  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the current state of foreign online databases in the field of Science and Technology. Evaluation of databases is becoming increasingly important for information users and for information providers as well. Previous research studies on evaluation of Science & Technology databases were summarized. This paper examined major online databases of Science & Technology with a short annotation. And the results of analysis by subject fields, by publishers, by frequency, by online availability of 618 titles were also described.

  • Currently the copyright law and the online digital contents industry development law aim to protect the producers of databases and digital contents. A report on databases in the United States describes that an additional protection of databases is needed as databases get more significant in terms of science and economy and become a key factor on Internet. At this moment, Korea does not recognize the importance of databases of science and technology when we look into any public or civil organizations. Accordingly this paper deals in depth with overall issues surrounding the regal protection of science and technology databases, key contents for science and technology databases protection by current laws, and additional protection problems. Considering that the industry of science and technology databases plays a pivotal role in the securement of national competitiveness, the preparation of legal measures to properly protect databases as one of the policies for the continuing development of databases should not be overlooked.

  • Security is still a great concern to this day, albeit we have come a long way to mitigate its numerous threats. No-SQL databases are rapidly becoming the new database de-facto, as more and more apps are being developed every day. However, No-SQL databases security could be improved. In this paper, we discuss a way to improve the security of XML-based databases with the use of trust labels to be used as an access control model.

  • Current states of Korean biographical databases are evaluated based on the dissatis faction factors identified by a user survey. currency, coverage, completeness, and variety of the Korean biographical databases are evaluated and compared with overseas biographical databases. The results of the analysis are given with problems and suggestions for the future improvements.

  • Many bioinformatics sites have managed local bio-databases, including major databases such as GenBank and PIR with update load. We have developed several programs to monitor the update status of these databases and to FTP them automatically. These programs can be used for maintaining local bio-databases as recent versions and providing up-to-date databases through FTP sites. Currently, the program serves major bio-databases and will extend to accommodate many more bio-databases.

  • It is of importance to integrate several databases to improve its coverage and usage of large amount of biological information produced by diverse biological experiments. In this paper, we proposed a method to integrate the protein interaction databases with various naming schemes. The identifier (ID) mapping methods in the process of integration was also presented.

  • Appearance of full-text online is the most encouraging phenomenon ·during the development of databases. The full-text databases of today is derived from by-product of electronic publication of printed materials. Now, there are also some movements toward electronic production of documents in Korea although not powerful. The present study is designed to examine the characteristics and effective retrieval method of full-text databases now commercially available through various vendors. The outline of this paper IS as follows: First, background and present situation of existing full-text database services through national and worldwide are examined. Second, free-text searching system of full-text databases is compared with controlled vocabulary system. The factors influencing on free-text retrieval performance, searching thesaurus, and hybrid or compromising system, which is using limited controlled vocabulary in conjunction with natural language for the enrichment needed for practical operation of the . system, are examined. Third, user demands through the analysis of preceding studies on 'various types of full-text databases are recognised. Fouth, application of CD-ROM full-text database to the libraries and information centers is examined as prospective resources for them. Finally, some problems and prospect of full-text databases are presented.

  • This study proves that the quoted legal text functions as the index which represents the contents of the text because of the characteristics of legal information, the automatic indexing in the secondary legal full-text databases can be possible without the assitance of the experts. In case of the establishment, amendment or repealing of law, change of words of index can be possible through revising the legal text quoted in the secondary legal full-text databases. Even when we dont input the full-text about retrospective documents, automatic indexing is also possible, and the establihment and the practice of expert knowledge and integrated databases are possible in case of the retrospective documents. This study indicates that it is necessary to have characteristic information the information experts recognize - that is to say, experimental and inherent knowledge only human being can have - built-in into the system rather than to approach the information system by the linguistic, statistic or structuralistic way, and it can be more essential and intelligent information system.

  • General branches of science and engineering now enjoy being substantially repleted in their databases. However, comparing the databases of such branches with chemistry or medical science and pharmacology, the strata do not seem to be fully equipped yet. As a matter of fact, the variety of such databases in practical application is still somewhat limited. Moreover, these databases are, with a few exceptions, prepared abroad. In this paper varieties and features of databases now available on the market for each database service system, as well as crucial points for practical use are introduced. At present, it is focussed more or less on the application of bibliographical information. Yet, it would be inevitable to equip them with factual data in order to increase the efficiency of research and development activities. Of course, it is still not easy to solve problems for better profitability and higher technical achievement. The author wishes to emphasize the necessity to fully equip the commercial factual database for said branches as quickly as possible.

  • In this paper we propose a model for checking integrity constraints of mobile databases called Three-Level (3-L) model, wherein the process of constraint checking to maintain the consistent state of mobile databases is realized at three different levels. Sufficient and complete tests proposed in the previous works together with the idea of caching relevant data items for checking the integrity constraints are adopted. This has improved the checking mechanism by preventing delays during the process of checking constraints and performing the update. Also, the 3-L model reduces the amount of data accessed given that much of the tasks are performed at the mobile host, and hence speeds up the checking process.
