  • Many researchers have evaluated the influence of vegetation cover on slope stability. However, due to the extensive variety of site conditions and vegetation types, different studies have often provided inconsistent results, especially when evaluating in different regions. Therefore, additional studies need to be conducted to identify the positive impacts of vegetation cover for slope stabilization. This study used the Transient Rainfall Infiltration and Grid-based Regional Slope-stability Model (TRIGRS) to predict the occurrence of landslides in a watershed in Jinbu-Myeon, Pyeongchang-gun, Korea. The influence of vegetation cover was assessed by spatially and temporally comparing the predicted landslides corresponding to multiple trials of cohesion values (which include the role of root cohesion) and real observed landslide scars to back-calculate the contribution of vegetation cover to slope stabilization. The lower bound of cohesion was defined based on the fact that there are no unstable cells in the raster stability map at initial conditions, and the modified success rate was used to evaluate the model performance. In the next step, the most reliable value representing the contribution of vegetation cover in the study area was applied for landslide assessment. The analyzed results showed that the role of vegetation cover could be replaced by increasing the soil cohesion by 3.8 kPa. Without considering the influence of vegetation cover, a large area of the studied watershed is unconditionally unstable in the initial condition. However, when tree root cohesion is taken into account, the model produces more realistic results with about 76.7% of observed unstable cells and 78.6% of observed stable cells being well predicted.

  • Mankind is enjoying a great convenience of their life by the rapid growth of secondary industry since the Industrial Revolution and it is possible due to the invention of huge power such as engine. The automobile which plays the important role of industrial development and human movement is powered by the Engine Module, and especially Diesel engine is widely used because of mechanical durability and energy efficiency. The main work mechanism of the Diesel engine is composed of inhalation of the organic material (coal, oil, etc.), combustion, explosion and exhaust Cycle process then the carbon compound emissions during the last exhaust process are essential which is known as the major causes of air pollution issues in recent years. In particular, COx, called carbon oxide compound which is composed of a very small size of the particles from several ten to hundred nano meter and they exist as a suspension in the atmosphere. These Diesel particles can be accumulated at the respiratory organs and cause many serious diseases. In order to compensate for the weak point of such a Diesel Engine, the DPF(Diesel Particulate Filter) post-cleaning equipment has been used and it mainly consists of ceramic materials(SiC, Cordierite etc) because of the necessity for the engine system durability on the exposure of high temperature, high pressure and chemical harsh environmental. Ceramic Material filter, but it remains a lot of problems yet, such as limitations of collecting very small particles below micro size, high cost due to difficulties of manufacturing process and low fuel consumption efficiency due to back pressure increase by the small pore structure. This study is to test the possibility of new structure by direct infiltration of SiC Whisker on Carbon felt as the next generation filter and this new filter is expected to improve the above various problems of the Ceramic DPF currently in use and reduction of the cost simultaneously. In this experiment, non-catalytic VS CVD (Vapor-Solid Chemical Vaporized Deposition) system was adopted to keep high mechanical properties of SiC and MTS (Methyl-Trichloro-Silane) gas used as source and H2 gas used as dilute gas. From this, the suitable whisker growth for high performance filter was observed depending on each deposition conditions change (input gas ratio, temperature, mass flow rate etc.).

  • This paper presents the results of a reduced-scale physical model investigation into the effect of drilling fluid with different mix designs for bore hole collapse prevention. The bore hole collapse prevention mechanism for the bentonite based drilling fluid was first discussed together with the effect of conditioning with different additives on engineering characteristics of bentonite based drilling fluid. Reduced-scale model tests were then carried out considering field procedures for cases with a decomposed granitic soil with 20% fines and a sand with various drilling fluids with different mix designs. The results indicated that the addition of polymer to the bentonite based drilling fluid decreases the amount of drilling fluid injected, the drilling fluid infiltration thickness and increases the final depth of excavation. Also revealed is that the effect of polymer on the performance of drilling fluid is more pronounced in the decomposed granite soil with 20% fines than the sand. Practical implications of the findings from this study are discussed in great detail.

  • This article describes a path planning algorithm for fixed-wing UAVs when a real terrain should be considered. Nowadays, many UAVs are required to perform mission flights near given terrain for surveillance, reconnaissance, and infiltration, as well as flight altitude of many UAVs are relatively lower than typical manned aerial vehicles. Therefore, real terrain should be considered in path planning algorithms of fixed-wing UAVs. In this research, we have extended a spline-$RRT^*$ algorithm to three-dimensional planner. The spline-$RRT^*$ algorithm is a $RRT^*$ based algorithm, and it takes spline method to extend the tree structure over the workspace to generate smooth paths without any post-processing. Direction continuity of the resulting path is guaranteed via this spline technique, and it is essential factor for the paths of fixed-wing UAVs. The proposed algorithm confirm collision check during the tree structure extension, so that generated path is both geometrically and dynamically feasible in addition to direction continuity. To decrease degrees of freedom of a random configuration, we designed a function assigning directions to nodes of the graph. As a result, it increases the execution speed of the algorithm efficiently. In order to investigate the performance of the proposed planning algorithm, several simulations are performed under real terrain environment. Simulation results show that this proposed algorithm can be utilized effectively to path planning applications considering real terrain.

  • This paper aimed to analyse dose sensitivity to the controllable parameters of in-door radon $(^{222}Rn)$ and its decay products(Rn-D) by applying the input-output linear system theory. Physical behaviors of $^{222}Rn$ & Rn-D were analyzed in terms of $^{222}Rn$ gas generation, -migation and - infiltration to indoor environments, and the performance output-function(i.e. mean dose equivalent to Tracho-Bronchial(TB) lung region was assessed to the following ranges of the controllable parameters; a) the ventilation rate constant $({\lambda}_v)$ : $0{\sun}500[h^{-1}]$. b) the attachment rate constant$({\lambda}_a)$ : 0-500 $[h^{-1}]$. c) deposition rate constant $({\lambda}{_{d}^{u}})$: 0-50$[h^{-1}]$. A linear input-output model was reconstructed from the original models in literatures, as follows, which was modified into the matrices consisting of 111 nodal equations. a) indoor ${222}Rn$ & Rn-D Behaviour: jacobi- Porstendorfer- Bruno model. b) lung dosimerty : Jacobi-Eisfeld model. Some of the major findings, which identify the effectiveness of this model, were as follows. a) ${\lambda}_v$ is most effective, dominant controllable parameters in dose reduction, if mechanical ventilation is applied. b) ${\lambda}_v$, depending on the air particle-concentration, reduces the dose somewhat within ${\lambda}_v$<1 $h^{-1}R range. However, the dose increases conversely, ${\lambda}_v$>1 $h^{-1}R range range. c) ${\lambda}{_{d}^{4}}$ reduces the dose linearly as ${\lambda}_v$ dose. Such dose(z-axis) sentivities are shown with three-dimensional plots whoes x,y-axes are combined 2out the 3 parameter${\lambda}_v{\lambda}_s,\;{\lambda}_d^s$.

  • We have performed 28 single lung transplantation in mongrel dogs transplanting the left lung exclusively from November 1989 to September 1991, in the department of thoracic surgery of Seoul National University Hospital. In the donor dogs, the main pulmonary artery was divided proximal to its bifurcation, and the left atrium was incised freeing the left veins with a generous atrial cuff. We used cold saline in the first 7 transplantations and Euro-Collins or modified Euro-Collins solution in the remaining 17 transplantations as a lung preservatives. The bronchus was divided at two cartilage rings proximal to the upper lobe bronchus take off. In the recipient procedure, we used a Fogarty catheter as a bronchus block. Left atrial anastomosis was performed first using 5-O prolene and the pulmonary artery was anastomosed using 6-O prolene. The bronchus was anastomosed next with 4-O vicryl interruptedly and covered with a greater omentum which had been prepared previously. All dogs received cyclosporin A and azathioprine as immunosuppressants and were divided into two group. In the 10 Group I dogs, they survived within 6 days, mean survival time was 66.8$\pm$53.4 hours. In remainder 14 Group lI dogs, they survived above 6 days, mean survival time was 9. 5$\pm$5.6 days. The cause of death were as follows: 2 cases of sacrifice, 2 cases of respiratory insufficiency during operation, 2 cases of arrhythmia immediate postoperatively, 2 cases of bleeding, others in Group I, and 6 cases of sacrifice, 4 cases of sepsis, 3 cases of bleeding, others in Group lI. Results of bronchoscopic findings were obstruction above 50% in 12 cases of 16 performance cases within 5th day. Early chest radiologic haziness were showed, and total lung perfusion defect was frequently showed in both group within 7th day. Main autopsy findings were left atrial and pulmonary arterial thrombi and bronchial obstruction The major histologic findings of Group I were pleural exudate, hemorrhagic infarct, pulmonary congestion, and interesting histologic findings of Group II were 3 cases of perivascular or peribronchial lymphocyte infiltration, 3 cases of hemorrhage infarct, 2 cases of interstitial pneumonitis. The structual change of bronchioles, suggesting bronchiolitis obliterans was not observed due to improper preparation of proximal pulmonary tissue and short term survival times.

  • We investigated the diffusive transport of bupivacaine HCl through the microchannels of microfluidic drug delivery devices. In the biodegradable microfluidic drug delivery devices developed in this research, the drug release rate can be controlled by simply modulating the geometrical parameters of the microchannels, such as the length, number, and cross-sectional area of the microchannels, when the microchannels are used as paths for drug release. However, the hydrophobic nature of a biodegradable polymer, 85/15 poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid), hinders the infiltration of a release medium (phosphate-buffered saline) through the microchannels into the reservoir of a device that contains bupivacaine HCl, at the early stage of drug release. This can have an adverse effect on the early stage release of local analgesic compounds from the device. In this study, microfluidic channels were surface-treated with surfactants such as PEG600 and Tween80, and the effects of the surfactants on the release performance are presented and analyzed.

  • Purpose: The nose is the most prominent skeletal feature of the face and is thus prone to frequent injury. Closed reduction of nasal bone fractures can be performed under general or local anesthesia. However, the benefits and the drawbacks in either form of anesthesia chosen are seldom perceived by the surgeon. A retrospective study was performed to assess the differences in the outcome among the two groups subjected to surgery under different type of anesthesia and to introduce our method of local anesthesia and its adequacy. Methods: Two hundred and fifteen patients during a 2-year period were included in the study. 2% Lidocaine mixed with 1:100,000 epinephrine was injected on the anterior ethmoid nerve and the periosteum. Assessment factors included intra-operative adequacy of analgesia, post-operative analgesic requirement and functional and aesthetic outcome of surgery. Results: 19 patients were manipulated under general anesthesia and 196 patients were manipulated under local anesthesia on the anterior ethmoidal nerve and dorsal periosteum. No statistically signigicant variable in performance of surgery could be attributed to the mode of anesthesia employed(p > 0.05). Four patients experienced complications after reduction. One developed septal deviation and three nasal obstruction. But, no secondary operations were needed. Conclusion: Anterior ethmoidal nerve block and dorsal periosteal injection of 2% Xylocaine, combined with topical intranasal 4% lidocaine and epinephrine provided sufficient analgesia comparable to that of general anesthesia.

  • Very low refractive index (<1.4) materials have been proved to be the key factor improving the performance of various optical components, such as reflectors, filters, photonic crystals, LEDs, and solar cell. Highly porous SiO2 are logically designed for ultralow refractive index materials because of the direct relation between porosity and index of refraction. Among them, ordered macroporous SiO2 is of potential material since their theoretically low refractive index ~1.10. However, in the conventional synthesis of ordered macroporous SiO2, the time required for the crystallization of organic nanoparticles, such as polystyrene (PS), from colloidal solution into well ordered template is typical long (several days for 1 cm substrate) due to the low interaction between particles and particle - substrate. In this study, polystyrene - polyacrylic acid (PS-AA) nanoparticles synthesized by miniemulsion polymerization method have hydrophilic polyacrylic acid tails on the surface of particles which increase the interaction between particle and with substrate giving rise to the formation of PS-AA film by simply spin - coating method. Less ordered with controlled thickness films of PS-AA on silicon wafer were successfully fabricated by changing the spinning speed or concentration of colloidal solution, as confirmed by FE-SEM. Based on these template films, a series of macroporous SiO2 films whose thicknesses varied from 300nm to ~1000nm were fabricated either by conventional sol - gel infiltration or gas phase deposition followed by thermal removal of organic template. Formations of SiO2 films consist of interconnected air balls with size ~100 nm were confirmed by FE-SEM and TEM. These highly porous SiO2 show very low refractive indices (<1.18) over a wide range of wavelength (from 200 to 1000nm) as shown by SE measurement. Refraction indices of SiO2 films at 633nm reported here are of ~1.10 which, to our best knowledge, are among the lowest values having been announced.

  • PM (particulate matter) is of interest to everyone because it can have adverse effects on human health by the infiltration from respiratory to internal organs. To date, many studies have made efforts for the prediction of PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations. Unlike previous studies, we conducted the prediction of tomorrow's PM10 concentration for the Air Korea stations using Chinese PM10 data in addition to the satellite AOD and weather variables. We constructed 230,639 matchups from the raw data over 3 million and built an RF (random forest) model from the matchups to cope with the complexity and nonlinearity. The validation statistics from the blind test showed excellent accuracy with the RMSE (root mean square error) of 9.905 ㎍/㎥ and the CC (correlation coefficient) of 0.918. Moreover, our prediction model showed a stable performance without the dependency on seasons or the degree of PM10 concentration. However, part of coastal areas had a relatively low accuracy, which implies that a dedicated model for coastal areas will be necessary. Additional input variables such as wind direction, precipitation, and air stability should also be incorporated into the prediction model as future work.
