation directly. In addition, social support indirectly affect the adaptation through personal resource and appraisal. It was also found that all these variables explained 27.6% of the total variance of wives'adaptation, and that personal resources was the most powerful variable in predicting the adaptation of the wives.

The affect of mother's internet use on maternal efficacy is also examined. The Subjects were 250 mothers, who have their first child under 8 years old, in Seoul and Ilsan. Data were gathered through questionnaires. As predicted, mother's internet use was popular among young mothers. And, the main reason of internet use of mothers was to find some information on parenting and nurturing child. Moreover, mothers believed that they could get some social support from using internet in terms of informational, instrumental, and emotional service. However, it should be noted that mother's perceived level of support was significantly different, depending on mother's age, level of mother's education, household income, and the age of the first child. • In this study we proposed a new informational structure and category labels to fully support the functions of school websites as an access tool to its contents. The proposed model was divided into three main aspects. First, main menu structure was the primary guideline to access information embedded in a website. Therefore, The proposed main menu structure consisted of 9 categories that are commonly provided by 17 existing school websites. Second, first-level categories consisted of total 35 categories under 9 main menu categories. Each category was placed under certain categories in main menu based on the relationships with the meaning of the upper level categories. Third, the proposed model adopted general and comprehensive terms as category labels. The terms used as category labels were based on the analysis of existing category labels, and the most frequently used terms were selected from the current school websites.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study is to develop and to evaluate a internet-based social support program for the mothers of congenitally abnormal children. The theoretical basis of the study is the moderating effect model of social support theory (Cobb, 1976). Methods: In first phase, an internet support program was developed according to the practical web development stages proposed by Boling and Frick (2002). In the second phase, the internet support program was provided and evaluated to 18 mothers who reared congenitally abnormal children from March to May 2008. Results: In the first stage, demands of the program were collected from interviews of eighteen mothers of congenitally abnormal children of ages one to three. At the same time, literature review and validity of the contents were also examined. In the second stage, the correspondence of the program contents to the social support needed was also examined. In the third and fourth stages, prototype of the social program was prepared in documents and that of computer program was prepared. In the final stage, an internet-based web site was constructed. The social support provided by the web site were composed of informational support, emotional support and appraisal support including bulletin board system and chatting service. After program development, pre-tests and post-test were performed to investigate the effect of the program on maternal confidence and mood. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon signed rank test. The analysis showed that maternal confidence of post-test was improved than that of pre-test with statistically meaningful figure (Z=-2.54, p<.05). The positive mood of post-test was also improved than that of pre-test and the result was statistically supported (Z=-2.20, p<.05). Conclusion: It is suggestive that the internet based social support programs is accessible and appropriate service to congenitally abnormal children's mother. It is necessary to develop and use the internet based social support programs in public health system.
