  • A fuel pump for a turbopump system has been designed under an international co-work program. The liquid methane fuel pump has an inducer, in front of centrifugal impeller blades, to improve cavitation performance. The three dimensional viscous flow in the fuel pump was investigated through numerical computation. An arrangement of the inducer and impeller has yielded a strong interaction between inducer and impeller blades. The performance of the pump was evaluated from the calculated results. A parametric study was performed for various design variables, and it could oner a database for design parameters to design a fuel pump. A modified design of a fuel pump was proposed by KIMM to improve pump performance.

  • In the present study, flow simulations of a solution pump fer an absorption chiller are performed. The results are compared to the experimental data. Since the cavitation is more likely to occur in a solution pump due to Its operation under vacuum condition, and the cavitation was not considered in the present computations, the computed and experimental results show large discrepancies. For more accurate performance prediction of a solution pump, a cavitation model is required in the flow simulation. Flows through an inducer are also studied to see the effect of design parameters on performance characteristics. It is shown from the results that, if not properly designed, recirculation legion may exist near the hub region of the Inducer, and the suction surface may experience higher pressure than the pressure surface of the inducer, which may deteriorate the performance.

  • The present study focuses on the flow analysis of a turbo pump inducer by performing both numerical and experimental methods. The head rise, efficiency and detailed flow fields such as outlet flow angles, pressure and velocity vectors are measured and compared with the computational data. Generally a good agreement is obtained between numerical and experimental results. However, some discrepancies are observed due to complex flow structures inside the inducer. Future calculations with an advanced turbulence model and a dense computational grid needs to be performed to obtain accurate numerical solution for the detailed flow fields.

  • We studied the production and excretion of alpha-interferon in recombinant Escherichia coli harboring plasmid pIF-III-B, which carries alpha-interferon gene under the control of lipoprotein and lacUV5 promoter, and lac operator. Basically, the effects of concentrations of ampicillin and an inducer, IPTG, for the expression of the cloned gene, on the productions of alpha-interferon and plasmid stability were studied. The highest production of alpha-interferon was observed at 50 mg/1 of ampicillin concentration and 0.5 mM of IPTG. The plasmid pIF-III-B was maintained very stably in medium with ampicillin but segregated rapidly in medium without ampicillin. Also, the plasmid was segregated more rapidly in medium with an inducer higher than 0.5 mM.

  • Hydraulic performance and cavitation characteristics of fuel pump in turbopump were studied experimentally. This fuel pump has a centrifugal impeller with a separate inducer. In this paper, static pressure distribution of inducer was examined in non-cavitation and cavitation conditions. As cavitation came, the rising curve of static pressure in front of inducer was lightened because blade lodging did. In result, this offered the mechanism that recirculation zone could be small in case that recirculation was generated in low flow rate.

  • Neurospora crassa (KCTC 6079) produces tyrosinase (EC 1.14.18.1) during sexual differentiation under derepressed conditions in the presence of inducers such as amino acid analogues, antimetabolites or protein synthesis inhibitors. The selection of inducer concentration and induction time as well as inducer type are critical for the optimization of the enzyme production. The best inducer was found to be cycloheximide. Since cycloheximide was toxic to the cells, an optimal inducer concentration and an optimal induction time were determined to maximize the enzyme production from batch cultures. Mathematical models for the cell growth and the enzyme production were proposed and used for process optimization. By optimizing the induction conditions, maximum tyrosinase productivity was increased significantly.

  • This paper deals with numerical computations of cryogenic flows around turbopump inducer. Firstly, we introduce numerical methods to compute compressible/incompressible cryogenic two-phase flow. As a validation problem, computation results of 2 dimensional/axi-symmetric cryogenic flow will be presented. In this process, various cavitation model will be compared. Finally, numerical simulation of 3 dimensional turbopump inducer will be presented.

  • In the present paper, computational studies on the hydrodynamic behavior of the inducer for the rocket-engine turbopump are presented including the effect of the mass flow rate. As the mass flow rate is increased, the inducer showed better performance with weak back flows which may have deleterious effects upon the anti-cavitation ability. But the adopted inducer showed low head rise with high volume flow rates, which may be caused by the small passage area near the trailing edge. The static pressure distributions at the shroud surface are compared with experimental results showing very good agreements except near the leading edge where strong back flows are present. The overall performance of the inducer such as, efficiency, head rise is also compared with experiments. The computational results are generally in good agreements with experimental ones near the design point, but two results show discrepancy at the high flow rate.

  • Deletions between UASG and the GALI TATA box reduced glucose repression and allowed constitutive expression of the gene product in the absence of galactose. The relative inducer level (ratio of galactose/glucose concentrations) affected the extent of gene expression and glucose repression. Glucose repression was reduced by a factor of 2 to 5 as the relative inducer level increased. In the medium containing galactose only, induction of ${\beta}$-galactosidase synthesis by galactose increased with plasmid copy number. On the contrary, plasmid copy number did not affect significantly ${\beta}$-galactosidase synthesis in the medium containing both glucose and galactose (2% glucose+2% galactose), which might be due to glucose repression caused by high glucose concentration. However, when the medium contained the relatively high inducer level (0.4% glucose+0.8% galactose), ${\beta}$-galactosidase synthesis increased with plasmid copy number, indicating that the beneficial effect of higher galactose concentration was weaker than the repressive effect of higher glucose concentration.
