Target Market Selection Using MCDM Approach: A Study of Rolling Stock Manufacturer

  • Purpose: This study examines the market segmentation and strategy of PT INKA, a rolling stock manufacturer in Indonesia. Research design, data and methodology: The study used the MCDM (Multiple Criteria Decision Making) method specifically the AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process). The AHP method was applied to identify the target market. This method or approach considers the market attractiveness and competitive strength criteria with quantified parameters. Results: a) Australia, Kenya, Tanzania, New Zealand, and India emerge as the top five target markets; b) There is justification for rolling stock manufacturers to allocate their resources in winning the market share. Conclusion: The main challenge confronting the rolling stock manufacturer is limited resources to acquire a particular market share despite abundant opportunities in this sector. Despite the mastery of technology and long experience in the industry, selecting a target market with multiple criteria could be difficult for an emerging rolling stock manufacturer in South East Asia.

우리나라 의료기기산업의 대중국 경쟁력 연구 (The competitiveness study of Korea Medical Device Industry in China)

  • 본 연구에서는 중국시장에서 우리나라의 국제경쟁력을 보유한 수출특화품목을 도출하기 위하여 RCA지수, MCA지수, TSI지수를 통해 우리나라와 중국 의료기기산업의 국제경쟁력을 분석하였으며 도출된 국제경쟁력 지수를 그룹화하고 연도별로 변화추이를 살펴보았다. 우리나라는 중국시장에서 우리나라 의료기기 품목의 경쟁력을 강화하기 위하여 지속적으로 중국 의료기기 시장 동향을 분석하고 중국시장에서 우리의 시장점유율과 경쟁우위를 파악하여 수출특화품목을 도출하고 발굴해야 할 것이다.

  • 본 논문의 목적은 다양한 게임 플랫폼의 도래에 따른 중국 게임 시장의 현황과 미래를 전망하여 급성장하고 있는 중국 게임시장의 경쟁력을 분석하고자 한다. 지금까지는 주로 온라인게임을 대상으로 중국에서 한국 MMORPG의 선전이 두드러졌었다. 그러나 중국은 자체 게임으로 시장 점유율이 매년 상승하며 증가하는 R&D를 통해 부단히 성숙해가고 있다. 이러한 상황을 배경으로 중국 온라인게임 시장만을 연구대상으로 하는 것은 앞으로 경쟁우위의 기회와 발전의 한계가 예상되기 때문에 다양한 게임플랫폼별 발전 가능성이 있는 게임을 분석하여 부단히 변화 발전하는 게임과 외부환경변화 한국게임의 중국진출하기 위한 방안을 제시함으로써 국내 온라인게임업체의 경쟁력 강화를 목적으로 한다.

니켈의 국내 유통 현황 (Nickel Material Flow in Korea)

  • 니켈은 20세기에 들어와 철강, 군수 산업의 발달로 활용분야는 다양해졌고, 그 수요도 계속 증가추세에 있다. 그리고 최근 5년간 가격이 큰 증가세를 보여 안정적인 공급이 각 수요부문의 중요한 문제로 부각되었다. 하지만 국내외적으로 스테인리스강 제조부문을 비롯한 주요 수요처의 소비동향만을 파악할 뿐 완전한 니켈의 물질흐름을 파악하지 못해, 원료에서 최종제품 및 응용제품에 이르기까지 발생되는 스크랩 및 폐기물로부터 니켈의 회수와 재활용이 만족할만한 수준에 이르지 못하고 있다. 보고체계와 통계자료가 미비한 국내 현실이지만, 국내로 수입되고 유통되는 니켈을 조사하여 보다 확실한 니켈의 물질흐름 정립과 재활용 정책을 위한 기초자료를 제공하기 위해 본 연구를 시행하였다.

Analysis of Hierarchical Competition Structure and Pricing Strategy in the Hotel Industry

  • This study aims to investigate the effects of market commonality and resource similarity on price competition and the recursive consequences in the Korean lodging market. Price comparison among hotels in the same geographic market has been facilitated through the development of information technology, rendering little search cost of consumers. While the literature implies the heterogeneous price attack and response among hotels, a limited number of empirical researches focus on the asymmetric and recursive pattern in the competitive dynamics. This study empirically examines the price interactions in the Korean lodging market based on the theoretical framework of competitive price interactions and countervailing power. Demonstrating superiority to the spatial lag model and the ordinary least squares in the estimation, the results from spatial error model suggest that the hotels with longer operational history pose an asymmetric impact on the price of the newer hotels. The asymmetry is also found in chain hotels over the independent, further implying the possibility of predatory pricing. The findings of this study provide the evidence of a hierarchical structure in the price competition, with different countervailing power by the resources of the hotels. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed, with suggestions for future study.

장수명주택 해외진출을 위한 대상국가의 외부환경분석 (External Environment Analysis of Target Countries for Overseas Expansion of Long-life Housing)

  • Currently, the Korean construction industry is shifting its interest to the overseas construction market because of a stagnating domestic market. In the meantime, the international housing construction market is expanding with respect to new city development projects that are supported by population growth and urban migration. Despite the Korean construction industry's expertise in new city development, technology, and systems for apartment supply, the share of Korean players in the international housing construction market is continuously decreasing. As a measure to overcome this situation, the authors of this study considered the paper "The Development of a Cost Effective, Long-life Housing Model and Construction of Testbed," which is currently in progress as a part of national project. Through literature review and interviews with experts, the authors determined that there are "column+minimum interior (infill)" apartments that are similar to the long-life housing in some areas of China, Southeast Asia, and Russia. Candidate countries expected to be feasible for the entry of long-life housing were selected by determining the top countries that have already entered the long-life housing market and analyzing those selections through additional specific techniques. 저원가 항공사의 경영전략과 실패사례에 관한 연구 (A study on Management Strategy and Cases of Failure of Low Cost Carriers)

  • Air transportation industry becomes more competitive because that the restrictions on new access to market were eased and related enough for each airline to choose the freight rate and the route without rein. New competitors are pursuing convergence strategy which focuses on low freight rate as a niche strategy for increasing market share by stimulating low cost demand. This strategy is now spreading all over the world such places as Europe, Asia, Oceania and etc. As of December 1, 2004, hundreds of low cost carriers are participating actively in the market and finding their level as a new strategic group in the air transportation industry with expanding their market. In case of USA, however, many airlines, which had newly entered to the market, went into bankruptcy in the mid-1980s. People Express in USA established in 1980 is one of the examples of failure. In case of Japan, Hokkaido International Airline, a typical low cost carrier which established in 1997, filed for bankruptcy. This study is for examining the strategic implication closely through the study on management strategy and cases of failure of low cost carriers.

  • The development of the ethnic minorities and mountainous areas (EMMA) is currently receiving the attention of countries around the world. This is demonstrated through a large number of studies, in many respects, in many different countries. The objective of the study is to find out the current situation of the commodity market in the ethnic minorities and mountainous areas (EMMA) of Vietnam. In particular, the authors will study whether there is a link between the ability to access governmental policies and the characteristics of this commodity market. To achieve the goal, the authors employed the secondary data collection method to gather the relevant information on government policies for EMMA and conducted an interview of seventy (70) enterprises in the Northern midlands and mountainous regions and the Central Coast to clarify the characteristics of commodity market. By Levene's test, the results showed that the accessibility to governmental policies has a certain influence on the development of the commodity market patterns in the EMMA in terms of diversification of distribution forms and sales method of the business. These findings brought some basic solutions to further enhance the role of the government in developing commodity markets in the EMMA of Vietnam.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the intrinsic strengths and weaknesses, as well as opportunities for success and threats of Korean health care industry when planning strategies to enter Chinese health care market. Methods: To suggest directions for planning the strategies, a SWOT(Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis was used in combination with an AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) in this study. A total of twenty SWOT factors and the relative weight of SWOT groups were examined through a survey on the respondents who have work experiences in the area of entering Chinese market. Results: "Geographical proximity between Korea and China" was recognized as a key strength. "Absence of success case in medical service industry" was selected as a critical weakness. "Increase in demand for advanced medical services in China" was identified as an important opportunity. "Difficulty in establishing Korea-China partnership" was considered as a major threat. The respondents prioritized weaknesses, followed by threats, opportunities, and strengths when conducting strategic planning to enter Chinese health care market. Conclusions: Improving local hospital management plan as well as specializing in certain health care services may be necessary.

Investing for the Future: A Comprehensive Study of the Southeast Asian Construction Markets

  • Korean construction industry made a huge growth over several decades. However, domestic construction market has shrunk in recent years due to the domestic political environments and global economic crisis. Today, the international construction markets become more important to be investigated, and demands for international construction study have risen. The purpose of this study is to search for measures to compare the potential of Southeast Asian countries' construction markets and select strategic target countries where the Korean construction companies pursue to explore for future investments. The research team investigated a range of selection factors which can represent the construction market condition of each country. These factors included the size of the construction industry, economic growth potential, current relationship with Korea, the level of infrastructure development, political situation, etc. After collecting data, each selection factor was scored by experts' analyses and the total score was given to each country. As a result, the rating identified attractive countries for future investments: Myanmar, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka. For the target countries, analytical methods were used for in-depth market analysis that can provide comprehensive insight and strategic clue for development of short-/mid-/long-term roadmap and action plans. The research findings would be used to support rational decision making of construction investment advancing to the Southeast Asian economic growth.
