The response of environmental pollutants can be detected bioanalytically focusing on the source and matrices of concern. Cell culture bioassays are rapid and inexpensive, and thus have great potential for determination of environmental pollution. We have examined the estrogenic and dioxin-like activites of industrial wastewater using E-screen assay and EROD microbioassay. Influent and effluent wastewater were collected from four different industrial wastewater treatment plants, such as cosmetics, paints, textile producing and metal coating plant, and extracted using solid-phase extraction with Oasis@HLB plus cartridge. Pollutants adsorbed to the cartridge were eluted with MTBE. MCF-7 cells were treated with extracts showed various estrogenic potential. The textile wastewater showed strong estrogenic activity and the others showed weak estrogenic activity, No effect was observed in the wastewater from paints producing plant. All extracts showed CYPIA inducing effects, indicating these samples contain dioxin-like chemicals. Bioanalytical results of effluents compared with influents could give us information about the incomplete wastewater treatment and biological potency caused by pollutants. This paper was studied to research regarding the removal of contained nitrogen in industrial wastewater which uses the A2O4 advanced water treatment process. The field researches of two companies' wastewater occurred in each wastewater treatment site to apply the A2O4 process system, it was observed them for 20 days. As a result of the A2O4 system advanced wastewater process which applied an altitude control process obtained $10{\sim}76\;mg/L$, and 20 mg/L total nitrogen compound concentration in the two wastewater plants. In conclusion, it applied the A2O4 system in the two companies' wastewater system.
In this study, we investigated influent and effluent water pollutants in 53 Public Sewage Treatment Works (PSTWs) where industrial wastewater or landfill leachate is combined four times for two years from 2014 to 2015. Also, we analyzed the characteristics of heavy metals and volatile organic carbons at influent and effluent of these PSTWs caused by sewage treatment combined with industrial wastewater or landfill leachate. As a result, six heavy metals such as barium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel and zinc, and four volatile organic carbons (VOCs) including phenols, di(2-)ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), formaldehyde and toluene were observed above detection limits in most of PSTWs. Also, it was revealed that six heavy metals such as hexavalent chromium, mercury, cadmium, chromium, nickel and selenium, and four VOCs including 1,1-dichloroethylene, vinyl chloride, naphthalene, and epichlorohydrin were observed more frequently according to precipitation. As a result of reviewing the monitoring data on "Water Quality Monitoring Networks" in lower watersheds of PSTWs, both heavy metals and VOCs were below detection limits, indicating that the effluent water had little influence on the watershed. Nevertheless for the better management of influent and effluent pollutants in PSTWs, it is necessary to establish the advanced management plans for water pollutants in PSTWs, which include a list of priority substances management, monitoring plans, and guidelines for industrial wastewater and landfill leachate combined in PSTWs.
This study was implemented to find an optimal model for wastewater treatment processes using PHOENICS(Parabolic, hyperbolic or Elliptic Numerical Integration Code Series) and ASM(Activated Sludge Model). PHOENICS is a general software based upon the laws of physics and chemistry which govern the motion of fluids, the stresses and strains in solids, heat flow, diffusion, and chemical reaction. The wastewater flow and removal efficiency of particle in two phase system of a grit chamber in wastewater treatment plant were analyzed to inquire the predictive aspect of the operational model. ASM was developed for a biokinetic model based upon material balance in complex activated sludge systems, which can demonstrate dynamic and spatial behavior of biological treatment system. This model was applied to aeration tank and settling chamber in Choonchun city, and the modeling result shows dynamic transport in aeration tank. PHOENCS and ASM could be contributed for the optimal operation of wastewater treatment plant.
A study of stream pollution caused by construction of the Industrial Complex in Agricultural Area of Chung Chong Nam Do were descrived here. The five main results of this studies are summerized. First, since 1988, among the companies moved in the industrial complex area, the number of electric and electronic companies have increased compared with food companies requiring much BOD. This Is very desirable to reduce the water pollution. Second, the average Biochemical Oxygen Demand(BOD) of Masan stream was the highest and it was decreased in the order of Yudug, Jo and Jungan stream. Third, although the concentration of heavy metals such as Cd and C $r^{6+}$ are not off the limit and the amount of it is small, it is desirable to introduce a chemical process to remove these metals. Fourth, since the wastewater from industrial complex area is the major factor in stream pollution, the laws associated with environmental protection should be enforced even then if the Industrial complex area with food and chemical companies produce wastewater less than 500ton/day. Fifth, it is required to improve a facilities which separete living wastewater from inderstrial wastewater In Kaya-gok and Nojang industrial complex areas.
A phenolic resin industrial wastewater containing about 41,000 mg/l of phenol and 2,800 mg/l of formaldehyde was biologically treated by a mixed culture GE2 immobilized on ceramic beads. This study was carried out with three experimental groups : Control-only added the sludge of papermill wastewater ; GE2 treatment-added GE2 to Control ; Ceramic treatment-applied ceramic carrier to GE2 treatment. When the original wastewater was diluted 80 times with aerated tap-water, influent COD$_{Mn}$ WaS 1,140 mg/l and that of the effluent was in the range of 22-35 mg/l, which was not much different among the experimental groups. However, at 20-times dilution, influent COD$_{Mn}$ was 4,800 mg/l and the effluent COD$_{Mn}$ of Control, GE2 treatment and Ceramic treatment was 179, 128 and 94 mg/l, respectively. COD$_{Mn}$, removal efficiency by Ceramic treatment was the highest, at 98.0%. At this time, the effluent phenol concentration of Control, GE2 treatment and Ceramic treatment was 10.71, 7.93 and 5.60, respectively. As the dilution times decreased, the removal efficiency of COD$_{Mn}$ and phenol did not change much, but COD$_{Mn}$ and phenol concentration of the effluent increased. Consequently, it is likely that the phenolic industrial wastewater containing phenol and formaldehyde can be biologically treated using a GE2 and ceramic carrier and that at 40-times dilution, the effluent completely meets the effluent standards for industrial wastewater treatment plant.
As of 2003, construction waste has been produced at the level of 130,614.8 tons/day, in which the amount of waste concrete was 92,639.1 tons/day and accounted for about 66.4% of the amount of construction waste. Waste concrete is mainly produced in construction work and civil engineering work. Especially, road surface crushing method using a large amount of water requires thorough management of concrete wastewater. The aim of this study was to analyze water pollution due to concrete wastewater generated in repair of bridge deck using road surface crushing equipment and to suggest reasonable countermeasures for solve the problem. In this study, it was surveyed current conditions of produced concrete wastewater in bridge deck repair, analyzed physical features of concrete wastewater, expected effects of water pollution on inflow rivers if it is not treated, established treatment plan of water pollution by categories, and calculated capacity of each treatment process and required amount of necessary chemicals. As a result of sampling wastewater generated in field sites and testing it at a lab scale, it was revealed that the original wastewater was produced in removing concrete from bridge deck slabs using surface crushing equipment whose pH was 12.53, CODMn was 12.910mg/L, SS was 547.0mg/L, and other heavy metals were included in extremely small quantities.
Twenty organic chemical substances(Table 2) were isolated from untreated wastewater, as well as treated wastewater, collected at 76 companys of 9 industry group located in the basin of Youngsan River. Those organic compounds were analyzed by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry(GC/MS) and confirmed through comparison with each standard reagents. Phenol, which was not detected in the raw wastewater, was identified in the effluent of treatment facility, indicating that phenol is generated from isopropylbenzene of plant wastewater.
Introduction of Technology-Based Effluent Limitations (TBELs) concepts into Korea requires extensive and through analyses on the expected pollutants reduction effects and the cost factor for the industry side. In addition, the TEBLs should be optimized for the regulatory environments of Korea and be applied in a progressive manner to minimize the undesirable effects. It is also necessary to assess the contribution of each industrial categories's to the pollution of natural water bodies to find the priority of TEBLs application. For these purposes, the pollution loads of various industrial categories were analyzed using risk assessment indicator based on Toxic Weighting Factors (TWFs). First, the TWFs were calculated for the pollutants regulated using the method adopted by USEPA. And the effluent characteristics of the eighty two categories of industry in Korea were investigated. Although the analytical data on the wastewater from different industrial categories are relatively limited, the results from two previous studies were used. The first study, conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Research in 2001~2004, investigated the wastewater characteristics from 255 industrial sources covering the major 20 industrial categories. The second study includes more recent analytical data for the wastewater from 500 industrial sources, covering all the 82 industrial categories. In the result of the pollution loads analyses, the category of 'Synthetic and Chemical manufacture' was found to show the highest raw pollution load. On the other hand the category of 'Ion & Steel manufacture' was found to show the highest effluent pollution loads, which can be considered as the real impacts on natural water streams. The top five categories occupied 62.2% of the total effluent pollution loads. Through the analyses, the relative importances of each industrial categories and the priorities of TEBL-based pollution reduction were determined.
