Non-equilibrium Monte Carlo Simulations for Critical Flux of Hard Sphere Suspensions in Crossflow Filtration

  • Non-equilibrium (irreversible) themodynamics is used to investigate colloidal back-diffusion during crossflow membrane filtration. The chemical potential is generalized as a superposition of equilibrium and irreversible contributions, originating from Brownian and shear-induced diffusion, respectively. As a result, an effective drag force is derived using the irreversible thermodynamics for a particle undergoing both Brownian and shear-induced diffusion in a sheared concentrated suspension. Using the drag force, a hydrodynamic force bias Monte Carlo method is developed for crossflow membrane filtration to determine the critical flux of hard sphere suspensions. Effects of shear rate and particle size on the critical flux are studied, and results show a good agreement with experimental observations reported in the literature.

연안역의 육상 교량에 작용하는 고립파에 의한 지진해일파력의 평가법 (Evaluating Method of Solitary Wave-Induced Tsunami Force Acting on an Onshore Bridge in Coastal Area)

  • 본 연구에서는 Navier-Stokes solver에 기초한 TWOPM-3D와 자유수면을 효과적으로 추적할 수 있는 VOF법을 결합한 수치해석법으로 연안역의 육상 교량에 작용하는 고립파에 의한 지진해일파력을 수치적으로 검토하였으며, 연직벽체와 연직주상구조물에 작용하는 단파파력에 관한 기존의 실험치와 비교 검토하여 본 수치해석의 타당성을 검증하였다. 실제로 피해를 입은 교량에 대해 지진해일파고의 변화에 따른 파력의 특성을 수치실험을 통하여 조사하였으며, 육상 교량에 작용하는 지진해일파력의 추정에 항력 성분만을 고려한 Morison식으로부터 얻어진 항력계수의 결과와 설계기준과의 비교로부터 본 3차원 수치해석의 유용성을 논의하였다. 또한, 지진해일파력을 보다 고정도로 추정할 수 있는 합리적인 방법으로 항력과 관성력을 동시에 고려한 Morison식의 적용을 제안하였다.

Streamlined Shape of Endothelial Cells

  • Flow induced shape change is important for spatial interpretation of vascular response and for understanding of mechanotransduction in a single cell. We investigated the possible shapes of endothelial cell (EC) in a mathematical model and compared these with experimental results. The linearized analytic solution from the sinusoidal wavy wall and Stokes flow was applied with the constraint of EC volume. The three dimensional structure of the human umbilical vein endothelial cell was visualized in static culture or after various durations of shear stress (20 $dyne/cm^2$ for 5, 10, 20, 40, 60, 120min). The shape ratio (width: length: height) of model agreed with that of the experimental result, which represented the drag force minimizing shape of stream-lining. EC would be streamlined in order to accommodate to the shear flow environmented by active reconstruction of cytoskeletons and membranes through a drag force the sensing mechanism.

자동차 냉각장치를 통하는 유동에 의한 항력 변화 예측 (Prediction of drag increase due to flow through automobile's cooling system)

  • Using a commercial flow-analysis code VSAERO, a method to predict the drag of an automobile induced by the intake air of the cooling system has been devised. Given the pressure loss coefficient across the radiator, which varies with the radiator shape and the local Re, a simplified model of the internal flow is coupled with VSAERO to find the mass-flow rate through the car. The flow rate is obtained iteratively and that, in turn, gives the drag associated with this flow, which essentially is the momentum carried by the drained air. The results of a few sample cases are presented for two front-end shapes in combination with varying radiator frontal area.

단일 원관에서 전방류의 주기적인 속도 변동에 따른 유동 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on Flow Characteristic due to the Periodic Velocity Fluctuation of Upstream at Single Tube)

  • 열교환기에서 유동 유발 진동은 배관의 파손을 유발할 수 있어서 열교환기의 구조 안정성을 위해 유동 유발 진동 특성을 규명할 필요가 있다. 본 연구는 단일 원관에서 입구의 유속이 일정한 경우와 주기적인 변동이 있는 경우에 대하여 시간에 따라 원관 주위에서 와류의 생성, 발달 및 분리 특성을 비교 분석하고 양력과 항력의 시간 변화 특성과 PSD 특성을 살펴보아 단일 원관에서 전방류의 주기적인 속도 변동에 따른 유동 특성을 규명하였다. 일정 입구 유속의 경우는 잘 알려진 칼만 와류 분포를 보여 주었으며 원관의 상하에서 교대로 와류가 발생, 성장, 분리하는 것을 관찰할 수 있었다. 주기적인 입구 유속의 경우는 원관의 상하에서 동시에 와류가 발생하는 것을 관찰할 수 있었다. 일정 입구 유속의 경우는 양력의 PSD 크기가 항력에 비해 약 500배 컸으며 주파수는 31.15 Hz이며 항력은 2배인 62.3 Hz로 나타났다. 주기적인 입구 유속의 경우는 항력의 PSD가 양력보다 약 500배 컸으며 주파수는 입구 유속의 주파수와 동일하게 15.57 Hz이며 양력의 주파수는 일정 입구 유속과 같은 칼만 와류 주파수인 31.15 Hz로 나타났다.

  • A numerical method to investigate the non-linear motion characteristics of a TLP is established. A time domain simulation that includes the memory effect using the convolution integral is used to consider the transient effect of TLP motion. The hydrodynamic coefficients and wave force are calculated using a potential flow model based on the HOBEM(higher order boundary element method). The viscous drag force acting on the platform and tendons is also considered by using Morison’s drag. The results of the present numerical method are compared with experimental data. The focus is the nonlinear effect due to the viscous drag force on the TLP motion. The ringing, springing, and drift motion are due to the drag force based on Morison's formula.

압전세라믹 액추에이터를 이용한 익형 후류 제어 (Control of Flow Around an Airfoil Using Piezo-Ceramic Actuators)

  • The objective of this study is to increase lift and decrease drag of an airfoil at high angles of attack by delaying flow separation with piezo-ceramic actuators. The airfoil used is NACA 0012 and its chord length is 0.3m. An experiment is performed at the freestream velocity of 15m/s at which the Reynolds number based on the chord length is $2{\times}10^5$. Seven rectangular actuators are attached to the airfoil surface and move up and down based on the electric signal. Drag and lift are measured using an in-house two-dimensional force-balance and the surface pressures are also measured. At the attack angle of $16^{\circ}$, the separation point is delayed downstream due to momentum addition induced by the movement of the actuators. Lift is increased by 10%, drag is reduced by 37%, and the efficiency is increased up to 170%. The flow fields with and without control are visualized using the smoke-wire and tuft techniques.

Endplate effect on aerodynamic characteristics of three-dimensional wings in close free surface proximity

  • We investigated the aerodynamic characteristics of a three-dimensional (3D) wing with an endplate in the vicinity of the free surface by solving incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with the turbulence closure model. The endplate causes a blockage effect on the flow, and an additional viscous effect especially near the endplate. These combined effects of the endplate significantly reduce the magnitudes of the velocities under the lower surface of the wing, thereby enhancing aerodynamic performance in terms of the force coefficients. The maximum lift-to-drag ratio of a wing with an endplate is increased 46% compared to that of wing without an endplate at the lowest clearance. The tip vortex of a wing-with-endplate (WWE) moved laterally to a greater extent than that of a wing-without-endplate (WOE). This causes a decrease in the induced drag, resulting in a reduction in the total drag.

  • The aerodynamic characteristics of a circular cylinder with a wavy splitter plate were experimentally studied, specifically the potential reduction of drag and fluctuations in drag. To study the individual effects of amplitude and wavelength, the experiments were conducted by varying one parameter at a time while holding the other one constant. To study the effect of amplitude (A), the wavelength to diameter ratio (λ/D) was fixed at 0.115 and the amplitude to diameter ratio (A/D) was varied as 0.005, 0.010, 0.015 and 0.020. Similarly, to study the effect of wavelength, A/D was fixed as 0.020 and λ/D was varied as 0.46, 0.23, 0.15 and 0.12. Analysis of the data indicated that the wavy splitter plate caused a significant reduction in both the magnitude and the fluctuation of drag. The variation of aerodynamic forces and the fluctuations with them corresponding to different Reynolds numbers were computed and the spectral aspects of fluctuating forces due to vortex shedding is analysed and effective reduction in both shedding frequency and magnitude was observed.

반복 레이저 펄스를 이용한 초음속 비행체의 항력저감 (Wave Drag Reduction due to Repetitive Laser Pulses)

  • 본 연구에서는 초음속 비행체의 조파저항을 감소시키기 위하여, 최대 주파수 80 kHz의 반복 레이저 펄스에 의해 야기된 에너지 부가법에 관한 실험적 연구가 수행된다. 기류 마하수 1.94의 흡입식 초음속 풍동의 바깥에 설치된 초점렌즈에 의하여 레이저 펄스가 실린더 모델 전단부에 집약된다. 시간변동 항력과 정체압력은 로드셀과 PCB 압력센서에 의해서 측정되며, 동시에 고속 카메라를 이용하여 가시화가 수행된다. 본 연구의 결과로부터, 레이저 펄스 에너지 부가에 의한 항력 저감량은 레이저 펄스 주파수가 증가할 때, 최대 21%까지 거의 선형적으로 증가하였다. 부가 에너지 효율은 레이저 펄스 에너지에만 의존하는 결과를 얻었으며, 최대 1000%까지 달성되었다.
