Factors Affecting Lumber Conversion Rate of Sawmill Industry in South Korea

  • This study is conducted to investigate the factors affecting lumber conversion rate of sawmill industry in South Korea. Data were obtained from the survey of 38 sawmills in all geographic regions of South Korea. The variables examined in this study were region, softwood/hardwood log, domestic/imported/both log, the number of power-driven carriages (PDC) installed, the year when and country where PDCs was manufactured, the horse power of PDC, the number of labors required to operate each PDC, the sawing capacity of mill (mill size), and the types of major product and by-products. The lumber recovery factor (LRF) of sawmills were significantly influenced by the origin of logs, level of PDC automation, sawmill size, and size of logs (measured in diameter and length) while not by the location of the mill, types of major product and by-product, log species, and characteristics of PDC. Although these results provide useful information for understanding the technological characteristics of the Korean sawmill industry, further investigation with larger sample is necessary to reveal the more reliable characteristics of sawmill industry in South Korea.

국내 자동차산업에서 제품데이터품질에 대한 현황 조사 (Investigation of Product Data Quality in the Korean Automotive Industry)

  • Product data quality (PDQ) is a real and significant issue in today's manufacturing environment. In the Korean automotive industry, much of the design work takes place with the support of software tools, such as CAD systems. Although many designers frequently encounter quality problems regarding product data, there is no investigation into the present state of CAD usage and PDQ activities before. The Korean automotive industry is responsible for about 11.1 percent of the total value of manufactured goods in Korea and 7.9 percent of employment in manufacturing. A study performed by the Research Triangle Institute showed that imperfect interoperability imposes at least $\$1$ billion per year on the members of the U.S. automotive supply chain. The trends toward concurrent engineering and out-sourcing have elevated the importance of high-quality product data and efficient product data exchange. This paper shows the results from a survey of PDQ conducted on seven 1st tiers among members of the Korean automotive supply chain.

국내 의류 제조업체와 생산 협력업체간 정보 공유 특성 (The Quality of the Information Sharing between the Korean Apparel Manufatures and the Contractors)

  • As apparel manufacturers have increased their outsourcing garment making to cope with the rapid changing market, the information sharing has been the most important factor for the Korean apparel industry. The purpose of this research was to study the present state and the needs of the information sharing between the apparel manufacturers and the contractors; and the relationship between the product property (basic/fashion product) and the information sharing property. A total of 86 Korean apparel manufacturers were surveyed for the study. The results are: 1) the information sharing level on manufacturing capacity, manufacturing processing condition, and product quality were a bit higher than other surveyed information, but the level on inventories and sales were lower than others. in addition, the information sharing needs by online system of manufacturing capacity, manufacturing processing condition, and product quality were greater than other information; 2) In the case of fashion product, the information sharing needs of product quality by online system were much greater than in the case of basic product. This study is expected to help apparel manufacturers to construct their information sharing system which is apt for their product property and needs.

특허경영활동이 기업 경영성과에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 : 국내 의료기기 제조 기업을 중심으로 (A Study on the Effect of Patent Management Activities on Firm Outcome : The Case of Korean Product Manufacturing Firms)

  • Patent management activities are considered to play a key role for technology-based firms under the recent knowledge-based economies. This is because intellectual property, including patents, can act as a system for continuous profit generation by protecting firms' products, processes and services. In Korea, healthcare industry is now regarded as one of the promising next generation industries. Despite the promise of healthcare industry, Korean healthcare product manufacturers are faced with turbulent business changes, such as market opening. Even though there are various industrial studies on the effect of patent management activities on firm outcome, previous studies have hardly paid attention to Korean healthcare product manufacturing firms. For this reason, this study identifies the effect of patent management activities, such as patenting activeness, technical excellence and cooperation degree, on firm outcomes, including financial profitability and firm growth, with respect to the Korean healthcare product manufacturers. In this study, we located 86 Korean healthcare manufacturing firms from KORCHAMBIZ and DART, and then collected the data of their patenting activities and outcomes between 2001 and 2013. By applying factor analysis and regression analysis, our empirical study found that firms' patenting activeness has the significant positive relationship on firms' financial profitability, and firms' patenting activeness and technical excellence have the significant positive relationship on firms' financial growth. Our study is an initial attempt to identify the effect of patent management activities on firm outcome within Korean healthcare product manufacturing industry, and thus its results can be used as the basis to formulate national policies for Korean healthcare product industry.

Product-Story Congruence and Actor Attractiveness in Product Placements in Television Drama

  • As more consumers avoid ads aided by advanced technologies that conveniently block ads, traditional advertising is becoming less effective than ever before. Product placements are increasingly executed to unobtrusively expose products and brands to consumers while they watch media programs. The current study attempts to enhance our understanding of the factors that affect consumer attitude towards the brands placed in TV dramas. In particular, this study examines whether the attractiveness of actors and the congruency between the products placed and the story of the TV drama influence consumer attitudes towards the TV drama and the brand. A total of 211 male consumers in their 20s and 30s were used for data analyses. Structural equation modelling revealed that the product-story congruence had a positive impact on consumer attitude towards the TV drama as well as their attitude towards the brand. Actor attractiveness (in terms of similarity and likability) positively influenced consumer attitude towards the brand. Only the perceived likability dimension of actor attractiveness was found to affect consumer attitude towards the TV drama.

Study on the Combustion Characteristics of Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) for Use as Interior Building Materials

  • In this study, the combustion characteristics of the Tulip tree, which is the representative broad-leaved afforestation tree in Korea, were analyzed. The flame retardant performance of the Tulip tree was analyzed by analyzing combustion characteristics on a total of three test samples; flame retardant treated, both flame retardant and oil stain-treated, and untreated. Then the flame retardance grade was classified for each of them. According to the result, test samples showed the strongest flame retardance were in order of flame retardant treated (C), both flame retardant and oil stain-treated (B), and untreated (A). As a result of analyzing the total heat emission and maximum heat emission rates, which is the evaluation standard for interior materials of Korean domestic buildings, test samples with flame retardant treat or flame retardant and oil stain treat were qualified for the flame-retardant standard. Both flame retardant and oil stain-treated samples showed higher total heat release (THR) and heat release rate compared to flame retardant-treated samples as the oil causes combustion with oxygen. On the other hand, they didn't qualify the THR in Quasi-non-combustible standards. To determine the correlation between the physical and combustion characteristics of wood, the combustion characteristics of other diffuse porous wood species, with which the Tulip tree is affiliated were analyzed, and noticed that the characteristic correlates with the density and quantity of wood. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic information on the combustion characteristics of the Tulip tree.

民間 住宅建設事業者의 住宅事業 實態調査 (A Survey on the Private Housebuilders' Business Strategies)

  • This study is identified the characteristics of housing product through housebuilders' strategies. As a methodology for this study, literature survey and questionnaire survey were used. Questionnaires have been done on mail to 232 housebuilders and return rate was 34.1%. In summary, housing product can be characterized long gestation period, periodically building cycle, future uncertainty of market volatility, maximization of land development gain, utilization of public fund for continuous building activity, moral hazard by accidentally bankrupcy. Therefore private housebuilding could be defined speculative industry.

  • Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is a product development tool used to ensure that the voice of the customer is heard and translated into products. This paper shows the applicability and usefulness of this product development tool in the apparel industry by developing an apparel example and taking it through the four matrices that encompass a QFD process.
