  • It is well known that since abrupt faults in induction motors tend to lead to subsequent faults and deterioration of the drive apparatus, motor faults may lead to several operating restrictions, such as security problems and economic loss. A lot of research has been done in the area of diagnosis to detect machine faults and to prevent catastrophic hazards in the motor drive system. This paper presents a new method of motor current signature analysis in which the DC-link current of the inverter-driven induction motor system, where a single current sensor is employed instead of three AC current sensors, is measured, and fast Fourier transform analysis is performed. This proposed method makes it possible to easily discern and clearly separate the motor fault current signature from the normal operation current flowing through the stator and rotor windings.

  • This paper deals with the problem of detection of induction motor incipient faults. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approach is applied to detect two types of incipient faults (1). Interturn insulation and (2) Bearing wear faults in single-phase induction motor. The experimental data for five measurable parameters (motor intake current, rotor speed, winding temperature, bearing temperature and the noise) is generated in the laboratory on specially designed single-phase induction motor. Initially, the performance is tested with two inputs i.e. motor intake current and rotor speed, later the remaining three input parameters (winding temperature, bearing temperature and the noise) were added sequentially. Depending upon input parameters, the four ANN based fault detectors are developed. The training and testing results of these detectors are illustrated. It is found that the fault detection accuracy is improved with the addition of input parameters.

  • This paper proposes a new diagnosis algorithm to detect broken rotor bars (BRBs) faults in induction motors. The proposed algorithm is composed of a frequency signal dimension order (FSDO) estimator and a fault decision module. The FSDO estimator finds a number of fault-related frequencies in the stator current signature. In the fault decision module, the fault diagnostic index from the FSDO estimator is used depending on the load conditions of the induction motors. Experimental results obtained in a 75 kW three-phase squirrel-cage induction motor show that the proposed diagnosis algorithm is capable of detecting BRB faults with an accuracy that is superior to a zoom multiple signal classification (ZMUSIC) and a zoom estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (ZESPRIT).

  • Induction heating is a process with magnetic and thermal situation. Induction heating of flat metal products has an increasing importance in many applications, because it generates the heat within workpiece itself and provides high power densities and productivity. When the high frequency electric current flows in a coil, the process parameters which are air gap, power density, and heating time have a important roles on induction heating of steel plate. This study investigates an influence of the process parameters by means of experiments using Taguchi method.

  • This paper proposes the novel V/f control method to improve the stability of a V/f controlled induction motor drive system. The conventional V/f control method used in the proposed V/f control method is a vector-based method that is slightly different from the existing conventional V/f control method. The proposed control method uses a dynamic current compensator to improve the stability of a V/f controlled induction motor drive system. This proposed method is easy to implement and completely eliminates the motor oscillation phenomenon causing the instability of a V/f controlled induction motor drive system, especially when the system is driven near the resonant frequency in steady-state with light load. Additionally, this paper analyzes theoretically the instability of a V/f controlled induction motor drive system and shows the validity of the Proposed V/f control method through simulation and experimental results.

  • The paper presents a speed control system of vector controlled induct- ion motor using neural networks. The main feature of proposed speed control system is a Neural Network Controller(NNC) which supplies torque current to induction motor and Neural Network Emulator(NNE) which captures the forward dynamics of induction motor. A back propagation training algorithm is employed to train the NNE and NNC. In order to determine the NNC output error, plant(induction motor) output error can be back propagated through the NNE. The NNC and NNE for speed control of vector controlled induction motor is carried out by TMS320C30 DSP and IGBT current regulated PWM inverter. Through computer simulation and experimental results, it is verified that proposed speed control system is robust to the load variation. (author). refs., figs.

  • In this study, a new method has been presented for the detection of broken rotor bar (BRB) faults in inverter driven induction motors controlled via Field Oriented Control (FOC). To this end, a FOC controlled induction motor with a BRB fault was modeled using the Matlab/Simulink program. Experiments were carried out using the prepared simulation model at various loads and operating speeds. The motor current and speeds were monitored for healthy, 1, 2 and 3 BRB faults. The Resampling Based Order Tracking Analysis (RB-OTA) method was applied to the monitored signals. The obtained results were compared by using the classic Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method. When the obtained results were analyzed via the FFT method no information regarding any faults was determined in the run up or run down regions of the motor and the presented method gave very good results. The reliability of the proposed method was validated with experimental results. The main innovative part of this study is that the RB-OTA method was implemented on the induction motor current signal for detecting BRB faults.

  • An AC induction motor or constant speed characteristics has been widely used as power source because of simple structure and low maintenance cost in industrial field. The variable frequency AC source with a conventional inverter which is composed or power semi-conductors and drive systems contains much noises in sine wave current due to high speed switching or direct current. In this paper, the low pass LC filter for a variable speed induction motor driven by a full bridge inverter is introduced to solve EMI problem originated by much noise current. The modified LC filter based on the 3rd order Butterworth LC filter is used for the computer simulations and real experiments. The characteristics or proposed LC filter are investigated through FET analysis.
