  • In conceptual design of engineering devices, a designer decomposes a required function into sub-functions, so-called functional decomposition, using a kind of functional knowledge representing achievement relations among functions. However, such knowledge about functionality of engineering devices is usually left implicit because each designer possesses it. Even if such knowledge is found in documents, it is often scattered around technical domains and lacks consistency. Aiming at capturing such functional knowledge explicitly and sharing it in design teams, we discuss its systematic description based on functional ontologies which provide common concepts for its consistent and generic description. We propose a new concept named “was of achievement” as a key concept for capturing such functional knowledge. Categorization of typical representations of the knowledge and its organization as is-a hierarchies are also discussed. The generic concepts representing functionality of a device in the functional knowledge are provided by the functional concept ontology, which makes the functional knowledge consistent and applicable to other domains. We also discuss development of a design supporting system using the systematized knowledge, called a functional was server. It helps human designers redesign an existing engineering device by providing a wide range of alternative ways of achievement of the required function in a manner suitable for the viewpoint of each designer and then facilitates innovative design.

  • Many cities in the world have increased initiative to realize smart tourism. There are unexplored challenges for the people which lead and manage smart tourism projects and realize its value in tourism (we call them as 'Smart tourism initiatives'), such as orchestrating of tourism complexity, developing and sharing tourism strategy, sustaining tourism projects and innovation. Concerning these challenges, we aim to design a holistic capability maturity model for sustainable and smart tourism governance enabling sustainable tourism innovations via tackling the challenges above. We adopted Dynamic capability theory as a theoretical lens and introduced Design science research methodology in order to develop a new capability maturity governance model as a design artifact. As a result of the study, we could synthesize findings from iterations of the design research cycle based on the IT Capability Maturity Model. Our result proposes a potential capability maturity model supporting effective communication and strategic alignment for the initiatives with illuminating future paths with evaluation methods on tourism capabilities for the initiatives. Throughout this study, we contribute to the body of knowledge as well as practice by proposing a new tourism capability governance model.

  • Concurrent Engineering is a concept to aim at product development lead-time in order to satisfy customer's changing tastes in n timely manner. This approach is concurrently integrating all participants and aspects of product design, development and manufacture. In this paper the concepts, framework, and success factor-teamwork- of concurrent engineering is presented.

  • The increase of consumer needs for quality metal cutting related products with more precise tolerances and better product surface roughness has driven the metal cutting industry to continuously improve quality control of metal cutting processes. In this paper, two different approaches are discussed. First, design of experiments (DOE) is used to determine the significant factors and then fuzzy logic approach is presented for the prediction of surface roughness. The data used for the training and checking the fuzzy logic performance is derived from the experiments conducted on a CNC milling machine. In order to obtain better surface roughness, the proper sets of cutting parameters are determined before the process takes place. The factors considered for DOE in the experiment were the depth of cut, feed rate per tooth, cutting speed, tool nose radius, the use of cutting fluid and the three components of the cutting force. Finally the significant factors were used as input factors for fuzzy logic mechanism and surface roughness is predicted with empirical formula developed. Test results show good agreement between the actual process output and the predicted surface roughness.

  • The effect of $Al(OH)_3$ on physical, thermal, and retardant property of rubber was studied. It was analyzed by statistical experimental design method with one way array to confirm the effect of factors. Physical characteristics, thermal pyrolysis temperature, and combustion time were considered as the properties. The amount of $Al(OH)_3$ addition was chosen as significant parameter. As the result of ANOVA analysis, thermal pyrolysis temperature increased and combustion time decreased with increasing of $Al(OH)_3$.

  • The advent of very large scale integration(VLSI) has had a tremendous impact on the design of fault-tolerant circuits and systems. The increasing density, decreasing power consumption, and decreasing costs of integrated circuits, due in part to VLSI, have made it possible and practical to implement the redundancy approaches used in fault-tolerant computing. The purpose of this paper is to study the many aspects of designing fault-tolerant systems in a VLSI environment. First, we expound upon the opportunities and problems presented by VLSI technology. Second, we consider in detail the importance of design mistakes, common-mode failures, and transient faults in VLSI. Finally, we examine the techniques available to implement redundancy using VLSI and the promlems associated with these techniques.

  • We propose a method using QFD for design the hierarchical structure of AHP. This method provides definition for each area of House of Quality and design the hierarchical structure of the bottom-up QFD/AHP in which the upper hierarchy is designed through the classification of common characteristics with a focus on the lower hierarchy. Finally, we apply it to the development of an evaluation index for selecting heavy lifting service providers. This study has significance as the first instance of designing the archical structure of AHP after objectively verifying whether MECE condition, the basic requirement for AHP design, is satisfied.

  • This research investigates the status of environmental design implementation in Taiwan's industries (Certified by ISO 14001) by employing questionnaire survey. The correlation between the degree of environmental design implementation in Taiwan's industries and the relevant entrepreneurial characteristics are examined. Twenty-six environmental design principles in four phases: design, manufacturing, sales and transportation, and disposal are used to define and assess the current status of environmental design. The data analysis methods applied to this research includes descriptive statistics, T-test, Chi-square test, and single-factor analysis of variance (ANOVA). It is evident that 21 out of the 26 environmental design principles are frequently and consistently employed by the manufacturers in Taiwan. The results indicate that environmental design implementation is becoming mature in Taiwan's industries.
