Durability and Reliability Improvement for the Rubber Mount of Industrial Trucks (산업용차량 고무마운트 부품에 대한 내구성 및 신뢰성개선)

  • Predicting fatigue life of rubber components is an important issue in design procedure for industrial trucks to assure the durability and reliability. Main considerations in designing rubber components against fatigue failure are the compounding technology, shape design, and manufacturing process. Among them the rubber compounding technology is one of the most critical factor to determine more than 50% of component's quality. This paper presents how to improve the durability and reliability of industrial rubber mount during its design, development and prototype testing. The data presented illustrates explicitly the prediction of reliability growth in the product development cycle. The application of these techniques is a part of the product assurance function that plays an important role in rubber components reliability improvement.

  • Plant life cycle consists of design, construction, certification, operation, and maintenance phases, and various and enormous plant life cycle data is involved in each phase. Plant life cycle data should be linked with each other based on its proper relationships, so that plant operators can access necessary plant data during their regular operations and maintenance works. Currently, the relationships of plant life cycle data may not be defined explicitly, or they are scattered over several plant information systems. This paper proposes high level design of a plant life cycle data management system based on pre-defined plant life cycle database design. ISO-15926 standard is adapted for the database design. User-interface designs of the plant life cycle data management system are explained based on analysis of plant owners' requirements. A conceptual design of the database is also described with the entity-relationship diagram.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the self-reported measurement for engineering design competency. In this study, engineering design competency is defined as the overall individual ability that is necessary for an engineer for his/her successful accomplishment of engineering design. This measurement was developed through reviewing documents, defining factor and sub-factor, making an item and constructing validity verification. The self-reported measurement for engineering design competency consists of 6 factors and 40 items. 6 factors cover competency of design performance, competency of considering economic and social influence, competency of utilizing mathematical and scientific knowledge, competency of teamwork, competency of design-centered thinking and competency of collecting and using data. A 6-points Likert scale was used for each item.

  • A design method of the network for automated transporters mounted on rails is addressed for automated container terminals. In the network design, the flow directions of some path segments as well as routes of transporters for each flow requirement must be determined, while the total transportation and waiting times are minimized. This study considers, for the design of the network, the waiting times of the transporters during the travel on path segments, intersections, transfer points below the quay crane (QC), and transfer points at the storage yard. An algorithm, which is the combination of a modified Dijkstra's algorithm for finding the shortest time path and a queuing theory for calculating the waiting times during the travel, is proposed. The proposed algorithm can solve the problem in a short time, which can be used in practice. Numerical experiments showed that the proposed algorithm gives solutions better than several simple rules. It was also shown that the proposed algorithm provides satisfactory solutions in a reasonable time with only average 7.22% gap in its travel time from those by a genetic algorithm which needs too long computational time. The performance of the algorithm is tested and analyzed for various parameters.

  • An innovative cage for spinal fusion surgery is presented within this work. The cage utilizes shape memory alloy for its hinge actuation. Because of the use of SMA, a smaller incision is needed which makes the cage deployment minimally invasive. In the development of the cage, a model for predicting the torsional behavior of SMAs was developed and verified experimentally. The prototype design of the cage was developed and manufactured. The prototype was subjected to static tests per ASTM specifications. The cage survived all of the tests, alluding to its safety within the body.

  • Evolutionary operation is useful to improve on-line full-scale manufacturing processes by systematically changing the levels of the process variables without jeopardizing the product. This paper presents a system design for an evolutionary operation software called 'evolutionary optimizer'. The system design is based primarily on data flow diagram. Evolutionary optimizer consists of four modules: factorial design module, many variables module, mixture Production module, and mean/dispersion module.

  • The Special safety systems are incorporated into the plant design to limit radioactive releases to the public in the event of accident. Wolsung 2 is better builted than Wolsung 1 by 84 design changes for new approval requirements, codes & standards changes and manufacturing changes etc. This paper analysed and discussed the design change items for nuclear reactor safety system and needs development of design engineering for digital protection system.

  • This paper proposes how to develop the EC(Electronic Commerce) for industrial-related items, which has not been tried yet in EC areas. Usually industrial design derives an idea and concept for a new product from the needs of end-users and manufacturers. Then this product is developed through the design process such as idea-sketch, rendering, and design modeling mock-up. The purpose of this paper is to vitalize the trade for some items which are necessary for the design process and are intermediate products. That is, the idea and concept from the needs and seeds can be dealt with as one item. Furthermore, the idea-sketch and rendering materializing from the idea can be an item also. By doing so, excellent design items which could be thrown away in the middle of the process can be made into valuable commodities. Then we can specify the role of Designer, Manufacturer, and End-User as a buyer or a seller.

A Research on the Norming of The Self-Reported Test for Engineering Design Competency (자기 보고식 공학설계 역량 검사 도구 규준화 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to norm the engineering design competency test. To achieve the purpose of the study, a survey was conducted on engineering college students nationwide using engineering design competency test developed in the precedent study, and a total of 2,859 questionnaires were analyzed. The main results are as follows. First, the national average of engineering design competency scores was 158 out of 240 points. Second, there was no significant difference between genders in engineering design competency by background variables. On the other hand, there was a significant difference by major. It was found that mechanical and construction majors have higher engineering design competency than IT and chemical/material engineering majors. Also, the scores of engineering design competency increased as the grade went up. Third, the number of courses related to engineering design did not affect by engineering design competency, but the actual number of times of experience in engineering design was affected by engineering design competency.

  • Drivers' sitting strategies are considered in car seat design. Existing research has identified representative sitting strategies by visual inspection of seating pressure measurements collected from a small sample size of drivers. The present study recruited 20 female and 20 male participants, measured seating pressure, and classified sitting strategies by cluster analysis. The participants' sitting postures were classified based on seating pressure distribution into mid-back and scapular, mid-back and lumbar, and lumbar sitting strategies for the upper body and hip concentrated, hip and mid-thigh concentrated, and hip and mid-thigh distributed sitting strategies for the lower body. The effects of gender and occupant package layout (OPL) on sitting strategy were nout found significant. The identified sitting strategies would be of use for the design and evaluation of an OPL and a seat.
